Big profit boost for Pharmacy brands

Posted: Published on November 27th, 2012

Published: 10:03AM Wednesday November 28, 2012 Source: BusinessDesk Source: ONE News Pharmacybrands, the retail pharmacy and medical centre company, lifted first-half profit 52% on little-changed sales with the bottom line bolstered by a full six-month contribution from Radius Pharmacy and Radius Medical, acquired in 2011. Net profit rose to $6.2 million, or 5.11 cents per share, in the six months ended Sept. 30, from $4.1 million, or 3.85 cents, a year earlier, the Auckland-based company said in a statement. Earnings were eroded by a $1.1 million charge from write-downs and acquisition costs, it said. Sales inched up 0.1% to $54.2 million. "In the current six months we have also seen cost savings due to central office consolidation following last year's Radius acquisition," the company said. "The strength of our pharmacy franchise group remains a big focus and we have developed further services to assist franchisee pharmacy revenue growth." Shareholders agreed to a dividend reinvestment plan, which would let them forgo a cash return in favour of receiving more shares, to let majority shareholders Cape Healthcare and LPL Trustee participate without breaching Takeovers Code requirements. Cape Healthcare and LPL Trustee each hold a 30.4% stake in Pharmacybrands and based on the … Continue reading

Bernardi/Kracoff: Compounding Pharmacy – providing cures, treatment and healing worldwide

Posted: Published on November 27th, 2012

The origins of compounding pharmacy coexist with the origins of pharmacy. When people in ancient times developed the first medicines they compounded those medicines. And for all the centuries since, compounding pharmacy has been a fundamental and indispensable part of pharmacy. Most prescription medications are commercially manufactured. But, not all some need to be custom made. This customization is compounding pharmacy. For those of us whose livelihood is compounding pharmacy, and for those who have dedicated so much of our professional lives to this pharmacy discipline, we are deeply saddened and distressed with the meningitis outbreak that is now in 18 states, has taken the lives of 33 and made 480 ill. The meningitis is linked to injections of tainted compounded steroids that were made at New England Compounding Center (NECC) in Framingham. Let us be clear: NECC has absolutely no relationship to our pharmacy, it never has, and surely never will. It is estimated that as many as 14,000 received injections of the contaminated steroid. For several reasons, including that the incubation period for meningitis varies from person to person, it is difficult to forecast how many of those who received the injection will become sick. A. governmental investigation … Continue reading

Two Delhi centres ready to try stem cell therapy on paraplegics

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2012

Ahead of a planned five-centre nationwide trial, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has approved a special project at the AIIMS Trauma Centre in New Delhi where stem cell therapy will be conducted on complete paraplegics and quadriplegics to try and revive limb function. A similar trial will be conducted at the Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC) in Vasant Kunj, south-west Delhi where 21 patients have already been registered. This project too has been approved by the ICMR. Senior ICMR scientists from the apex committee to monitor stem cell research said the five-centre trial will be coordinated from ISIC and is in the final stages of approval. This will be the first national ICMR trial of autologous bone marrow stem cell transplant on complete quadriplegics and paraplegics. We are finalising the number of patients. The ISIC will be the coordinating centre. The next meeting has been scheduled for December 4, a senior scientist said. An autologous stem cell transplantation is a procedure in which stem cells are removed, stored and returned to the same person. For its project, the AIIMS Trauma Centre has registered eight patients. They will be injected with stem cells from their own bone marrow to … Continue reading

November 25, 2012 12:54 Former bassist is said to be still in a "partially conscious state" four years on from car accident. Photo: Tom Oxley/NME Former Deftones bassist Chi Cheng's family are considering stem cell therapy to aid his recovery from a car accident which put him in a coma in 2008. Cheng is said to be in a "partially conscious state" and is unable to speak, although he can move his legs on command. The bassist has been in and out of hospitals over the past four years and only got home to recover in June this year. Now, according to Revolver Magazine, the family is considering alternative therapy in order to speed up Cheng's recovery, as they say the last few months have been a struggle for him. His brother, Ming Cheng, said: "Once his health gets a little better, we'll start looking into other options...but they don't even do it (stem cell therapy) in the US yet. "It's a miracle he's still with us," he added. "He's alive and kicking and he's fighting, and I think there's a reason for it. I'm hoping there's a light at the end of the tunnel for Chi." Deftones released their … Continue reading

