Judge orders HRC Medical Centers to stop making misleading claims in advertising

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

A judge has ordered a company specializing in hormone replacement to stop making false and misleading claims in its advertising. The court says HRC Medical Centers intentionally did not tell patients about the potential risks of the treatments. HRC Medical Centers operates three clinics in Tennessee, including one in Knoxville. The company is accused of not telling patients about possible health risks and side effects of its bio-medical hormone replacement therapy, or BHRT. Back in October, the state attorney general's office launched an investigation into the procedures. Friday, a Davidson County court judge issued a temporary injunction prohibiting HRC from making claims that its hormone therapy is safe, involves no cancer risk, and has no or minimal side effects. According to the general's office, the hormone therapy can cause blood clots, strokes, heart attacks, cancer and other side effects in both men and women. In past interviews with 10News, former HRC Chief Officer Dan Hale said their procedures are safe. Friday the judge also appointed a Nashville attorney to take full control and operate HRC. The attorney general's office says it's pleased with the ruling. Anyone who has taken HRC's bio-medical hormone replacement therapy is encouraged to contact his or … Continue reading

HRC Medical’s Assets Under Court Control

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- A Nashville judge has dealt a stunning blow to HRC Medical, the Franklin based hormone replacement company first exposed in a NewsChannel 5 investigation late last year. On Friday, Judge Amanda McLendon put HRC and its assets under the control of a court appointed attorney. This comes after the Tennessee Attorney General sued HRC earlier this year for making unsubstantiated and misleading claims about its bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. HRC had claimed that its treatment was safe, did not pose any cancer risks, and had no to minimal side effects. The judge ordered HRC to stop making these claims and to warn consumers of the possible risks and side effects. "We are pleased with the court's ruling," Attorney General Cooper said, "and urge any consumer who has taken HRC's alternative regimen of 'bio-identical' hormone replacement therapy to contact his or her health care provider about any potential adverse health effects from the therapy as soon as possible." The case is still slated to go to trial. The judge said in her order that based on the evidence she heard, it's highly likely the Attorney General would win. Judge restricts hormone replacement company

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) A Franklin-based hormone replacement therapy company has been placed under control of a court-appointed lawyer and ordered to stop making misleading claims about the treatment. Davidson County Circuit Judge Amanda McClendon ordered HRC Medical Centers Inc. and its assets under control of Nashville attorney John McLemore. McLemore is required to make sure the company is operated legally. Attorney General Bob Cooper said in a news release Friday that a temporary injunction prohibits HRC Medical Centers Inc., HRC Management Midwest LLC, owner Don Hale and former company officer Dan Hale from making claims that the treatments are safe, involve no cancer risk and have no or minimal side effects. HRC did not immediately return a call to its corporate headquarters Friday seeking comment. The state sued the company and the Hales in October under the Tennessee Consumer Protection Act. 2012 Associated Press. All rights reserved. Adopted smish thank you 20121228_7.wmv My terrible circumstances have made me lonely - I have three marriages and one daughter who is 26 going on 27. My first two spouses were abusers, then I got a wonderful Pastor husband and he passed away. We used to fight stem cell research on embryos ( fine on umbilical chords, in fact statistically much more successful) so we "adopted" all the embryos - so I believe the Lord Jesus brings me these embryos - even if He doesn't I enjoyed believing my students are my children until they turned into resident evil monsters - I lost my ability to have children in 97 through disease - and used that to save babies, so bear with me, I prefer to think good thoughts then realize how horrible my life truly is By: susanaltar … Continue reading

2013: Year of the Stem Cell

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

Researchers have already safely injected stem cells into patients with neurodegenerative diseases and spinal cord injuries -- and they've seen the potential to vastly improve lives. Knut Olstad in August 2011, 20 minutes before the accident that left him paralyzed below the waist Marcus Hilton has probably been going blind since he was born, though he didn't really begin to notice that something was wrong until he was seven or eight. Several years after that, he was officially diagnosed with Stargardt disease, the leading cause of juvenile blindness. Thirty-four years of decline later, his retinas irreparably damaged, he is unable to drive, read fine print, or recognize people from a distance. For Knut Olstad, devastation came much more suddenly. Having quit smoking and taken up cross-country skiing and bicycling in an early mid-life crisis, he was 45 years old and on what he described as the vacation of his life, conquering 25 mountains on the Tour de France route. On the last descent of the twenty-fifth mountain, on what might even have been the final turn of the entire trip, a car veered into his lane. He swerved out of the way, squeezed just a little too hard on the … Continue reading

Cutting the cord now stores new hope for stem cell research

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

Topics: babies, health, lifestyle, research, science, stem cells YOU are full of billions of them. They are the building blocks of life. They are stem cells, and very few of us pay them the respect they deserve. Not because we don't care; we just don't realise how remarkable they are. What are stem cells? Our bodies are made up of about 200 different kinds of specialised cells (such as muscle cells, nerve cells, fat cells and skin cells). All of these specialised cells originate from stem cells. A stem cell is basically a cell that is not yet specialised; a blank canvas. Stem cells can be divided into two broad groups: those that can go on to become any type of cell in the body (pluripotent), and those that can only become certain types of cells (multipotent). Three new genetic links to colorectal cancer

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

Dec. 23, 2012 Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center investigators have identified three new genetic "hotspots" linked to colorectal cancer. These variants, reported Dec. 23 in an Advanced Online Publication in Nature Genetics, provide new insight into the biology of colorectal cancer -- and could represent new therapeutic targets for the disease. Colorectal cancer is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide -- and rates are particularly high in the United States and other developed countries. Genetics plays an important role in both sporadic and familial (inherited) forms of the disease. However, only about 6 percent of colorectal cancer cases are explained by the rare genetic variants known to confer high risk of colorectal cancer (as seen in familial forms of the disease). Previous studies on the genetic basis of colorectal cancer have pinpointed several additional variants, but most of the studies were conducted in European/Caucasian populations. "Looking at different ethnic groups is important because the genetic structures can be different enough that variants identified in one population do not explain risk in other populations," said Wei Zheng, M.D., Ph.D., MPH, an Ingram Professor of Cancer Research and senior author on the study. "Because of the difference in genetic structures and underlying … Continue reading
