Study of Breast Cancer Message Boards Finds Frequent Discussion of Drug Side Effects, Discontinuation of Therapy

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2013

First Study of Online Conversation about Drug Side Effects Reveals Opportunity to Analyze Social Media to Capture Patient Perceptions of Therapies, Barriers to Adherence Newswise PHILADELPHIA -- In the first study to examine discussion of drug side effects on Internet message boards, researchers from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that breast cancer survivors taking the commonly prescribed adjuvant therapy known as aromatase inhibitors (AIs) often detailed in these forums troublesome symptoms resulting from the drugs, and they were apt to report discontinuing the treatment or switching to a different drug in the same class. The findings are published online this week in the journal Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety. With 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States today the largest group of cancer survivors researchers say the findings have broad implications for physician communication with patients about these issues to help to promote proper adherence and inform patient-to-patient discussion online. Both the availability and anonymity provided by message boards and increasingly, other forms of social media such as Twitter and Facebook offer patients a place to voice concerns and connect with an audience of peers in similar situations. This type of social … Continue reading

A shot in the dark? Some say flu vaccine hard to find

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2013

Some parts of the country are experiencing spot shortages of flu vaccine because of increased demand in a flu season that started earlier and is more severe than previous years. In Las Vegas, Celeste Tom tried six times before she found a flu shot for her boyfriend. "I'd been bugging him to get a flu shot, but he kept putting it off," said Tom, 55. The Smith's Food and Drug Center where she got her shot was out. Her partner called his doctor's office, but they were out, too. Next she tried a Walgreens and then a CVS pharmacy; no vaccine. She called another Smith's, but it would administer vaccine only to people over 65. On Monday, she found a Walgreens that had 10 doses left. "I called back when he got off work at 1 p.m. to make sure they still had some, and he finally went in." "The bottom line is there's vaccine out there," said Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "There may be places where there are spot shortages, but there should be a little bit more coming, so people may have to check around for it." It took Pam … Continue reading

Mother gets half-year for locking 3 kids in car’s trunk

Published: Thursday, January 17, 2013, 12:01 a.m. Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wynne on Wednesday called what Anna Boyle did in September the "epitome of bad parenting" and then sentenced her to six months in the county jail. Before he handed down the sentence, Wynne read to Boyle the conditions of the court order that prohibits her from seeing or contacting her children. The order is valid until 2017. After Boyle was arrested, her children, ages 5, 7 and 8, were removed and placed with relatives. Boyle, 28, could earn the chance to see her children sooner if she meets the requirements established by the dependency court. She also could eventually regain custody of her children. Boyle likely will need to undergo drug treatment, parenting classes and mental health counseling. Boyle pleaded guilty last month to drug possession and unlawful imprisonment in connection with the Sept. 23 traffic stop. She faced a maximum of eight months in jail. Prosecutors agreed to recommend a mid-range sentence because of Boyle's lack of criminal history and her willingness to plead guilty. Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Jarett Goodkin said that the standard range sentence didn't necessarily reflect the seriousness of the crime. "Ms. … Continue reading

'Every Thug' Arrested in Prostitution Crackdown – Video

#39;Every Thug' Arrested in Prostitution Crackdown "Some are married. Some had drugs on them. Some were porn stars. One was a police academy trainee. Another is a microbiologist. The 78 people arrested by Florida deputies between Jan. 10 and 13 all have one thing in common: they're all suspects in a massive prostitution investigation. Undercover deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office spent just four days arresting the suspects, targeted through websites used to solicit prostitution, according to a press release."* Since all other crimes have apparently been solved, the Polk County Sheriff has cracked down on prostitution, getting "every thug" in the county behind bars. Thank goodness those dangerous IT specialists, microbiologists, and city employees are off the streets. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss how prostitution could ever be considered a high priority than say, murder or theft. *Read more from Andy Campbell/ Huffington Post: http://www.huffingtonpost.com By: TheYoungTurks … Continue reading

Study: Hundreds of rare disease drugs in testing

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) -- For the nearly 30 million Americans who suffer from a rare disease, there's heartening news: Drugmakers have been shifting much of their research away from pills for the millions to uncommon disorders that often kill prematurely because there are few or no treatment options. Pharmaceutical and biotech companies are running patient tests of more than 5,400 potential new medicines, including many being tested for multiple conditions. Nearly 1,800 research projects are for rare diseases, and hundreds more are for disorders for which there's been no new medicine in a decade or more. That's according to a study to be released Thursday, sponsored by the trade group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, known as PhRMA. The study also found that thousands of those experimental drugs could be the first in a new medicine class with a unique target or effect, including 45 percent of 1,100 drugs that made it to the final patient testing stage. At least 577 use new technologies, from gene therapy to cloned antibodies, to precisely target the disease site and limit side effects elsewhere. And at least 155 are part of a long-awaited vanguard of personalized medicine, in which gene variations or other … Continue reading
