Conservative senators kill proposed legislation on MS treatment

Posted: Published on November 24th, 2012

OTTAWAThe Conservatives have used their Senate majority to kill legislation that would have authorized a national strategy to deal with a controversial therapy for multiple sclerosis. Liberal senators say its shameful that Bill S-204 was squelched in committee. This bill is dead, the Conservatives killed it, said Senator Jim Munson. Before we even got to clause by clause in this bill, the Conservative senators shut down the debate. They refused to allow a bill to go to clause by clause and thus go in to the Senate to become law. The Liberals said their Conservative opponents even refused to allow MS patients to testify about the effects of treatment for what is known as chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency or CCSVI. They dont want to hear from MS patients, to have them as witnesses before the committee, said Senator Jane Cordy, sponsor of the bill. This is shameful. The Conservative senators argued this is a matter for science and medicine, not Parliament. Since Day 1, the Conservative have played politics with MS patients, Cordy said. The Conservative senators on that committee threw the science away and have used politics, politics, politics. Cordy says as many as 75,000 Canadians suffer from MS. … Continue reading

Rust in mice may hold key to nerve disease

Posted: Published on November 24th, 2012

A new form of rust discovered by researchers in the hearts of mice may hold the key to the cause of a rare inherited disease in humans that causes progressive damage to the nervous system. Friedreich's ataxia (FA) is a rare condition which can strike children as young as five, and can result in gait disturbance, speech problems, heart disease, diabetes and premature death - and has no treatment. But an international research team, led by scientists from the University of Western Australia, believe a new form of iron may hold a clue which leads to potential relief for sufferers of the fatal disease. In a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, co-authored by Professor Tim St Pierre and Dr Lucia Gutierrez, it reveals the presence of a yet-to-be named new form of iron in the heart of the mice with the disease. "It's a type of rust that isn't an iron oxide," Professor St Pierre said. "An excess of iron where it shouldn't be can cause problems, while iron deficiency also causes problems." The experiments were carried out in the livers and hearts of affected mice at temperatures as low minus 268 degrees Centigrade. Read … Continue reading

coming out as a male to female (mtf) transsexual – Video

Posted: Published on November 24th, 2012

coming out as a male to female (mtf) transsexual Dear Friends, I've debated how I'd say this for quite some time now, when I'd say it, and to whom -- and now I'm at the point where I'm just going to do it. I have been struggling with something my entire life and have finally started addressing it. I am transsexual. My mind does not match my anatomy. Most people don't have to deal with these discrepancies, but I do. This isn't a feeling, a wish, or a choice -- it is something hardwired into me, my gender identity, my innate sense of who I am. This will never go away, and as I've grown older it has only grown worse. It is not something that can be "talked out" or treated with psychoactive drugs and/or therapy (I speak from lengthy experience). My body and mind are simply a mismatch and I am pursuing the only known effective treatment: transition. For the last two and a half months I have been taking female hormones and testosterone blockers. You might've noticed changes in me over that time. I've slimmed down, shown … Continue reading

Research and Markets: Women's Health Therapeutics Market to 2018

Posted: Published on November 24th, 2012

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/44k7cc/womens_health) has announced the addition of the "Women's Health Therapeutics Market to 2018 - Unmet Need for Safe and Effective Treatments due to Unfavorable Risk/Benefit Profile Associated with Hormone Replacement Therapy" report to their offering. Demand Grows for Alternative to Hormone Therapy in Menopausal Women: There is room for improvement in the female health disorders market, and this is fuelling pharmaceutical companies to invest in R&D programs, stated a new report by healthcare experts GBI Research. The new report* states that increased focus is being shown in therapy areas such as menopause, female sexual dysfunction and infertility, as large target markets and unsatisfactory existing treatments make patients a willing target for new treatments. The ageing population is driving the menopause therapeutics market, as menopausal symptoms often emerge after the age of 50, with indications such as hot flashes affecting up to 85% of menopausal women. As the population grows older, the number of postmenopausal women will increase. The menopause therapeutics market is currently dominated by hormone therapies with highly questionable safety profiles. Patients as well as physicians are often reluctant to try hormone therapy as the first line treatment for menopausal symptoms and osteoporosis, as … Continue reading

Dumaguing: Should a woman have hormone replacement therapy?

Posted: Published on November 24th, 2012

FIRST and foremost, this author would like to apologize to our dear readers and friends for the delay of the appearance of this article, which for all the high-tech advantages of computers and gadgets, got lost in transit. At any rate, it is our fervent hope that the delay has not at all, diminished the enthusiasm and interest of our beloved women of menopausal age, including their anxious husbands. Our health columnist-colleague Ms. Sara T. Poumerol says that doctors prescribe HRT for two major reasons; relief of menopausal complaints, in which treatment is given for two to three years and then tapered off; and/or protection against osteoporosis and other long term ailments. Women have a variety of treatments from which to choose. Women who have had hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) together with her two ovaries are often given estrogen therapy. Otherwise, most women use a combination of two hormones (estrogen and progesterone) to counter the negative effect of estrogen on the uterus. Relief of urogental signs and symptoms is also available in estrogen vaginal suppositories, cream and the so-called vaginal ring. Today, doctors and psychologists as well as marriage counselors understand the more complex nature of the maintenance of … Continue reading
