Britain is losing the war on drugs on an industrial scale, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has said as he called for a reform of drugs laws. The leader of the Liberal Democrats said the Prime Minister needs to show courage over the debate on drugs, after David Cameron ruled out a review into the Government's approach earlier this week. In an interview with the the Sun on Friday, Mr Clegg said: "If you were waging any other war where you have 2,000 fatalities a year, your enemies are making billions in profit, constantly throwing new weapons at you and targeting more young people, you'd have to say you are losing and it's time to do something different. "I'm anti-drugs - it's for that reason I'm pro-reform." He insisted he is not in favour of full legalisation of drugs but thinks targeting dealers and traffickers, while decriminalising possession, might be a solution. The Commons Home Affairs Committee found the Government's drugs policies to be failing in a report published on Monday, and recommended a royal commission to look at alternatives. In the past, pharmaceutical companies could launch a high-priced drug with little push back. But now, there is more pressure from insurers as well as doctors to justify using drugs that provide only incremental benefits. Products that offer clear-cut advances in treatment, however, still command premium prices. The pressure on costs is likely to accelerate. The U.S. Affordable Care Act includes several provisions aimed at improving the value of healthcare, including paying hospitals for the quality of care rather than the quantity. "It's a sign of the times," said Mark Mynhier, partner, healthcare industries advisory at PricewaterhouseCoopers PwC. "We are in fact in a significantly financially challenging environment." Four-fifths of U.S. health insurers recently polled by PwC now require evidence of cost savings or a clear clinical benefit to include new products on their lists of covered drugs. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Young adults at very high risk of psychotic illness should receive talk therapy rather than antipsychotic drugs as an initial treatment, a new study suggests. The results might ease fears about overtreating people who have warning signs of psychosis but not a full-blown disease, but the study findings were not conclusive because the number of participants was too small. "This shows it's quite safe and reasonably effective to offer supportive psychosocial care to these patients," Dr. Patrick McGorry, an author of the study, told Reuters Health. There is "no evidence to suggest that antipsychotic medications are needed in first-line" treatment, he said. The clinical trial included 115 clients of a Melbourne, Australia, clinic for young people deemed to be at "ultra-high risk" for a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia. The study was open to individuals between the ages of 14 and 30 who met at least one of three criteria: having low-level psychotic symptoms, having had previous brief episodes of psychotic symptoms that went away on their own or having a close relative with a psychotic disorder along with low mental functioning during the past year.
