2013: Year of the Stem Cell

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2012

Researchers have already safely injected stem cells into patients with neurodegenerative diseases and spinal cord injuries -- and they've seen the potential to vastly improve lives. Knut Olstad in August 2011, 20 minutes before the accident that left him paralyzed below the waist Marcus Hilton has probably been going blind since he was born, though he didn't really begin to notice that something was wrong until he was seven or eight. Several years after that, he was officially diagnosed with Stargardt disease, the leading cause of juvenile blindness. Thirty-four years of decline later, his retinas irreparably damaged, he is unable to drive, read fine print, or recognize people from a distance. For Knut Olstad, devastation came much more suddenly. Having quit smoking and taken up cross-country skiing and bicycling in an early mid-life crisis, he was 45 years old and on what he described as the vacation of his life, conquering 25 mountains on the Tour de France route. On the last descent of the twenty-fifth mountain, on what might even have been the final turn of the entire trip, a car veered into his lane. Coram Specialty Infusion Services to Provide Gattex (R) Drug to be Used as Treatment for Short Bowel Syndrome

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2012

DENVER, Dec. 27, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Coram Specialty Infusion Services, a leading national provider of specialty home infusion and specialty pharmaceutical distribution services, has announced that it has become an approved limited distribution provider for NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. of Gattex (teduglutide [rDNA origin]) for injection. Gattex is a novel, recombinant analog of human glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2), a peptide involved in normal intestinal function and fluid and nutrient absorption. A New Drug Application for Gattex, for use in treatment of short bowel syndrome (SBS) in adults, was approved on December 21 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The unique mechanism of Gattex would make it the first and only long-term therapy that treats the underlying cause of SBS, a rare disorder in which nutrients are not properly absorbed because a large part of the small intestine is missing or has been surgically removed. Gattex works by helping patients increase their ability to absorb nutrients and fluids. Many SBS patients depend on IV nutrition, also called parenteral nutrition (PN), to meet their nutrition needs, and Gattex can reduce or even eliminate patients' dependence on PN therapy. If approved, Gattex will be available through Coram's network of more than … Continue reading

Aubrey Ireland – Video

Posted: Published on December 28th, 2012

Aubrey Ireland A 21-year-old theatre student has obtained a civil stalking restraining order against her parents after convincing a judge that they attempt to control all aspects of her daily life. A US music student has won a restraining order against her parents after they hounded her to ensure that she was successful. Aubrey Ireland said that she felt like a "a dog with a collar on" after her pushy parents attempted to control her life. The 21-year-old aspiring stage star said the problems began soon after she started studying at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati - one of the most exclusive music schools in the United States. David and Julie Ireland would often drive 600 miles from their home in Leawood, Kansas, and arrive unannounced to check up on her, the court heard. The couple also admitted to installing monitoring software on her computer and phone so that they could spy on her. Ireland alleged that during their many visits they would wrongly accuse her of taking drugs and being promiscuous and also claimed that she was suffering from a mental illness.From:binojthomsonViews:0 0ratingsTime:01:39More inPeople Blogs Read more here: Aubrey Ireland - Video … Continue reading
