DOH: Stem cell therapy dangerous

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2013

By JENNY F. MANONGDO Manila, Philippines Doctors yesterday warned against fatal complications of the use of stem cell therapy. According to the Philippine Society for Stem Cell Medicine (PSSCM), a stem cell transplant poses a host of complications, including fatal complications that depend on several factors such as the type of blood disorder, type of transplant and the age and health of the person receiving the transplant. If the stem cell that you received is not from your own body, it could lead to fatal complications, PSSCM said. The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) also warned that a patients body may reject the transplant stem cells from a donor. Although some people experience few problems with a transplant, others may develop complications that may require treatment or hospitalization. Some complications could even be life-threatening, said Dr. Leo Olarte, PMA vice-president. According to Olarte, the complications that can arise with a stem cell transplant include graftversus-host disease, stem cell (graft) failure, organ injury, infections, cataracts, infertility, new cancers, and even death. According to Olarte, a person who will undergo a stem cell transplant from a donor (allogeneic stem cell transplant) may be at risk of graft-versus-host disease. This condition occurs when a … Continue reading

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) January 10, 2013 The prescription resource center DrugRisk.com has added information to its comprehensive database for women using the vaginal ring contraceptive NuvaRing which shows the number of claims filed over blood clot injuries has increased. The mission of DrugRisk is to improve patient safety through education, including the latest drug warnings, recalls, studies and litigation news. On June 14, 2012, the New England Journal of Medicine also published a study finding vaginal ring contraceptives could relate to a 2.5 to 3-fold increased risk of blood clots. Now, the resource center has learned that the number of NuvaRing lawsuits filed over blood clots has risen by nearly 5% to 1076 from the last report, according to … Continue reading

Cancer studies often downplay chemo side effects

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2013

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Doctors relying on studies published in top journals for guidance about how to treat women with breast cancer may not be getting the most accurate information, according to a new analysis. "Investigators want to go overboard to make their studies look positive," said Dr. Ian Tannock, the senior author of the new study in the Annals of Oncology. In two-thirds of the 164 studies Tannock and his colleagues scrutinized, that meant not listing toxicities - in other words, serious side effects, whether of chemotherapy, radiation or surgery - in the paper's abstract. Such abstracts summarize the findings, and run a few hundred words. That's important, said Tannock, of Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, because "most of us are so damn busy, we only read the abstract and skim the tables and figures." In fact, a fifth of studies didn't include toxicities in results tables, and about a third failed to mention them in either the abstract or the discussion section. Most surprising, said Tannock, was that in a third of studies, if the treatment didn't work as well as one might hope, researchers moved the goalposts, reporting results that weren't what the study was originally … Continue reading

The DrugRisk Resource Center is the Webs largest source for information on prescription drug warnings, side effects and legal news. Visit http://www.DrugRisk.com Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 10, 2013 DrugRisks goal is to improve patient safety through education of the latest drug warnings, recalls, studies and litigation news. In some cases, litigation can provide a look into drug studies and safety risks that werent previously made public, explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer. The resource center recently advised of a warning by Australias Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) that the government may no longer furnish Pradaxa due to concerns that it is being prescribed at doses and patient ages not tested in clinical trials.* In the United States, experts disagree about the safety of Pradaxa and its bleeding risks. The FDA recently updated Pradaxa warnings to say the drug carries the same risks as warfarin.** However, the New York Times also reported doctors concerns that Pradaxa led all medications for adverse reports and currently has no antidote for internal bleeding.*** Due to the number of patients filing a Pradaxa lawsuit over internal bleeding, the cases have been moved to a special federal court in Illinois, formally known as MDL No. 2385, IN … Continue reading

More drug-related crimes in Maine

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2013

WINTHROP, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Between pharmacy robberies, home invasions, and shootings, Maine police are seeing a common connection and recent crime: drug dependency. Winthrop Police say that's the reason four masked men barged in to a 71-year-old woman's home over the weekend, pushing her over and putting her to the floor as they searched her mobile home for prescription drugs. Police Chief Joseph Young said the four suspects are still at large. They made off with money, but no drugs. "There are more people that are drug dependent, that are doing desperate things," said Chief Young. He said the town of Winthrop has seen a 12 percent increase in theft over the last year, and while home invasions are not common, he is seeing them happen around the state more frequently. "They're happening...and I think it's all drug-related," said Chief Young. In Lebanon, police are investigating a possible connection to prescription drugs in a shooting on Tuesday. Investigators say Richard Potorski came home for lunch to find an intruder in his home. The suspect shot Potorski in the shoulder, then stole his car. It was later found abandonded ina Rochester, New Hampshire parking lot. Investigatos say they are no … Continue reading
