U.S. children's hospitals treating more complex, expensive conditions

By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter THURSDAY, Dec. 27 (HealthDay News) -- An in-depth profile of many U.S. children's hospitals suggests that children with complex chronic diseases such as cerebral palsy are taking up an increasingly larger share of hospital resources. The finding raises concerns about how well freestanding pediatric hospitals can handle a rapidly growing group of patients that are, by definition, difficult and expensive to care for. "Children with medical complexity are often relying on a myriad of services to get their health care needs met," said study lead author Dr. Jay Berry, an assistant professor of pediatrics with Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. "These services include primary and specialty care, home nursing and case management." Most children seen in hospitals are healthy overall, but require treatment for an acute sickness, such as pneumonia, the authors stressed. But a minority of children suffer from lifelong chronic sickness, such as those born with heart disease; neurological diseases such as cerebral palsy, which impairs muscle tone and movement; or Down syndrome, a chromosomal disorder that affects the nervous system and may include heart, hearing and skeletal problems. Spastic quadriplegia is the most severe form of cerebral palsy, in which all four limbs and the trunk are affected. Born fourteen weeks premature, one of twins, Lennon spent his first thirteen weeks in hospital, and suffered from chronic lung disease, which threatened his life. An undiagnosed hernia, followed by a major operation followed, before Lennon was finally allowed home to mum Lisa, dad Liam and twin sister Kayla. Since then, Lennon was diagnosed in November 2011 with Spastic Quadriplegia Cerebral Palsy affecting all four limbs. This is the most severe form of Cerebral Palsy, where all four limbs and the trunk are affected, as well as difficulty in controlling muscles in the mouth and tongue. Further complications associated with this condition include seizures, bowel and bladder dysfunction, scoliosis, hip dislocation, tooth decay and skin sores. Lennon was further diagnosed with Profound Neurodevelopmental delay, where a childs basic survival instincts are not inhibited, as is the norm. The 23-year-old Delhi gangrape victim has significant brain injury, infection in lungs and abdomen and she is currently struggling against all odds at Mount Elizabeth Hospital where her condition continues to be "extremely critical", the hospital said today. "Our medical team's investigations upon her arrival at the hospital yesterday showed that in addition to her prior cardiac arrest, she also had infection of her lungs and abdomen, as well as significant brain injury," said Dr Kelvin Loh, Chief Executive Officer, Mount Elizabeth Hospital. In a statement, Dr Loh said, "The patient is currently struggling against the odds, and fighting for her life." Briefing reporters here on girl's condition, Loh said, "As at 28 December, 11am (8:30 IST) the patient continues to remain in an extremely critical condition." New Delhi: According to the latest health update by the Singapore hospital treating the Delhi gangrape survivor, the 23-year-old has suffered significant brain injury and is struggling against odds for survival. The medical bulletin issued by Mount Elizabeth Hospital at 11.00 am read, "The patient continues to remain in an extremely critical condition. She is still receiving treatment at... The 23-year- old medical student was airlifted to Singapore Wednesday night for specialized treatment. The girl was brutally raped by five men and a juvenile in a moving bus in New Delhi Dec. 16. She sustained grave internal and external injuries and her situation was described as extremely critical by the medical team treating her. "Our medical team's investigations upon her arrival at the hospital yesterday showed that in addition to her prior cardiac arrest, she also had infection of her lungs and abdomen as well as significant brain injury," Loh said, according to a Reuters report. The condition of the 23-year-old physiotherapy student who was gang-raped in New Delhi and is fighting for her life at Mount Elizabeth Hospital here has taken a turn for the worse, an official said. Mount Elizabeth chief executive officer Kelvin Loh said in a statement: Her vital signs are deteriorating with signs of severe organ failure. This is despite doctors fighting for her life including putting her on maximum artificial ventilation support, optimal antibiotic doses as well as stimulants which maximise her bodys capability to fight infections, he said. The Indian gang-rape victim airlifted to a Singapore hospital has a brain injury and is battling against the odds to survive, an official says. In a bulletin issued the day after her arrival in Singapore, doctors at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital said the 23-year-old was battling an infection in her lungs and remained critically ill after the December 16 assault in Delhi.
