Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts in The Rockaways Please donate to the relief effort at http://www.StFrancisRelief.org Photographed by Michael Crook Photography http://www.MichaelCrook.com Music by Messes http://www.MessesMusic.com http November 2011- In the weeks after Hurricane Sandy devastated a huge portion of the eastern seaboard, volunteer and relief efforts quickly began to spring up all over hard-hit areas such as the Rockaways in Queens, NY. Even the likes of Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake showed up to distribute supplies. This video showcases the grassroots efforts of organizations and individual volunteers in the Rockaways who have tirelessly worked to help those in dire need of basic living essentials and supplies. As of now, the majority of homes and apartments in the Rockaways are still without power. From the St. Francis de Sales Relief effort website: "Relief effort coordination and operations for the Rockaway Beach region continue out of the St. Francis de Sales Parish. The community relief center is organized by volunteers who generously donate their time and skills. Hepatitis C treatment's side effects can now be studied in the lab

ScienceDaily (Nov. 16, 2012) The adverse side effects of certain hepatitis C medications can now be replicated and observed in Petri dishes and test tubes, thanks to a research team led by Craig Cameron, the Paul Berg Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Penn State University. "The new method not only will help us to understand the recent failures of hepatitis C antiviral drugs in some patients in clinical trials," said Cameron. "It also could help to identify medications that eliminate all adverse effects." The team's findings, published in the current issue of the journal PLOS Pathogens, may help pave the way toward the development of safer and more-effective treatments for hepatitis C, as well as other pathogens such as SARS and West Nile virus. First author Jamie Arnold, a research associate in Cameron's lab at Penn State, explained that the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which affects over 170,000,000 people worldwide, is the leading cause of liver disease and, although antiviral treatments are effective in many patients, they cause serious side effects in others. 'Rise' in club drug treatment

14 November 2012 Last updated at 07:37 ET The number of people seeking treatment for so-called "club drugs" has risen in the past six years, according to the National Treatment Agency. Last year, 6,486 people were treated for substances such as ecstasy and ketamine - up from 4,656 in 2005-06. But, despite the rise in that period, the last 12 months has seen a fall in those treated for many such drugs. The report refers to those who sought help in a variety of ways, such as counselling and detoxification. The NTA estimates that around one million people used club drugs last year, although overall drug use has declined in England over the past six years. It said club drug users make up just 2% of adults in treatment and 10% of young people in specialist services. Its research suggests that ecstasy remains the most common club drug people receive treatment for. However, the number of new adults entering treatment halved, from around 2,000 in 2005-06 to just over 1,000 last year.
