Government delays new stroke drug

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2012

The Federal Government is under pressure to subsidise a blood-thinning drug. Source: Supplied THOUSANDS of patients are at risk of a stroke or heart attack as the Government continues to delay subsidising a new blood-thinning medication its own experts recommended 18 months ago. The $100-a-month treatment Pradaxa can be used by an estimated 100,000 Australian patients who can't or won't use the current treatment Warfarin, which requires regular blood tests and interacts with food and other medicines. The Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee recommended Pradaxa be subsidised in March 2011 but the Government failed to approve the subsidy within the required six months. Instead, it asked the chair of the PBAC to review his own decision in a new inquiry that was meant to report in July this year. The outcome of that inquiry has still not been made public and there are growing concerns the Government is trying to delay subsidising the drug, at a cost of about $250 million a year, so it can balance its Budget. Greens health spokesman Senator Richard Di Natale has expressed concerns about increasing delays in listing drugs once they have been approved by the PBAC. "The PBAC approval process is one of the … Continue reading

PFT: Ditka says he feels good after stroke

AP Bill OBrien, who quit his job as the Patriots offensive coordinator to become the head coach at Penn State this year, is a strong candidate for the national coach of the year award in college football. The Penn State team, which could have fallen apart in the wake of NCAA sanctions for the Jerry Sandusky scandal, has actually played impressive football and compiled a 7-4 record. Unfortunately for Penn State fans, that impressive season has people talking about the possibility that NFL teams could offer head-coaching positions to OBrien. And even more unfortunately for Penn State fans, OBrien is refusing to rule that possibility out. After Penn State beat Indiana today, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reported that OBrien will not commit to being at Penn State in 2013. Instead, OBrien is simply saying that all of his focus is on Penn States season-ending game against Wisconsin. Thats not something that I even think about, OBrien said when asked if hell return in 2013. I think about that Im the head football coach at Penn State. And Im looking forward to getting this team ready for Wisconsin. I mean, we give legs to a story thats not even there. When Jason … Continue reading

Playwright David Freeman brought disability stories to stage

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2012

Canadian playwright and poet David Freeman, who broke new ground by bringing to life stories about people with disabilities, has died. He was 67. Freeman died Wednesday after a long illness, according to a release from Tarragon Theatre. Freeman, who had cerebral palsy, created the play Creeps, based on the limitations of a disabled man working in a shelter. First presented at Factory Theatre in Toronto, it launched the first season at fledgling Tarragon Theatre in 1971. Helmed by founding artistic director Bill Glassco, it was a resounding critical and financial success and helped establish Tarragon as a place to stage Canadian stories, according to the release. In 1973, Freeman won the Floyd S. Chalmers award for a Canadian play for Creeps. His other plays include Battering Ram, in which a professional volunteer offers a young man suffering from cerebral palsy a room in her home, but then involves him in a form of dysfunctional sexual exploitation and You're Going to Be Alright, Jamie- Boy, in which a young man returns to an abusive home after undergoing treatment in a psychiatric hospital. Tarragon presented Battering Ram in 1972 and You're Gonna Be All Right, Jamie-Boy in 1974 and organized a … Continue reading

Liberal MP's anger at vote leak

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2012

NSW Treasurer Mike Baird / Pic: Ella Pellegrini. Source: The Sunday Telegraph LIBERAL MLC Catherine Cusack, who voted to recall Treasurer Mike Baird for a budget grilling, has spoken out against her treatment this week. Ms Cusack was angry the media was told of her vote, which meant Mr Baird would have to face a supplementary budget estimates hearing. Mr Baird has been under fire after an Auditor-General's report found the state budget contained a $1 billion blunder. Ms Cusack said she would refer the leaking of the deliberations to the parliament's privileges committee. Ms Cusack voted for a Labor motion that would shut down all supplementary hearings for the portfolios of Premier, western Sydney, finance, planning and Illawarra, in return for a hearing into the Treasury estimates. She said she was under the impression that fellow Coalition MPs Melinda Pavey and Matthew Mason-Cox would vote the same way. Mr Mason-Cox objected, and Ms Cusack was unable to then rescind her original vote. "It took me by surprise," Ms Cusack said. "I thought it would be a good result for the government if we could shut down supplementary hearings," she said. Continued here: Liberal MP's anger at vote leak … Continue reading

Hormone Therapy Does Not Treat Chronic Prostate Conditions and Erectile Dysfunction Whereas Dr. Allen’s Device Helps …

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2012

A belief that the reduction of testosterone, the main male hormone, causes BPH is not supported by the evidence, as castrated men dont get BPH. Thus, hormonal treatments have shown to be helpless. Fine Treatment highlights that the success of Dr. Allens Device for Prostate Care in cases of BPH comes from its local treatment of the prostate: it improves blood circulation in the affected area that terminated and reverses the process of prostate enlargement. London, UK (PRWEB) November 17, 2012 According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC): Nobody knows the basic cause of BPH. Research shows that testosterone, the male hormone, or dihydrotestosterone, a chemical produced when testosterone breaks down in a man's body, may cause the prostate to keep growing. Another theory is that changes in the ratio of testosterone and estrogen (female hormone) as men age cause the prostate to grow. That is why hormonal treatment for BPH is widely used. Today the hormone therapy is criticised. Dr. Eid's article on Five Myths About Low Testosterone And Testosterone Therapy in the Herald-online, New York, of 7 November 2012, explains: erectile dysfunction (ED) is not a hormone problem, it's a vascular problem; studies have proven that … Continue reading
