German Court Decision May Strengthen International Stem Cell Corporation's Position in European Market

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2012

CARLSBAD, CA--(Marketwire - Dec 7, 2012) - International Stem Cell Corporation ( OTCQB : ISCO ) (www.internationalstemcell.com), a biotechnology company focused on the development of therapeutic products using parthenogenetic stem cells, heralds the recent decision by the German Federal Court of Justice, in the Greenpeace vs Brstle patent case, which may allow ISCO to take a leading position in the European market. This important ruling strengthens ISCO's position that parthenogenetic technology may be an acceptable method of producing banks of human pluripotent stem cell (hpSC) lines and derivatives for the commercial therapeutic markets in Europe.Under the ruling, patent restrictions will remain on other stem cell technologies, including embryonic stem cells, that require the destruction of human embryos. The ruling is especially timely in light of ISCO's recent announcement of the creation of new clinical grade human parthenogenetic stem cell lines in the United States. Leading stem cell biologist Professor Albrecht Mller, of the Center for Experimental Molecular Medicine, University of Wrzburg, Germany, comments, "Being able to patent cells and cell products is key to building a successful stem cell based biotechnology industry in Europe. We have already shown that hpSCs have tremendous potential to treat neurological diseases, and this new ruling makes … Continue reading

Report: CA stem cell agency needs a restructuring

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) California has transformed into a powerhouse player in stem cell research, but the taxpayer-funded institute responsible for that needs an overhaul, a report released Thursday found. The review by the Institute of Medicine lauded the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine for making the state a leader in the field by funneling research money with an eye toward stem cell therapies. But the report found too many members of the governing board represented schools that won funding and recommended a restructuring to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest. California voters in 2004 passed Proposition 71, a state ballot initiative that created CIRM, at a time when there were federal restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research and such work was opposed by some on religious and moral grounds because embryos have to be destroyed to harvest the cells. The agency was given broad power to distribute $3 billion in bond proceeds to promising research. So far, it has awarded $1.3 billion to nearly five dozen universities that went mostly to new buildings and basic research. The team of experts that reviewed the stem-cell agency's operations did not judge the merits of individual studies because it would have … Continue reading

Report: Calif. stem cell agency needs overhaul

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2012

LOS ANGELES (AP) California has transformed into a major player in stem cell research, but the taxpayer-funded institute responsible has "significant deficiencies" in how research dollars are distributed, experts said Thursday. A report by the Institute of Medicine found too many members on the board of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine represented schools that won funding and recommended a restructuring to avoid the appearance of conflict of interest. California voters in 2004 approved Proposition 71, a state ballot initiative that created CIRM, at a time when there were federal restrictions on human embryonic stem cell research and such work was opposed by some on religious and moral grounds because embryos have to be destroyed to harvest the cells. The agency was given broad power to distribute $3 billion in bond proceeds to promising research. So far, it has distributed more than $1 billion to some five dozen universities that went mostly toward investments in new buildings and basic research. The team of 13 experts that reviewed the stem-cell agency's operations did not judge the merits of individual studies because that was outside the scope of the report and it would have been too time-consuming and costly. But they raised … Continue reading

Cytomedix Announces Positive Results With Angel(R) cPRP in Veterinary Application

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2012

GAITHERSBURG, MD--(Marketwire - Dec 7, 2012) - Cytomedix, Inc. ( OTCQX : CMXI ) (the "Company"), a regenerative therapies company commercializing and developing innovative platelet and adult stem cell technologies, announced today that positive data on the Angel cPRP system in a veterinary application -- treatment of persistent mating induced endometritis (PMIE) in mares -- were recently presented at the 3rd annual conference of the North American Veterinary Regenerative Medicine Association (NAVRMA) in Savannah, GA.Treatment with PRP was shown to be associated with a statistically significant reduction in certain endometrial pro-inflammatory cytokines and inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS), both known to be involved in the pathology of PMIE. Many mares fail to respond to conventional therapies and recent studies have shown a link between PMIE and the expression of certain cytokines.Nitric oxide is also believed to play a role in uterine clearance. The study investigated 9 barren mares with a history of PMIE. During the treatment cycle, whole blood was processed using the Angel cPRP system and the resultant PRP was brought to a final volume with platelet poor plasma and infused into the uterus. All mares were then inseminated with motile sperm.Evaluation of endometrial biopsies showed that in mares … Continue reading
