Posted: Published on December 27th, 2012

Abby Alonzo was eight weeks into treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma and doing great when her doctor informed the 9-year-old's parents that one ingredient in the cocktail of chemo drugs she was receiving was no longer available, and they would have to use a substitution. "It's scary, and I was alarmed but I didn't really have a sense of how critical this drug was," said Katie Alonzo, Abby's mother. PRINCETON, N.J. & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) and Pfizer Inc. (PFE) announced today that the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW) has approved ELIQUIS (apixaban) for the prevention of ischemic stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). This is the third approval for ELIQUIS for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation, following approvals in the European Union and Canada.
