Bikies raided: Drugs, guns, cash seized

Posted: Published on November 29th, 2012

Police and customs officers in an early morning raid at Strathpine. Picture: Samantha Healy Source: The Courier-Mail DRUGS, guns and about $100,000 have been seized by police after a crackdown on Outlaw Motor Cycle Gangs. Task Force Hydra closed down an alleged methylamphetamine supply network Thursday morning after they executed search warrants on addresses in southeast Queensland, including two OMCG clubhouses. More than 24 warrants were carried out at homes and businesses as part of the police crackdown on people with links to the Bandidos and Lone Wolf motor cycle gangs, who are allegedly involved in the supply and production of illicit substances. The warrants were executed this morning in Pine Rivers, Caboolture, Burpengary, Sunshine Coast, Brendale and Hervey Bay and led to the discovery of the drugs, money and fifteen guns. Three houses on Buckingham St, Strathpine, were targeted about 5am Thursday. Neighbors described hearing a "thud, thud, thud" and then seeing drug dogs and "police jumping fences". "It's generally a quiet street," a Neighbour said. "But there are always people coming and going from those houses." Acting Detective Superintendent Garry Watts, of the Organised Crime Group, said the operation, known as Juliet Mission, will reduce the impact of … Continue reading

More Drugs Cited As A Risky Mix With Grapefruit

Posted: Published on November 29th, 2012

Grapefruit can make for a tasty addition to breakfast. But it can also interfere with some medications. Grapefruit can make for a tasty addition to breakfast. But it can also interfere with some medications. Grapefruit sprinkled with a little sugar has just the right amount of kick for a morning meal. But when the bitter fruit is mixed with medication, things can get a bit tricky. Compounds in grapefruit can dramatically change how some popular drugs work in the body. And the number of drugs that can have severe side effects when combined with grapefruit has more than doubled in the last four years, says a study published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal. Consuming grapefruit while taking certain drugs can produce an overdose effect. "Taking one tablet with a glass of grapefruit juice is like taking five tablets with water," says David Bailey, a pharmacologist at the Lawson Health Research Institute in London, Ontario. Chemicals called furanocoumarins in grapefruit deactivate an enzyme in the small intestine and liver that breaks down toxins as well as an estimated 50 percent of all drugs. When the enzyme (called 3A4 for short) isn't working right, the drugs hang around longer and … Continue reading

Heart Failure Drugs Put to the Test

Posted: Published on November 29th, 2012

By Randy Dotinga HealthDay Reporter TUESDAY, Nov. 27 (HealthDay News) -- Two new studies examine the effectiveness of medications frequently prescribed for heart failure -- the heart's inability to pump blood properly throughout the body. For the 5.7 million Americans who suffer from heart failure, shortness of breath and edema (excessive water retention) can hinder normal activities. Advances in medication have dramatically changed the lives of some patients, but the question facing cardiologists is: What drugs should they prescribe for this difficult-to-treat condition? "Treatment can be difficult because of low blood pressure or kidney disease," said study lead author Dr. Adrian Hernandez. "Other conditions such as depression make it harder for patients to adhere to their medications." And patients with heart failure "are at high risk for mortality or hospitalization for worsening heart failure," he explained. (About 55,000 die of heart failure each year.) The two studies are published in the Nov. 28 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. One of the new studies looks at the effectiveness of aldosterone antagonists for heart failure patients who have what's called "reduced ejection fraction," which means they have a particularly poor prognosis. Patients with this condition make up about … Continue reading

U.S. price hikes on branded drugs far outpace 2012 inflation

Posted: Published on November 29th, 2012

(Reuters) - U.S. price increases on popular branded drugs in the past year have been more than six times the overall rate of inflation for consumer goods, while spending on specialty medications is up nearly 23 percent, according to data compiled by Express Scripts for its first quarterly drug trend report. The pharmacy benefit manager, whose recent acquisition of rival Medco Health Solutions greatly increased its available data, found that prices on a collection of the most widely used brand name prescription medicines rose 13.3 percent from Sept 2011 to Sept 2012. That easily outpaced the overall economic inflation rate of 2 percent. Somewhat offsetting price hikes of branded drugs was a 21.9 percent drop in prices for generic drugs, helped by the recent entry to the market of generic versions of some of the most popular medicines, such as Pfizer Inc's cholesterol fighter Lipitor and the blood clot preventer Plavix, sold by Bristol-Myers Squibb Co and Sanofi. Those two drugs had been the world's top selling medicines prior to facing generic competition. The generic utilization rate in the United States is now approaching 80 percent. "The big takeaway from this for me is actually not so much that we … Continue reading
