Man Wins Suit Over Sex Addiction

Posted: Published on November 29th, 2012

A French man who claimed a Parkinson's drug turned him into a gambling and gay sex addict has been awarded 197,000 euros in damages, the French Press Agency reported. Didier Jambart, 52, of Nantes, France, sued the pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline in 2011, claiming the drug, Requip, caused him to lose 82,000 euros gambling on the Internet. He said he also became addicted to gay sex and risky sexual encounters. He said he was raped after starting the drug in 2003 and attempted suicide eight times. "It's a great day," Jambart, who was accompanied by his wife during the emotional ruling, told the French Press Agency. "It's been a seven-year battle with our limited means for recognition of the fact that GSK lied to us and shattered our lives." Parkinson's disease destroys neurons deep within the brain that release the "feel-good" neurotransmitter dopamine. Requip belongs to a class of drugs called dopamine agonists that relieve Parkinson's symptoms -- such as shaking, stiffness, slowness and trouble balancing -- by activating dopamine receptors. But the drugs have side effects that, while rare, can be serious. "There are plenty of reports of people developing side effects from Parkinson's drugs, such as hypersexuality, gambling and … Continue reading

United Nations Just Says No to U.S. Legalizing Pot

Posted: Published on November 29th, 2012

After years of waging an international war on drugs, the United States now finds itself facing criticism from the United Nations because two of its states have voted to liberalize their individual narcotics laws. Despite investing millions trying to wipe out marijuana production in countries like Mexico, America is coming under fire for softening its own cultivation policies. Moreover, that policy shift is inspiring pot activists abroad to step up their push for decriminalization. Raymond Yans, president of the U.N.s International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), recently called the votes to decriminalize pot in Colorado and Washington State a great threat to public health and the well-being of society far beyond those states. MORE: Science Says: Lungs Love Weed Hes got a pointat least in the fact that the Colorado and Washington votes are reverberating beyond their borders. Activists in British Columbia, the Canadian province north of the Evergreen State, are taking stock of marijuana decriminalization campaigns south of the border and working to replicate that success. B.C. pot activist Dana Larsen, who leads a group called Sensible BC, recently withdrew a petition to decriminalize pot so he could spend the next 10 months organizing volunteers and gathering support in order … Continue reading

Do pro sports leagues have a new drug problem?

Posted: Published on November 29th, 2012

Because professional sports leagues have made allowances for those who are deemed to be in need of Adderall, and the privacy concerns tied to medical issues, there is a lot of uncertainty about how to react to what seems to be growing use of the drug in some sports. In Major League Baseball, the percentage of players among 40-man rosters who were granted therapeutic use exemptions skyrocketed from 28 in 2006 to 103 in 2007, the year after MLB banned amphetamines like Adderall. That number has remained about the same since. In 2011 it was 105. So roughly 9% of major league players are granted exemptions for drugs treating them for ADHD. By comparison, a study commissioned by the National Institute of Mental Health in 2006 found that 4.4% of adults ages 14 to 44 in the U.S. experienced symptoms of ADHD. "To have doubled the population prevalence of a disorder is staggering," says University of Wisconsin psychiatrist Eric Heiligenstein. "Obviously, that's weird." Ben Vitiello, a research psychiatrist with the NIMH, says that 4.4% figure cited in the 2006 study is probably still accurate, but says it's simplistic to claim baseball's ADHD prevalence is double the general population, because baseball's … Continue reading

Painting Peace: Former Child Soldiers Paint Peace in Liberia – Video

Posted: Published on November 29th, 2012

Painting Peace: Former Child Soldiers Paint Peace in Liberia These young boys were kidnapped, given drugs, and forced to fight in the 14-year civil war. They were compelled to commit the worst atrocities and war crimes known to man. After the war, they were abandoned and rejected. Their generals disappeared, their families rejected them, and society has driven them out. Now, they are homeless and without skills to create a normal life. Painting unlocks their creative intelligence and is the best way for us to better understand what they've experienced. Imagine what their art could reveal about life and the strength of the human spirit! Our hope is that painting will bring peace and hope to former child soldiers and that the money raised will enable more boys to begin healing through art. After all the rejection they've faced, this is our opportunity to accept them and support them in creating something that is truly valuable. This may be their only opportunity to express themselves appropriately and begin mending the emotional and psychological damage that has been done. Please back our project so we can support these boys and share their message through art with the world. Please … Continue reading
