Madera Pharmacy Owner Shoots and Kills Suspect! Occurred 1/8/13 MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The Madera Police Department is investigating a shooting at the Almond Avenue Pharmacy that happened Tuesday night. Investigators were called to the pharmacy around 6:30 pm for an attempted robbery and when they got there they discovered there had also been a shooting. Police say that two suspects entered the pharmacy from the back door. Investigators say at least one of the suspects started shooting. The owner of the pharmacy and his mother were inside the business at the time. The owner's mother was shot in the leg. She was taken to the hospital but is expected to be okay. The pharmacy owner returned fire on the suspects, killing one of them. The other suspect got away. At this point, investigators believe the pharmacy owner acted in self-defense. A motive is also unclear. Though it was originally reported as an armed robbery, police said because the suspects simply walked in and started shooting, their intentions are unknown. 1926 Traction Manually Controlled Otis elevator @ Redlands Galleria (Former Harris Dept. Store) – Video

1926 Traction Manually Controlled Otis elevator @ Redlands Galleria (Former Harris Dept. Store) Redlands, California. MY FIRST MANUALLY CONTROLLED, CRANK OPERATED ELEVATOR!! And probably the only in Southern California! Like most of the area, this building was originally orange trees (something Redlands is known for). A new dry goods store and pharmacy (and a local family) built the building in 1903. I'm not sure if the building was originally split, or if it was 2 stories, but it was split. In the late 1910's or early 1920's, the family modernized the building for Harris. Either during the modernization or while Harris was there, the building was burnt to ground. Harris rebuilt the building and opened in 1926. I don't know how long they were in the building, but they moved to the Redlands Mall (just down the street) before they were bought out by Gottshalks. And listen to that motor it almost sounds hydraulic!! There was an employee operating the elevator, so I had to hide the camera to get the motor, but I didn't cover the mic! The gate was removed at some point. Original Brand: Otis Model: N/A Modernized By: N/A Capacity: 1800 … Continue reading

Depressed stroke survivors may face triple the risk of death

Posted: Published on January 13th, 2013

Jan. 11, 2013 People who are depressed after a stroke may have a tripled risk of dying early and four times the risk of death from stroke than people who have not experienced a stroke or depression, according to a study released January 12 that will be presented at the American Academy of Neurology's 65th Annual Meeting in San Diego, March 16 to 23, 2013. "Up to one in three people who have a stroke develop depression," said study author Amytis Towfighi, MD, with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center in Los Angeles, and a member of the American Academy of Neurology. "This is something family members can help watch for that could potentially save their loved one." Towfighi noted that similar associations have been found regarding depression and heart attack, but less is known about the association between stroke, depression and death. The research included 10,550 people between the ages of 25 and 74 followed for 21 years. Of those, 73 had a stroke but did not develop depression, 48 had stroke and depression, 8,138 did not have a stroke or depression and 2,291 did not have … Continue reading
