Kristin Howard, a 56-year-old emergency room doctor at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, was released on her own recognizance following her appearance today in Dedham District Court, where prosecutors asked a judge to hold her on $10000 cash bail on a slew of charges, including driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, causing serious bodily injury and possession of prescription pills. Officers responded to the corner of State and Washington streets at around 8:45 am, Friday, where police say Howard tried leaving the scene of the crash. "Drug Trailer" Teaches Students to Stay Off Drugs

Students at Warren Central High School got a first-hand look at the side effects of drugs Tuesday. Kentucky State Police set-up their Substance Abuse Information Center to show students what different drugs look like, and what they can do to people. The Drug Trailer is an interactive, hands-on learning center on wheels. "Some of the drugs in there, I really never have seen of, or heard of before, so it was really new to me in there," say Raymond Smith, Warren Central Senior. "We think it's important not only for our students, but also for our staff to have an opportunity to see firsthand the different types of drugs, the dangers of drugs, and how important it is to stay away from drugs," says Nancy Booth with the Warren Central Youth Service Center. The Substance Abuse Information Center stops at different schools to teach kids about drugs, so they can stay off drugs. PORTLAND, Ore. - Oregon has the second-lowest rate of antibiotic use in the nation, behind Alaska. But inappropriate antibiotic use, which can lead to drug resistance and adverse side effects, remains a threat, public health officials said Tuesday. Ann Thomas, M.D., medical director for Oregon Health Authority's Alliance Working for Antibiotic Resistance Education (AWARE) program, says the study showing Oregon's low rate is good news. But the state can't rest on its laurels. "Antibiotics are useful medications in treating certain infections, but it's important that they're used only when necessary," Thomas said. "Overuse of antibiotics leads to infections that are difficult to treat." The study was done in 2010 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. As part of its ongoing effort to urge consumers to help reduce inappropriate use of antibiotics, AWARE, funded by the CDC, is taking part in "Get Smart About Antibiotics Week" this week. (WVLT) - East Tennessee Children's Hospital has received national attention since opening its neonatal abstinence unit in 2011 specially designed to care for babies suffering from drug withdrawal. The unit was built to hold 16. But since opening, it's been over capacity. "About 30 percent of our admissions are for NAS. When we opened the 16 bed private room area, we thought this would take care of all of our NAS babies. And that was a year ago, November 7, 2011. And since the day we opened, we haven't had an open bed down here," said nurse Carla Saunders. "We've begun to address that last year with a lot tougher laws on drug abuse as well as meth use, and we're trying to look at what's the next step.
