H.D. Smith continues to grow

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2013

H.D. Smiths Springfield work force is up to 286, nearly 50 percent more than in the fall of 2009. Companywide employment of 879 is up 16.1 percent. Its a combination of factors, said president and chief operating officer Chris Smith. Economic recovery has helped, he said. The company, with annual revenues of $3.5 billion, is the fourth-largest pharmaceutical wholesaler in the nation and the largest that is privately owned. There also have been a series of acquisitions, including two in the last three months. But Smith said much of the local employment growth results from Internet technology hires related to a companywide system upgrade, including new warehouse, document management and invoice systems. The Opus project was begun more than two years ago and is scheduled for completion in 2013. Were going through a major systems change, said Smith, whose brother, Dale Jr., is chairman and CEO. Dale Sr., who founded H.D. Smith as a one-building, one-vehicle operation in 1954, still comes to work regularly. In addition to the corporate headquarters in Park South, H.D. Smith leases office space on the west side. Go here to see the original: H.D. Smith continues to grow … Continue reading

This Man Fought Through Hell To Avoid Becoming Another Homeless Veteran

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2013

When Dennis Cadigan returned from Vietnam, a Marine machine gunner blinded by an enemy booby trap and addicted to his pain medication, he almost became just another veteran statistic. His dependency on pain medication quickly led to a full blown heroin addiction and Cadigan was on a dark path. It isn't hard to imagine him becoming one of the 300,000 veterans who live on the streets or in a shelter on any given night in the U.S. Or one of the thousands of veterans who continue to suffer from drug addiction and substance abuse. But Cadigan was lucky and determined. He had friends and family who helped him clean up, and a drive that enabled him to succeed. He eventually createdPhoenix Woodworks, a company he hopes to build and share ownership in with other disabled veterans. For many veterans, however, increasingly those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, the story can end very differently. From 2002 to 2005 prescription drug abuse doubled among U.S. military personnel and then tripled between 2005 and 2008. And the rates of abuse are higher among military than civilian populations, 11% and 5% respectively. Drug addiction is only one challenge veterans face. One in seven homeless … Continue reading

Trustee drug testing welfare seekers

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2013

MOUNT VERNON, Ind. MOUNT VERNON If you need emergency money in Black Township, you must be drug free. In a bold move this month, Black Township in Posey County became the first Indiana Township to drug test all applicants for emergency township assistance. The immediate goal is to keep taxpayers from funding drug use, said Black Township Trustee Lindsay Suits. "Our long term goal is to break the cycle of dependency," Suits said. "It is time for us to stop having great ideas and stopping there." Indiana Townships assistance programs provide residents with the basic essentials for life when all else fails food, clothing, housing, water, electricity. Usually this means paying past-due Vectren or water bills, Suits said. The purpose for township assistance is to help people through emergencies so they can become self sufficient, Suits said. People using drugs won't find work and most employers drug test all potential hires, she said. The push to begin drug testing came first from Black Township's three-person elected board. Suits held off for the first two years in office, then took the plung this year. In the three weeks since Suits began drug testing, the Township has run more than 35 tests. … Continue reading

New target for rheumatoid arthritis drugs

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2013

Jan. 25, 2013 Researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery have identified a potential new target for drugs to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a protein known as IRHOM2. The finding could provide an effective and potentially less toxic alternative therapy to tumor necrosis factor-alpha blockers (TNF-blockers), the mainstay of treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, and could help patients who do not respond to this treatment. Efforts to develop drugs that hone in on this new target are underway. "This study is an elegant example of the capacity of basic science cell biologists to work with translational rheumatologists to address a clinically relevant question at a basic level," said Jane Salmon, M.D., Collette Kean Research Chair and co-director, Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Research at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, and an author of the study. "We have identified a clinically relevant target that can be applied to patients in the near term." The study will appear online, ahead of print, on January 25, in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and in the February 2013 print issue. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease, is triggered, in large part, by TNF-alpha, a small signaling protein usually involved in launching … Continue reading

Drugs in the workplace carry high costs for employers

Posted: Published on January 27th, 2013

Substance abuse problems among Ohio workers can result in workplace injuries, higher medical costs for their employers, more absenteeism and reduced productivity, according to survey data and experts. Employers pay on average $7,000 per employee annually to deal with unaddressed substance abuse problems among workers, according to some estimates. In the hopes of avoiding these and other troubles, many employers in Ohio screen job candidates for drugs and alcohol, and some randomly or routinely test their employees for intoxicating substances. Employers that drug test job applicants and current workers are less likely to have drug users on their payrolls, experts said. Companies across the region and Ohio that conduct drug tests have seen a decline in results that come back positive for drugs. But some experts warn that drug testing is not always effective to identify substance abuse, and simply taking punitive action against people who test positive can be counterproductive. Employers can say to applicants, I am going to give you a chance to come and work for me, but I am also going to be doing random drug testing, and if you come back with dirty urine, then Ill either refer you or terminate you, said Helen Jones-Kelley, … Continue reading

Inspirational Business Speaker Author Armed with vision, a mission to inspire and a powerful story, Jonathan has already taught more than 500000 people the life-changing principles of how to Make Your Own Magic. Growing up in an environment that was a prescription for failure, young John John -- his grandmother`s affectionate nickname for him -- faced many hardships. Although love generously bestowed by his parents and grandmother was a constant factor in his early years, Jonathan`s childhood was extremely difficult. After exposing him to drugs and violence, his mother was removed from the household by the Department of Social Services when he was seven years old. Two years later Jonathan`s father left to start a new family on another side of town. The grandmother that took over his upbringing died suddenly when he was 14. Now homeless, Jonathan was forced to take up residence in his aunt`s basement. To afford the $50.00 a month in rent and his portion of the electric bill, he worked a full-time job as a dishwasher/bus boy at Chili`s Grill and Bar in the evenings and on weekends. He became a father at 15, graduated from … Continue reading
