Experimental Drug Helps Mice With Spinal Cord Injuries

Posted: Published on January 13th, 2013

Millions of people around the world suffer from severe spinal cord injuries that result in permanent loss of control of their arms or legs, or loss of bladder, bowel or sexual functions. Now, US researchers have developed an oral medication that offers hope that some of these lost functions could be regained. When given to laboratory mice shortly after a spinal cord injury, the drug restored the animals' mobility. The experimental drug, called LM11A-31, works by blocking the release of a protein that after spinal cord injuries destroys oligodendrocytes, which are nerve cells that surround and protect axons. Axons are the long, thread-like nerve-cell projections that help transmit motor impulses between the brain and the rest of the body. In experiments with mice with crippling spinal cord injuries similar to those seen in humans, the drug overcame a major hurdle in conventional therapies. The compound easily crossed the blood-brain barrier - the natural partition that protects the brain from potentially harmful foreign substances in the bloodstream - and prevented the normal post-injury die-off of oligodendrocytes. Sung Ok Yoon, a molecular biologist at Ohio State University Columbus, led the study. Four hours after the mice were injured, Yoon said, researchers began … Continue reading

Arizona DHS: State leads in treatment for traumatic brain injuries

Posted: Published on January 13th, 2013

It is estimated that 1,000 people die every week from traumatic brain injuries in the United States. But if you suffer a severe brain injury in Arizona, the National Institutes of Health say you will likely receive the best emergency services treatment available in the country. The National Institutes of Health chose Arizona as the only state to evaluate the national standards for prehospital emergency care of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). With Arizonas Excellence in Prehospital Injury Care (EPIC) project. Nearly 100 fire departments and ground/air ambulance companies have been trained in the national standards, covering more than 80 percent of the population. Those agencies send treatment information to the Arizona Department of Health Services and The University of Arizona College of Medicine for tracking and evaluation. The EPIC partnership across the state is allowing the implementation and evaluation of state-of-the-art treatment at the scene of an accident and is tracking how EMS care impacts the final outcome of patients, said Dr. Daniel Spaite, Professor of Emergency Medicine at The University of Arizona College of Medicine. We know that treatment decisions immediately after a severe brain injury are critical. That response, in the first few minutes after TBI, may have … Continue reading

Stem-Cell Research Can Proceed as Court Rejects Appeal

Posted: Published on January 13th, 2013

The U.S. Supreme Court let federal funding continue for human embryonic stem-cell research, turning away an appeal that accused the Obama administration of skirting federal law. The justices today left intact a federal appeals court ruling that said the National Institutes of Health could keep sponsoring medical research using embryonic stem cells. Two researchers who rely on adult stem cells, rather than embryonic ones, James Sherley and Theresa Deisher, sued to challenge the funding. President Barack Obama expanded embryonic stem-cell research when he took office in 2009, lifting restrictions put in place by his predecessor, George W. Bush. The NIH under Bush limited funding to projects that used then-existing lines of stem cells. In lifting the limits, Obama said embryonic stem cells could aid creation of new treatments for diseases and injuries, including Parkinsons, juvenile diabetes and severed spinal cords. Embryonic stem cells, which are derived from days-old human embryos, have the potential to form any of the bodys 200 or so cell types, such as nerve cells or brain cells, and to repair or replace damaged tissue or organs. Adult stem cells, found in living tissue, have a more limited potential to become other cell types. Opponents of embryonic … Continue reading
