Notre Dame study explores the potential benefits and threats of nanotechnology research

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

Public release date: 25-Jan-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Kathleen Eggleson keggleso@nd.edu 574-631-1229 University of Notre Dame Every day scientists learn more about how the world works at the smallest scales. While this knowledge has the potential to help others, it's possible that the same discoveries can also be used in ways that cause widespread harm. A new article in the journal Nanomedicine, born out of a Federal Bureau of Investigation workshop held at the University of Notre Dame in September 2012, tackles this complex "dual-use" aspect of nanotechnology research. "The rapid pace of breakthroughs in nanotechnology, biotechnology, and other fields, holds the promise of great improvements in areas such as medical diagnosis and treatment" says Kathleen Eggleson, a research scientist in Notre Dame's Center for Nano Science and Technology and the author of the study. "But the risk of misuse of these breakthroughs rises along with the potential benefit. This is the essence of the 'dual-use dilemma.'" The report examines the potential for nano-sized particles (which are measured in billionths of a meter) to breach the blood-brain barrier, the tightly knit layers of cells that afford the brain the highest level of protectionfrom microorganisms, harmful molecules, etc.in … Continue reading

Tumor Cells Engineer Acidity to Drive Cell Invasion

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

Newswise Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at Wayne State University School of Medicine investigated the acidity in solid tumors to determine if pH levels play a role in cancer cell invasion in surrounding tissues. They found that an acidic microenvironment can drive cancer cells to spread and propose that neutralizing pH would inhibit further invasion, providing a therapeutic opportunity to slow the progression of cancers. Their study appeared in the Jan. 3 online release of Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research. According to the studys corresponding author, Robert J. Gillies, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Cancer Imaging & Metabolism at Moffitt, acidity in solid tumors is the result of an increased fermentative metabolism combined with poor delivery of blood to tissues. In this study, tumor invasion and pH were monitored in immunodeficient laboratory mice hosting a variety of tumors. We monitored the test animals over time using microscopy and found that the highest regions of tumor invasion corresponded to areas with the lowest pH, Gillies explained. Tumor invasion did not occur in regions with normal or near normal pH levels. Furthermore, when we neutralized the acidity with oral sodium bicarbonate, the invasion … Continue reading

Online vs. Office: Michigan residents get prescriptions via online medical service

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

We are in the middle of cold and flu season and while many will pick up the phone to schedule a doctor's appointment, people in Michigan now have the option of just going online. A Minnesota-based company is now offering a 24/7 online medical service to people in Michigan. Sharon Garner is in and out of the doctor's office all the time. "10 months into remission," says Garner who survived 3rd stage colon cancer, "but I still have to see an oncologist quite regularly." So, the last thing Garner wants to do is sit in the waiting room for hours when all she has is a cold. "And then you are taking your chances on getting sicker than what you really would be anyway," she says. Garner likes the idea of clicking on a website to get a diagnosis and prescription. And now, she can. People living in Michigan now have access to Virtuwell.com. It is a 24/7 online clinic that treats common conditions like bladder infections and sinus infections. "We ask the same questions that you would expect from a doctor's office, but we do it online," says Kevin Palattao, the Vice President of Patient Care Systems and http://www.Virtuwell.com. … Continue reading

An Oregon Democrat's doomed plan to require prescriptions for cigarettes

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013

MitchGreenlickwants to put cigarettes in the same category as LSD and steroids It's hard to argue that cigarettes are good for you. But should getting your hands on a cancer stick really land you behind bars? That's the apparent dream of Oregon Rep. Mitch Greenlick, whose latest proposed bill would make cigarettes a Schedule III controlled substance (like LSD and steroids), meaning that it would be illegal to possess or distribute them without a doctor's prescription. Those who get caught under this proposal would suffer a fine of $6,250 and/or up to a year in prison. Sure, the law may sound extreme especially coming from a state that nearly legalized recreational marijuana a few months ago but don't start hoarding your smokes just yet. Even Rep. Greenlick is admittedly skeptical about the bill's future. It's almost certain to go down in flames at the hands of tobacco lobbyists. The bill is more likely a symbolic act: Greenlickhopes that the inevitable death of his bill will at least bolster the possibility of passing a less-extreme anti-smoking bill, which would seek to tax cigarettes. And that's probably for the best, saysEllis E. Conklin atSeattleWeekly. After all, what kind of doctor is going to say, … Continue reading
