DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/4gllbg/cell_therapy) has announced the addition of Jain PharmaBiotech's new report "Cell Therapy - Technologies, Markets and Companies" to their offering. This report describes and evaluates cell therapy technologies and methods, which have already started to play an important role in the practice of medicine. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is replacing the old fashioned bone marrow transplants. Role of cells in drug discovery is also described. Cell therapy is bound to become a part of medical practice. Stem cells are discussed in detail in one chapter. Some light is thrown on the current controversy of embryonic sources of stem cells and comparison with adult sources. Other sources of stem cells such as the placenta, cord blood and fat removed by liposuction are also discussed. Stem cells can also be genetically modified prior to transplantation. Cell therapy technologies overlap with those of gene therapy, cancer vaccines, drug delivery, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Pharmaceutical applications of stem cells including those in drug discovery are also described. Various types of cells used, methods of preparation and culture, encapsulation and genetic engineering of cells are discussed. Sources of cells, both human and animal (xenotransplantation) are discussed. Methods of delivery … Continue reading

New protein to treat damaged bones uncovered

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2013

Jan. 9, 2013 Korean researchers believe that the 'DJ-1 protein' can be used to promote the formation of new bone tissue in patients suffering from osteoporosis by improving communication between bone making cells (osteoblasts) and blood vessel (endothelial) cells. The research was published in Nature Communications. Professor Pann-Gill Suh and Dr. Jung-Min Kim at the School of Nano-Bioscience and Chemical Engineering, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) identified DJ-1 as a novel mediator of the cross-talk between osteoblasts and endothelial cells by screening molecules secreted from as yet undifferentiated human skeletal cells. These skeletal cells, also known as mesenchymal stem cells, have the ability to develop into fully fledged bone cells (osteoblasts). The researchers showed that DJ-1 stimulates the differentiation of the yet undifferentiated skeletal cells into bone cells by activating fibroblasts, cells which in turn ensure connective tissue growth. Working with rodents, they were able to uncover previously undefined extracellular roles of DJ-1, to promote angiogenesis and osteogenesis, suggesting DJ-1 may have therapeutic potential to stimulate bone regeneration. Regenerative medicine: Clinical trials launched for the treatment of delayed union fractures

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2013

Public release date: 9-Jan-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Pierre LAYROLLE pierre.layrolle@inserm.fr 33-027-264-1143 INSERM (Institut national de la sant et de la recherche mdicale) The clinical trials aim to repair bones using adult stem cells combined with biomaterials. It will be conducted in France in the Crteil University Hospital Centre and the Regional University Hospital Centre in Tours, in collaboration with the French Blood Establishment. The REBORNE project began three years ago and its originality lies in using mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), found in bone marrow, to help heal fractures. Adult stem cells are amplified in culture, then are associated with biomaterial before being implanted on the fracture. Promising pre-clinical trials have now paved the way for the launch of these new clinical trials. Following trauma (fall or road accident), there is a high incidence of delayed union or non-union in tibia, femur or humerus bones requiring a surgical apposition of an autologous bone graft (patient's own bone). However, the bone graft available is limited and complications are often observed at the second surgical site. The partners of the European project REBORNE propose an alternative treatment using autologous mesenchymal stem cells associated with a synthetic bone substitute. Thanks … Continue reading

Harborside Patients Speak: Where will I get my medicine? – Video

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2013

Harborside Patients Speak: Where will I get my medicine? On July 10, 2012, federal agents taped a notice of property forfeiture to the doors of Harborside Health Center, a medical cannabis dispensary located in Oakland and San Jose, Calif. If successful, this federal action would shut down Harborside, forcing thousands of patients back into the underground, illegal market. The closure of Harborside would have an especially destructive effect on California's most medically challenged patients, who are less able to negotiate the dangers of the illegal marketplace, and cannot risk using untested cannabis from unregulated sources. Likewise, the patients featured in this video who volunteered their stories are afraid that if Harborside closes, they will have no reliable, safe source for the medicine they depend on. NORML estimates that there are now over 1.1 million medical cannabis patients in the state of California alone. Patients use medical cannabis to alleviate suffering from a wide range of conditions, including arthritis, cancer, migraine headaches, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma and HIV-AIDS. Harborside Health Center was founded in 2006 to ensure these medical cannabis patients receive medicine that is safe and effective, and is provided in full compliance with state law. Since then Harborside has … Continue reading

