St. Jude Medical Receives CE Mark of Next-Generation Cardiac Device for Stroke Prevention

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- St. Jude Medical, Inc. (STJ), a global medical device company, today announced European CE Mark approval of its AMPLATZER Amulet Left Atrial Appendage Occluder. The Amulet device is used to close the left atrial appendage (LAA) in patients diagnosed with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF). According to research, AF leads to an increased risk for stroke. Sealing off the LAA helps prevent the risk of blood clot formation and release, potentially reducing the risk of stroke. The next-generation percutaneous transcatheter device leverages the design and clinical success of the original AMPLATZER Cardiac Plug with additional features allowing treatment of a wider range of appendage anatomies. St. Jude Medical will be showcasing the new AMPLATZER Amulet device during the eighteenth annual Boston AF Symposium at booth 319. During AF, chaotic electrical signals in the hearts upper chambers (atria) beat erratically and out of sync with the two lower chambers, resulting in poor blood flow. The LAA is a tube-shaped appendage connected to the left atrium of the heart that can potentially hold static blood during an episode of AF, increasing the likelihood of clot formation. Research shows that in AF patients, approximately 90 percent of all cardiac blood … Continue reading

Stroke survivors with PTSD more likely to avoid treatment

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

Public release date: 18-Jan-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Elizabeth Streich estreich@columbia.edu 212-305-3689 Columbia University Medical Center New York, NY A new survey of stroke survivors has shown that those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are less likely to adhere to treatment regimens that reduce the risk of an additional stroke. Researchers found that 65 percent of stroke survivors with PTSD failed to adhere to treatment, compared with 33 percent of those without PTSD. The survey also suggests that nonadherence in PTSD patients is partly explained by increased ambivalence toward medication. Among stroke survivors with PTSD, approximately one in three (38 percent) had concerns about their medications. Results of the study, led by Columbia University Medical Center researchers, are published today in the British Journal of Health Psychology. According to data from the American Stroke Association, nearly 795,000 Americans each year suffer a new or recurrent stroke. Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death and the top cause of disability in the United States. Survivors of strokes are often prescribed treatment regiments, including antiplatelet agents, antihypertensive agents, and statins, which help reduce the risk of subsequent strokes. Previous research has shown that PTSD triggered by medical eventswhich affects … Continue reading

Exploring Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's, Alzheimer's Diseases

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

Newswise Daniel Duran rose at 3:30 a.m. one August morning to have electrodes stuck into his brain. Called deep-brain stimulation (DBS), the surgery changed his life. Instead of long, frozen "off" periods due to Parkinson's disease, Duran now enjoys hours at a time when he can move about. Could DBS help patients with Alzheimer's disease? While there are hints it might, the therapy requires delicate surgery and it does not work for all patients. Alzforum reporter Amber Dance visited the operating room to see how DBS works in practice, and to explore its potential as a treatment for Alzheimer's . Follow her story here. About Alzforum: The Alzheimer Research Forum (www.alzforum.org), founded in 1996, is the web's most dynamic scientific community dedicated to understanding Alzheimer disease and related disorders. Access to the web site is free to all. The Forums editorial priorities are as diverse as the needs of the research community. The web site reports on the latest scientific findings, from basic research to clinical trials; creates and maintains public databases of essential research data and reagents; and produces discussion forums to promote debate, speed the dissemination of new ideas, and break down barriers across the numerous disciplines that … Continue reading

Sight and insight

Sight and insight Reverend Sharon McRann, High Prairie United Church for South Peace News A woman named Julie with cerebral palsy asked her pastor, Why did Jesus heal people then, but does not heal people now? Is it because Im bad? Its definitely not because shes bad, but it is a difficult question to answer, because it is valid. We speak of Jesus healing people, and yet Julie still lives in a wheelchair. She is a church attender and a woman of strong faith. Whats wrong? Even if we believe in healing miracles today, the truth is theyre not for everyone, regardless of the amount of faith. The question, for many of us, goes unanswered. Bartimaeus cries out to Jesus that he wants his sight back. We dont know any of the particulars as to why hes blind, or how long hes been blind, but he makes his request. He is told that his faith has made him well; and immediately he can see. Simple explanations include the suggestion that the blindness is a temporary condition. Maybe Bartimaeus simply doesnt realize that washing his eyes, or applying a simple herbal treatment, might open them. On the other hand, the story … Continue reading

Heads Up Alaska: Common Causes of Traumatic Brain Injury

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

ANCHORAGE - Around 800 Alaskans suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) every year, according to the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services. DHSS says the highest rates of TBI are among Alaska Natives, residents of rural Alaska and young people ages 15 to 19 in motor vehicle crashes. The number one cause of TBI across the country and in Alaska is falls. "And that can be a high level fall or a ground level fall, said trauma surgeon Dr. Regina Chennault. Especially in Alaska, icy conditions can catch many people off guard, but its not just the outdoors where people are falling. Dr. Chennault had a patient who woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. And he fell and hit underneath his chin on the dresser and that caused a fracture in his and he also had a traumatic brain injury from that fall, said Chennault. It's older Alaskans who are especially vulnerable to taking what could be a dangerous or even fatal step. The second most common cause of TBI is in a motor vehicle crash. One Alaskan who knows all about that is Jeffry Kellerman. See the rest here: Heads Up Alaska: … Continue reading

ELN/BIIB Seek Label Expansion

Posted: Published on January 18th, 2013

Biogen Idec Inc. (BIIB) and partner Elan Corporation (ELN) recently submitted applications to the US Food and Drug Administration (:FDA) and European Medicines Agency (:EMA) seeking to update the label of their multiple sclerosis (MS) drugTysabri (natalizumab). The companies are looking to get Tysabri approved as a first line treatment for patients suffering from certain relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) who have tested negative for antibodies to the JC virus (:JCV). The application is based on risk stratification data. Tysabri slows disability progression by 42% 54% and reduces annualized relapse rates by 68%. Tysabri is the primary growth driver at Elan. As per Elan, Tysabri global net sales in the third quarter of 2012 rose 9.8% to $306.4 million. However, third quarter 2012 Tysabri revenues at Biogen declined 1% to $275 million. We note that Tysabri is approved in the US for treating relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS) in patients who show inadequate response to or are unable to tolerate other treatments. In the EU, Tysabri is approved for treating highly active relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) in adults who have severe RRMS or have not responded to beta interferon treatment. In the EU, Tysabri was approved in 2006 and … Continue reading