Signs of stroke important to know

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2012

Home News Medical Loading Published: 11/26/2012 BY JOHN M. WHAPHAM SPECIAL TO THE BLADE Stroke symptoms can appear the day of or even days before a stroke. One patient reported she was dropping shopping bags, and the next day she overslept which was very out of character for her. She went to her hairdresser in the afternoon and started to drop things again. She staggered on her way to the ladies room, and when she went to leave, her mouth seemed to be twisting and her speech started to slur. She walked to her car and began to drive. She ran over a bolt in the parking lot and her tire completely flattened, forcing her to go back in to the hair salon and called her brother. Her doctor later told her that was the best thing that could have happened, because had she driven home and gone to bed - she may not be alive today. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of adult disability in the U.S., a stroke occurs when there is a sudden loss of blood flow to part of the brain. This is caused by a blockage, rupture, or … Continue reading

Study allows lame dog to walk again

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2012

(CNN)- Jasper, a Dachshund, became lame after an injury in 2008. With the aid of a pioneering treatment, Jasper went from being paralyzed to walking with the aid of a harness. Now, he runs on his own. Scientists at the University of Cambridge took the cells from Jasper's nose and injected them into his damaged spinal cord. Professor Nicolas Jeffery designed the study. "The cells we used, when they are in the nose usually help nerve fibers to grow from the nose into the brain," said Jeffery. Jasper is not the only one moving around the house again. The scientists said other dogs in the study regain limited use of their hind legs. The researchers do acknowledge that this procedure alone would not likely have any useful benefit to human spinal cord injury patients. Jeffrey said he believes it's a small step in the right direction. Copyright CNN 2012. All rights reserved. See original here: Study allows lame dog to walk again … Continue reading

Botox ‘to help Aiden, 3, walk’

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2012

A YOUNG boy with cerebral palsy could walk again thanks to Botox injections. Brave Aiden Farrell, three, cannot move his legs because the muscles have tightened so much. But the painful condition could be eased by the anti-wrinkle jabs, which work by relaxing muscles. Aidens parents Sarah and Gevan faced a 12-month wait to get Botox on the NHS, so appealed to locals who raised more than 7,000 for private treatment. A 12-hour pub pool-athon netted 1,000 alone. Then NHS bosses stepped in after the youngsters condition worsened last month. Now he will have the injections on December 14 and the cash raised will be used for physiotherapy sessions in January. The family home in Gosport, Hants, will also be altered to help Aiden. Mum-of-four Sarah, 31, hopes he could be walking again by Christmas Day. She said: It will be the best present ever. Aiden is such a happy boy and so determined. And she praised the fundraisers, saying: If the treatment works and hes walking again and in less pain, its all thanks to everybody. j.beal@the-sun.co.uk See the original post: Botox ‘to help Aiden, 3, walk’ … Continue reading

Researchers find evidence that brain compensates after traumatic injury

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2012

Public release date: 26-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Kim Newman sciencenews@einstein.yu.edu 718-430-3101 Albert Einstein College of Medicine November 26, 2012 (BRONX, NY) Researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and Montefiore Medical Center have found that a special magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique may be able to predict which patients who have experienced concussions will improve. The results, which were presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), suggest that, in some patients, the brain may change to compensate for the damage caused by the injury. "This finding could lead to strategies for preventing and repairing the damage that accompanies traumatic brain injury," said Michael Lipton, M.D., Ph.D., who led the study and is associate director of the Gruss Magnetic Resonance Research Center at Einstein and medical director of MRI services at Montefiore, the University Hospital and academic medical center for Einstein. Each year, 1.7 million people in the U.S., sustain traumatic brain injuries (TBI), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Concussions and other mild TBIs (or mTBIs) account for at least 75 percent of these injuries. Following a concussion, some patients experience a brief … Continue reading
