Autism center brings hope to Kitsap families

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

We have a little boy. Hes 3. Hes been here for about six months. His mom called the other day in the evening and shes like, He said his name. I said, What is your name? And he said, My names Caleb. Alicia Hartnett, Olympic Peninsula Autism Centers program director, told this story in early December. She was so happy because hed never said his name before, Hartnett said. Olympic Peninsula Autism Center is a nonprofit operation providing therapy for the west side of Puget Sound out of its facility in Silverdale. The autism center passed its one year anniversary in November. It was founded last year by John and Sara Hall. The Halls have two young daughters, both diagnosed with autism. Before opening the center, they were taking their daughters to Kirkland multiple times a week for treatment. Despite a clear need for autism services in the area, Kitsap County lacked many resources, until the Halls started Olympic Peninsula Autism Center. The center officially merged with Easter Seals Disability Services in September, providing the stability and financial resources of the much larger nonprofit. Olympic Peninsula uses Applied Behavior Analysis, a system where therapists tailor programs individually for each child … Continue reading

Autism treatment options opening up

Wayne Allen PDT Staff Writer Gov. John Kasich recently announced a policy change that will allow Ohio families with children with autism to have access to needed services. According to released information from Kasichs communication department, the general assembly has been debating legislation that would make autism services a mandated benefit in Ohios private health insurance market, and Kasich make his decision to expand the availability of services for children with autism only after close consultation with legislative leaders and members of both chambers. When we have the chance to do the right thing, we better do it because we dont want to live life with any regrets. Were doing the right thing today. Helping kids with autism get the services they need, and helping their parents get the financial lifeline of insurance coverage, thats something I support for state employees and other families as well. With early intervention, kids with autism do better at school, find employment, and become more independent, connected adults in our communities, Kasich said in a released statement. I continue to be inspired by the courage of so many committed families who work and fight to give their kids the best possible chance and success. … Continue reading

Autism services now covered by insurance in Ohio

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

Requiring many health insurance plans to cover autism services will provide relief to families trying to make sure their children get the treatment they need, the head of a local autism group said. Ohio Gov. John Kasich last week announced policy changes that would require state employee health insurance, private insurers and coverage purchased through the coming federally mandated health care exchange to pay for assessments, treatment plans, speech and occupational therapy and treatment aimed at improving communication and social skills for children with autism. "If you have to pay out of your pocket for the speech therapy and language and the OT, you can get up into a couple thousand dollars a month," said Mark Weihl, president of the board of directors for the Autism Center of Southeastern Ohio. "The financial impact can escalate pretty quickly." Weihl's 9-year-old son, Jack, was diagnosed with autism and now attends Putnam Elementary School, something he said would not have been possible without early diagnosis and therapy to strengthen his ability to interact with other children and perform age-appropriate activities. The change is something Marietta resident Karen Smith, treasurer for the board, believes should have happened a long time ago. Her son, Nicholas, … Continue reading

Dr. Chris Vanderzant When it comes to stroke, remembering the acronym FAST can be lifesaving: FACE droop ARM drift downward SPEECH slurred TIME is important When a stroke occurs, brain tissue is immediately affected and starts to die. This is why every second counts if you or a loved one experience these symptoms. Call 911 immediately if you or a loved one is experiencing any of these symptoms. Spinal cord injury won’t stop Crafton man from living

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

Published: Wednesday, December 26, 2012, 8:57p.m. Updated: Wednesday, December 26, 2012 Paul Hickling remembers the moment a neurologist told him he wouldnt be able to walk or use his arms again. I threw him out of the room, said Hickling, 55, of Crafton. I said, how dare you tell somebody that, that theyre never going to walk again! Because at that point, I could have just decided Im just going to lay in bed the rest of my life. That didnt happen. Hickling, who suffered a spinal cord injury in April 2010 and spent the next several months in various hospitals and treatment facilities, eventually regained that all-important ability. While Hickling still cant feel temperature or pain from his chest down, he has the ability to walk and has limited use of his arms and hands. He still is classified as a quadriplegic because he doesnt have full use of all his limbs, but thats a far cry from what could have been. Hicklings injury is between the C6 and C7 levels of his spinal cord. Injuries at that level of the spinal cord typically affect hands, wrists and arms but also can affect trunk and leg use. Every doctor … Continue reading