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (LGND) announced today that it has received a milestone payment of 620,000 shares of common stock in newly public partner Retrophin, Inc. (RTRX). The milestone arose under the previously executed license agreement for the development and commercialization of Retrophins lead clinical candidate RE-021, formerly known as DARA (a Dual Acting Receptor Antagonist of Angiotensin and Endothelin receptors) and was triggered by the completion of Retrophins merger with Desert Gateway, Inc. and its transition to a publicly traded company. Ligand will record milestone revenue equal to the estimated fair value of the shares received, which will be determined by an independent valuation firm. The shares issued to Ligand represent approximately 7% of Retrophins outstanding capital stock and may be subject to certain trading restrictions. RE-021 is in development for the treatment of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), a rare disease that attacks the kidneys filtering system (glomeruli), causing serious scarring, progressive kidney function degeneration and rapid loss of the kidneys. FSGS is one cause of a serious condition known as Nephrotic Syndrome. An estimated 50,000 patients in the United States suffer from FSGS, with most patients diagnosed as children or young adults. Stem Cells Finding Could One Day Lead to Halt of Deadly Heart Complication in Duchenne MD

Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013

Researchers have discovered what could be the first step in preventing the onset of a heart complication that kills one out of every five people suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). The results were just published in STEM CELLS Translational Medicine. Durham, NC (PRWEB) January 08, 2013 In DMD, the most common form of muscular dystrophy, patients lack a large, rod-like protein called dystrophin located primarily in muscles used for movement and in heart muscle. The dystrophin is part of a group of proteins that acts as an anchor, connecting each muscle cell's structural framework with the lattice of proteins and other molecules outside the cell. Without dystrophin, many of the muscle cells in the heart are damaged, subsequently die and are replaced by connective tissue. Many Duchenne MD patients suffer from dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a condition in which the chambers of the heart are enlarged and weakened, explained the studys lead author, Suzanne Berry, Ph.D. As a result the heart cant efficiently pump blood to the body and many patients eventually die. We hypothesized that mesoangioblast stem cells (ADM) found in the walls of large blood vessels, in this case the aorta, would restore dystrophin and therefore alleviate or … Continue reading

Kasich Signs Bill Mandating Autism-Related Insurance Coverage

Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013

Gov. John Kasich signed a bill on Wednesday, mandating private health insurance to cover autism-related expenses. Reggie Fields, the co-founder of the Living Beyond Autism Foundation, said that the signing on Wednesday was a huge step forward. It is going to give an opportunity for families to get access to certain types of care that will be covered by their insurance now, Fields said. Fields son Grant was diagnosed with autism when he was 3. He said that several years ago, information about autism was not widely available, and medical services were not covered by insurance. Autism diagnoses have risen nearly 80 percent in the past decade. You know a lot of things we wanted to do for our child just wasnt financially feasible for us, Fields said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that one out of 88 children have symptoms of autism. The new law will provide access to early childhood therapy for thousands in Ohio beginning next year. It will mandate that private health insurance cover Applied Behavior Analysis for autism.. Benefits also now are available to state employees. Business groups, like the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, remain opposed to the new law. Originally posted … Continue reading

Gov. Kasich Signs Directive Mandating Coverage For Autism

Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013

Credit: NBC4 Governor John Kasich joined Autism advocates Wednesday morning to celebrate a new mandate for health insurance coverage of Autism services. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Governor John Kasich joined Autism advocates Wednesday morning to celebrate a new mandate for health insurance coverage of Autism services. The new mandate will provide access to early childhood therapy for thousands of Ohio children beginning in 2014. On Wednesday, lawmakers and Autism advocates joined Kasich for a ceremonial signing of the order. The lack of coverage to date has forced many families with autistic children to make difficult choices about how much, if any, treatment they can afford. "So now as a parent, I'm forced to provide my son with limited resources, limited opportunities to appropriate care because that's what my family budget will allow," said Reggie Fields, a parent of an autistic child. The governor says he feels this is the right thing to do. Autism advocates call the directive their Christmas miracle. Just days before the holiday, Kasich announced that he would sign the executive order requiring insurance coverage for Autism treatments. Some business groups have opposed the new mandate because of the added cost to employee health insurance, and some claim … Continue reading
