Research on protein evolution contributes to biomedicine and biomass energy At Keio University, the Doi Lab researches how proteins, which possess many advanced functions, have evolved since the origin of life four billion years ago. In this way, the researchers are learning the principles of how proteins are built up. They also aim to apply this knowledge to create new proteins that contribute to healthcare, the environment, and energy. Q. Looking at the proteins in various organisms today, they have very advanced functions, and we don't really understand how such proteins arose. It seems that when an organism's environment changes, the organism knows it needs enzymes, and makes them right away, but we don't understand the mechanism behind that evolution. Of course, we can't actually observe past evolution, but if we change the conditions in such ways, and find we can create proteins similar to the advanced ones that exist today, then conversely, we may be able to artificially create proteins that didn't exist before, such as enzymes that can be used in bio-energy, or drugs that function as antibodies. Q: At 65 years old, Ive been active all my life. I stopped lifting weights 10 years ago because I was lifting plenty on my job in construction. I still work out several times a week, but I am plagued with man boobs! I feel like my pecs have become flabby, and it seems all the exercise Ive done through the years was for naught. I know some medicines can cause breast development in men, but the only thing I take is simvastatin for cholesterol. Can you help me correct this? A: Male breast enlargement goes by the medical term gynecomastia. Although many medications can cause this complication, it is not generally recognized as a side effect of statin-type cholesterol-lowering drugs. After some sleuthing, however, we found that statins such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), rosuvastatin (Crestor) and simvastatin (Zocor) have been linked to gynecomastia (European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, June 2012).
