Pharmacy Patients Likely to Suffer from Ninth Circuit Ruling on Provider Reimbursement Cuts, According to the …

Posted: Published on December 14th, 2012

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals today reversed the Courts earlier decision in CMA et al. vs Douglas, which had approved injunctions against reimbursement cuts to providers in Californias Medicaid (Medi-Cal) program. Earlier this year, this court blocked California from implementing 10 percent cuts. The decision by the Ninth District today is devastating news for Medi-Cal patients who rely on providers for access to life-saving medications as well as medical, dental, medical equipment and specialty healthcare services, stated Jon R. Roth, CAE, Chief Executive Officer of the California Pharmacists Association (CPhA). If enacted, Medi-Cal patients will find themselves without a provider because these cuts will drive practitioners out of the system. At a time when the State is moving ahead with transitioning 900,000 children from Healthy Families into Medi-Cal, and enrolling 5-7 million adults into Medi-Cal under the Affordable Care Act, these cuts are completely contrary to good public health policy. CPhA will continue to work with the coalition of other health care providers to assess their options moving forward. For a State that continually talks about wanting to be the healthiest in the Nation, decisions to enact cuts like these are nothing less than shocking, added … Continue reading

LegitScript Shuts Down Rogue Internet Pharmacy "Mothership"

Posted: Published on December 14th, 2012

PORTLAND, Ore., Dec. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Internet pharmacy monitoring and compliance firm LegitScript announced that it shut down myrxcash.com, an Internet pharmacy affiliate marketing portal connected to hundreds of websites identified by drug safety regulators as selling unregulated prescription drugs without a prescription. The firm states that it has shut down or disabled more than 15,000 rogue pharmacy websites in 2012, and about 30,000 since 2009. The website myrxcash.com was identified in an FDA warning letter earlier this year as "offering unapproved and misbranded drugs," by selling prescription drugs without a prescription, and unapproved drugs that had not been approved for safety and efficacy. LegitScript President John Horton stated that myrxcash.com was a key "anchor" website among hundreds in an online pharmacy network commonly known as "MyRxCash" where Internet marketers could download pre-designed online pharmacy templates, and set up multiple Internet pharmacies selling unapproved drugs and prescription-only medicines without a prescription online. According to LegitScript, affiliate marketers would then gain up to 40% commission on each illicit drug sale. "This website was like a proverbial 'mothership' that spawned hundreds of unlicensed, unregulated rogue online pharmacies selling prescription-only medicines to patients, thus putting their health and safety at risk," Horton … Continue reading

AAV1-FS344 is a gene therapy-delivered myostatin inhibitor that increases muscle strength. The program is currently in a Phase I/II trial at Nationwide Children's Hospital in adult patients with Becker muscular dystrophy and inclusion body myositis, a trial funded by the foundation Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy. "The Orphan Drug designation will provide incentives for Milo Biotechnology's continued development of the therapy in rare muscular dystrophies with the greatest medical need," said CEO Al Hawkins. "We hope that our potent muscle strengthening approach will someday augment emerging genetic strategies to transform care for these intractable diseases." Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common inherited myopathy, caused by the absence of dystrophin protein. Becker muscular dystrophy, a less severe form of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, is caused by reduced levels of dystrophin protein. With both types, patients experience progressive muscle weakness, and cardiac and respiratory complications. The Orphan Drug Act (ODA) grants special status for products to treat rare diseases. Orphan designation qualifies the sponsor of the product for a … Continue reading
