Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

A survey by RxRights.org recently found that despite the pharmaceutical industry's insistence that people import prescription drugs to avoid the need for a prescription that in fact 92.8% of Americans surveyed imported prescription drugs with a prescription because it was more cost effective to do so. Winnipeg, Manitoba (PRWEB) January 22, 2013 The high cost of medications and insurance coverage gaps are a common problem throughout the U.S. with low income families, students and the retired often hit the hardest. In an effort to better understand those affected, RxRights have also been collecting the real life stories of those throughout the U.S. who are struggling to afford the high price of medication. Once such story is that of Ronnie in Texas: "I have severe COPD, but have to wait to get on Medicare for 2.5 years. My medicine is about $700 a month total in U.S. I cannot pay that. So, without being able to get meds online, there would not be much hope for me." ~Ronnie These accounts of U.S. citizens struggling with their medication costs were also reflected in the RxRights survey with 77.6% of respondents being between the ages 50-75, nearly half (47.5%) of respondents having annual … Continue reading

The DrugRisk Resource Center is the Webs largest source for information on prescription drug warnings, side effects and legal news. Visit http://www.DrugRisk.com New York, NY (PRWEB) January 22, 2013 DrugRisk seeks to improve patient safety through education, with the latest updates of drug studies, recalls, and litigation news. While prior data has linked Yaz to blood clots, this study is the first to specifically addresses women suffering migraines, explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer. The resource center recently added warnings from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists that birth control pills containing drospirenone, like Yaz and Yasmin, may cause higher risks of blood clots.* Frances Health Ministry has also said they will stop reimbursements for the drugs over similar concerns.** Nevertheless, there has still been no official Yaz recall by the manufacturer. Now, a new study on DrugRisk from Bringham and Womens Faulkner Hospital in Boston found that, while combined hormone contraceptives like Yaz and Yasmin may raise blood clot risks for all women, the risks are significantly higher for those suffering migraines.*** DrugRisk has learned that thousands of patients have filed Yaz lawsuits over blood clots, which have been consolidated to a special Multi-District Litigation court in Illinois. The … Continue reading

DrugRisk Update: Judge Orders Pradaxa Maker to Disclose Prior Lawsuit Info

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

New York, NY (PRWEB) January 22, 2013 The prescription drug resource center DrugRisk.com is alerting patients taking the blood thinner Pradaxa that new information has been added to the site showing the judge presiding over Pradaxa internal bleeding lawsuits has ordered the drug maker to disclose information on prior lawsuits. The goal of DrugRisk is to improve patient safety through education of the latest drug warnings, recalls, studies and litigation news. Many follow litigation to learn how others may be affected with similar problems and whether they have options, explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer. DrugRisk previously added a report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices showing anticoagulants like Pradaxa are among the highest risk outpatient drugs. Also, hemorrhage cases submitted to the FDA show bleeding from Pradaxa was nearly 5 times as likely to result in death than with warfarin.* The resource center has learned that, due to the number of Pradaxa lawsuits filed so far, cases are being consolidated in a special federal court in Illinois, formally known as MDL No. 2385, IN RE: Pradaxa Product Liability Litigation, Southern District of Illinois. Judge David Herndon, who is overseeing the litigation, recently reported that as many as 176 cases … Continue reading

Your Skin on Drugs — New Tool From RxISK.org

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

Free online tool to research and report prescription drug side effects on skin and nails Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) January 21, 2013 Crime TV fans know how easily drugs can be detected by skin and nail analysis, says Dr. Dee Mangin, Data Based Medicines Chief Medical Officer and McMaster Universitys David Braley Nancy Gordon Chair of Family Medicine. However, in real life we often dont make the connection between the prescription drugs we take and their effects on our bodies. Arsenic, the poison of choice for inheritance-minded spouses in the 19th century, was actually more commonly used in the cosmetic sense to lighten skin color and whiten eyes. Unfortunately, one could easily get the dosage wrong and pay the ultimate price for beauty. Today, skin-bleaching drugs are one of the biggest sellers in the world, and are linked to blood cancers such as leukemia and cancers of the liver and kidneys, as well as a severe skin condition called ochronosis, a form of hyper-pigmentation that causes the skin to turn a dark purple shade. Oral contraceptives are an even bigger seller. However, many of these are advertised and sold for their beneficial effects on skin rather than for contraception. They can … Continue reading

Wal-Mart's health care question

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

Folks at Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) can't seem to make up their minds about health care. Just last week, there was talk the company might offer health insurance coverage to small businesses, a group that has trouble buying coverage at reasonable rates. Sounds like the company might be thinking about organizing a health-care exchange targeting small businesses. Maybe not. A company spokeswoman told Bloomberg BusinessWeek the company was evaluating the idea. But, she added, "Wal-Mart does not currently have plans for a private health insurance exchange." Okay. Next, the Orlando Business Journal's Abraham Aboraya, who started all this speculation, quoted a Wal-Mart executive as saying it will open primary care clinics in five to seven years. But, no, maybe not. Later, the company told Aboraya that there was no big plan for primary care. So it's all very confusing. The larger trend is, however, that small-business health insurance exchanges are starting to get organized. It may be that a Wal-Mart or a Costco Wholesale (COST) may be involved, as opposed to exchanges set up by states, because they have the expertise on negotiating plans covering many thousands of people, particularly Costco. At the same time, big retail chains, like Wal-Mart, Costco … Continue reading

Indonesia sentences British woman to death for drugs

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2013

BALI, Indonesia An Indonesian court sentenced a British woman to death on Tuesday for smuggling cocaine worth $2.5 million into the resort island of Bali -- even though prosecutors had sought only a 15-year sentence. Lindsay June Sandiford, 56, wept when judges handed down the sentence and declined to speak to reporters on her way back to prison, covering her face with a scarf. She had previously claimed in court that she was forced into taking the drugs into the country by a gang that was threatening to hurt one of her children. There are about 40 foreigners on death row in Indonesia, which like many Asian countries is very strict on drug crimes. A verdict is expected in the trial of Sandiford's alleged accomplice, British man Julian Anthony Pounder, on Wednesday. He is accused of receiving the drugs in Bali, which has a busy bar and nightclub scene where party drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy are bought and sold between foreigners. In its verdict, a judge panel at the Denpasar District Court concluded that Sandiford had damaged the image of Bali as a tourism destination and weakened the government's drug prevention program. "We found no reason to lighten … Continue reading

Indonesia sentences UK woman to death over drugs

BALI, Indonesia (AP) An Indonesian court sentenced a British grandmother to death on Tuesday for smuggling cocaine worth $2.5 million in her suitcase onto the resort island of Bali even though prosecutors had sought only a 15-year sentence. Lindsay June Sandiford, 56, wept when judges handed down the sentence and declined to speak to reporters on her way back to prison, covering her face with a floral scarf. She had claimed in court that she was forced into taking the drugs into the country by a gang that was threatening to hurt her children. Indonesia, like many Asian countries, is very strict on drug crimes, and most of the more than 40 foreigners on its death row were convicted of drug charges. Sandiford's lawyer said she would appeal. Appeals take several years. Condemned criminals face a firing squad in Indonesia, which has not carried out an execution since 2008, when 10 people were put to death. A verdict is expected in the trial of Sandiford's alleged accomplice, British man Julian Anthony Pounder, on Wednesday. He is accused of receiving the drugs in Bali, which has a busy bar and nightclub scene where party drugs such as cocaine and ecstasy are … Continue reading
