US pharmacy tied to deadly nationwide meningitis outbreak files for bankruptcy protection

By Jay Lindsay, The Associated Press BOSTON - A pharmacy connected to a deadly nationwide meningitis outbreak filed for bankruptcy protection and said it was seeking to set up a fund to pay victims. Contaminated steroid injections from the New England Compounding Center have been blamed for 39 deaths and 620 illnesses since the outbreak began over the summer. The Chapter 11 filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Friday shields the company from the threat of creditor lawsuits while it establishes the fund. The company said in its filing that 130 lawsuits have been filed against it and 270 other people have claimed injury from the tainted drugs. "The number or lawsuits and demands is rising on a daily basis," the filing read. "The sheer volume and wide geographic distribution of cases bringing the prospect of chaotic, conflicting and value-destroying pretrial orders and remedies has necessitated commencing this case at this time." NECC, based in Framingham, just west of Boston, said it has hired accountant Keith D. Lowey to lead the effort to set up the compensation fund. (PRWEB) December 21, 2012 Response to the program was great, with nearly 40 submissions received nominating families affected by autism and in need of support for the holidays. From the list of worthy nominees, five individuals were chosen to receive $500 grants and a matching contribution of Special Learnings products. Nominations were received from states across the nation, and the winners are representative of five different states. They include: The first-of-its-kind campaign, which gives back directly to the families, ran from December 5 through December 19, and was created to raise money for families affected by autism with a financial need during the holiday season. Chelation doesn't help kids with autism: study

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Removing heavy metals from the body through a process traditionally used to treat mercury and lead poisoning doesn't help relieve autism symptoms, a new analysis suggests. During chelation therapy, patients are given injections of a chemical that binds to heavy metals, lowering their concentration in the blood and ultimately allowing the metals to be excreted through urine. Chelation gained traction as an alternative treatment for autism due to a theory that mercury poisoning might play a role in the developmental disorder. However, evidence hasn't supported that idea and it's been essentially discarded in the scientific community, researchers said. The procedure also carries safety concerns, including risks of kidney damage and gastrointestinal problems. Lead researcher Tonya Davis from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, said the study team's goal was not to tell parents which treatments they should or shouldn't seek for their children. "I see that they want to try everything, and they are well intentioned," she told Reuters Health. "But there are risks involved with any treatment choice, and some of those risks are very serious. Neon Roberts' Mum Loses Cancer Treatment Case

A seven-year-old boy should have radiotherapy treatment for cancer against his mother's wishes, a High Court judge has ruled. Mr Justice Bodey dismissed Sally Roberts' attempt to prevent the treatment being given to her son, Neon - and expressed concern over her decision-making regarding the child's welfare. Ms Roberts, 37, told the court she believed radiotherapy would cause Neon long-term harm and argued in favour of alternative treatment. However, doctors have said Neon could die within months if he does not get the radiotherapy. Mr Justice Bodey ruled that such treatment could now start. "The mother has been through a terrible time. This sort of thing is every parent's nightmare," said the judge. "But I am worried that her judgement has gone awry on the question of the seriousness of the threat which Neon faces." Ms Roberts, a New Zealander who lives in Brighton, East Sussex, had told the court she was not a "bonkers mother" and insisted on alternative treatment.
