Florida Hospital Tampa Presents Results for Landmark Clinical Trial Using Stem Cell Therapy on Heart Attack Patients

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

Florida Hospital Tampa is leading the way in clinical research by using stem cells to repair damaged hearts. The results of the clinical trial TIME, show therapy with bone marrow-derived stem cells does not improve short-term recovery after a heart attack. Tampa, Fla. (PRWEB) November 11, 2012 The results mirror a previous, related study called LateTIME. The LateTime study found that cells which come from the patients (called autologous stem cells) given two to three weeks after a heart attack did not improve heart function. Both TIME and LateTime were conducted by the Cardiovascular Cell Therapy Research Network (CCTRN). Florida Hospital Pepin Heart Institute and the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Research Institute are members of the CCTRN. Dr. Charles Lambert, Medical Director of Florida Hospital Pepin Heart Institute, is the sites principal investigator for the trial and co-author of the JAMA article. The findings from the TIME clinical trial will be presented this month at the American Heart Association 2012 Scientific Sessions in Los Angeles and published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). The TIME study was extremely important because it answered the question, will the bone marrow-derived stem cells improve short-term recoveryand the answer is no. … Continue reading

Cryptoglandular Fistula Repair Case Series Using Cytori Cell Therapy Published in the British Medical Journal: Case …

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Cytori Therapeutics (CYTX) announced this morning that a peer-reviewed case series using Cytoris cell therapy to treat patients suffering from complex cryptoglandular fistula has been published in the current issue of the British Medical Journal: Case Reports. The patients were treated by Dr. David Borowski and Dr. Pud Bhaskar, Consultant Surgeons at the University Hospital of North Tees, a National Health Service (NHS) hospital in the United Kingdom. In this case series, three patients suffering from long-standing complex cryptoglandular fistula-in-ano were treated using fat grafts enriched with their own adipose-derived stem and regenerative cells (ADRCs), processed using Cytoris Celution system. The ADRC-enriched graft was injected directly into the tissue surrounding the fistula to close the fistula track. The interior opening of the fistula was closed with a mucosal advancement flap. All three patients remain fully healed at two to three year follow-up, with one patient undergoing colostomy reversal to restore bowel continuity. These three patients are the initial cases treated within a phase I feasibility study; all three had been suffering from the symptoms of their fistulae with considerable reduction in their ability to lead a normal life, said Dr. Borowski. Other treatments had failed, and the … Continue reading

First Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease Patient Receives NiCord® Stem Cell Transplantation in Gamida Cell Pilot Study at …

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

JERUSALEM--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Gamida Cell Ltd., a world leader in stem cell population expansion technologies and stem cell therapy products for transplantation and regenerative medicine, announced today that the first patient, enrolled in its pilot study of NiCord as an investigational treatment for sickle cell disease (SCD), has been transplanted at Duke University in North Carolina. Gamida Cell CEO Dr. Yael Margolin said, The NiCord study is a first step in broadening Gamida Cells pipeline of cell therapies to treat patients who suffer from severe non-malignant diseases with a very large unmet clinical need. SCD is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders where red blood cells become hard and sticky and look like a C-shaped farm tool called a sickle. According to statistics, SCD affects 90,000 to 100,000 in the US alone, mainly African-Americans and Hispanic-Americans. Symptoms range in type and severity. SCD can be fatal and to date, the only cure for SCD is stem cell transplantation from a family related matched donor. Dr. Margolin continued, Sickle cell disease can be cured with a successful bone marrow transplantation, especially from a family related fully matched donor. Most patients do not pursue this option, since they do not have … Continue reading

Expanding Applications to Drive Growth in the Global Nanotechnology Market, According to New Report by Global Industry …

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

GIA announces the release of a comprehensive global report on Nanotechnology markets. Global market for Nanotechnology based products is projected to reach US$3.3 trillion by 2018, primarily driven by the emergence of newer application areas and increase in Government and private sector funding on R&D. Robust application of nanotechnology in regenerative medicine in the healthcare sector also bodes well for the future of the market. San Jose, California (PRWEB) November 12, 2012 The growing prominence of nanotechnology can be put to perspective by the fact that the market managed to stay afloat despite the recessionary pressures cast by the 2007-2009 economic recession. The period witnessed sustained and resilient demand in end-use sectors such as, aerospace & defense and pharma & healthcare, while in other end-use markets like electronics & semiconductors, automotive, chemicals and construction, demand softened. Nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes and ceramic nanoparticles suffered the most, given their widespread use in automotive and construction industries, which were massively impacted by the recession. In the upcoming years, continued fervor of academic research on nanotechnology, especially in the field of medical research and pharmaceuticals will help drive growth. The European debt crisis and the surrounding fears over its playout have until … Continue reading

What Are Stem Cells | Stem Cell Malaysia stemcellmalaysia.com Stem cells are non-differentiated cells with the ability to divide and produce any body cell types. The ability of stem cells to differentiate and self-regenerate impart great possibilities for disease treatment other than for restoring health, beauty and anti-aging. Clinically proven for certain illness and conditions, stem cells can now be introduced into the body to repair and replace damaged organ or tissue. DOH warns against use of stem cells from aborted babies

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2012

By Philip C. Tubeza Philippine Daily Inquirer The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday warned those contemplating stem cell therapy against using stem cells from aborted babies and human embryos. The DOH issued the statement as it reviewed the legal and technical specifications of stem cell therapy to come up with a regulatory framework. The Philippine government will not allow the use of aborted fetuses or human embryos (as sources of stem cells). There is a need to ensure that the biological raw materials are documented and validated and follow infection-free procedures, the health department said. There is also a need to know if the materials to be injected came from animal or human tissues, it added. The DOH said the other fundamental areas of the regulatory framework would include the monitoring of the marketing claims by medical centers that offer stem cell therapy so that the claims stick within the boundaries of science as objectively as possible. Credentials and procedures The credentials of the scientists involved should also match the training, education and skills required for these procedures while good laboratory procedures should be observed in the preparation of the tissue and cells, the DOH said. The centers to … Continue reading
