Parkinson's disease itself does not increase risk of gambling, shopping addiction, study finds

Posted: Published on January 8th, 2013

Jan. 7, 2013 Parkinson's disease itself does not increase the risk of impulse control problems such as compulsive gambling and shopping that have been seen in people taking certain drugs for Parkinson's disease, according to new research published in the January 8, 2013, print issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. "We've known for some time that these behaviors are more common in people taking certain Parkinson's medications, but we haven't known if the disease itself leads to an increased risk of these behaviors," said study author Daniel Weintraub, MD, of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia. The study involved 168 people who had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and had not yet taken any medications for the disease. They were compared to 143 people of similar ages who did not have the disease. The participants were given a questionnaire asking how often they had impulse control symptoms such as compulsive gambling, shopping, sexual behavior or eating. Participants were also asked about aimless wandering, punding (which is excessive repetition of non-goal directed activity, such as continual handling and sorting of common objects) and hobbyism (the compulsive pursuit of a hobby … Continue reading

"When looking at newly diagnosed Parkinson's patients who had yet to be treated with drugs targeting the dopamine system, we saw no difference in impulsivity than what we found in healthy people without the disease," said lead study author Daniel Weintraub, MD, associate professor of Psychiatry and Neurology in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Out of sight, out of mind? How the brain codes its surroundings beyond the field of view

Posted: Published on January 8th, 2013

Jan. 7, 2013 Even when they are not directly in sight, we are aware of our surroundings: so it is that when our eyes are fixed on an interesting book, for example, we know that the door is to the right, the bookshelf is to the left and the window is behind us. However, research into the brain has so far concerned itself predominantly with how information from our field of vision is coded in the visual cortex. To date it has not been known how the brain codes our surroundings beyond the field of view from an egocentric perspective (that is, from the point of view of the observer). In the latest issue of the journal Current Biology, Andreas Schindler and Andreas Bartels, scientists at the Werner Reichardt Center for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN) of the University of Tbingen, present for the first time direct evidence of this kind of spatial information in the brain. The participants in their study found themselves in the center of a virtual octagonal room, with a unique object in each corner. As the brain's activity was monitored by means of functional magnetic resonance imaging, the participants stood in front of one corner and looked … Continue reading

New First-In-Class Treatment Fycompa® (Perampanel) Approved In Switzerland For Partial Epilepsy

Posted: Published on January 8th, 2013

Perampanel is the first and only licensed anti-epileptic drug (AED) to selectively target AMPA receptors, a protein in the brain which plays a critical role in causing seizures.[2] This mechanism of action is different to other, currently available AEDs. In addition, perampanel has the added benefit of convenient, once-daily dosing at bedtime[1] and, significantly, is the only new-generation partial epilepsy treatment approved to treat adolescents with epilepsy from launch. "The approval of Fycompa by Swissmedic is very good news for both doctors and patients as the new drug provides a valuable new option for the treatment of partial-onset epilepsy. Uncontrolled seizures can severely impact patient quality of life and this new treatment may potentially help people in Switzerland achieve better seizure control, " commented Dr Med Guenter Kraemer, Medical Director, Swiss Epilepsy Centre. "In addition, Fycompa has the added benefit of once daily dosing, which may optimise adherence in patients already taking other medicines." An estimated 70,000 people live with epilepsy in Switzerland.[3] Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions in the world.[4] The successful treatment of partial-onset seizures (the most common type of epilepsy) remains a challenge. Up to 30% of patients with partial-onset seizures do not … Continue reading
