DOH to regulate stem cell therapy in PH

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2012

Published on 10 November 2012 Hits: 114 Written by Jovee Marie N. Dela Cruz The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday said that it has become necessary to issue regulations for stem cell therapy in the country. Health Secretary Enrique Ona said that guidelines for clinics offering stem cell therapy will be released immediately by the DOH and the Food and Drug Administration. We will issue guidelines because here in the country we dont know where the stem cell offered by clinics come from, he said. According to the DOH, stem cell therapy belongs to the category of advanced cell therapy, which includes biologics and blood. Many countries apply a risk-based approach to assess the quality, efficacy and safety of advanced cell therapy. In many countries, stem cell is considered an investigational intervention, Ona said. The DOH said that stem cell research employs both autologous (from same person) or allogenic (from another organism like an animal or another human cell or tissue sample) method. Ona said that because there are many steps in the preparation of this lab and invasive procedure, there is a need to have a regulatory framework to protect Filipino citizens. UPDATE on Stem Cell Therapy 7 November 2012

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2012

UPDATE on Stem Cell Therapy 7 November 2012 The Department of Health (DOH) saw the necessity to cover regulations for Stem Cell therapy. Stem Cell therapy belongs to the category of Advanced Cell therapy which includes biologics and blood. Many countries around the world apply a risk-based approach to assess the quality, efficacy and safety of advanced cell therapy. In many countries, Stem Cell is considered an investigational intervention. Stem Cell research employs both autologous (from same person) or allogenic (from another organism like animal or another human cell or tissue sample) method. Because there are many steps in the preparation of this lab and invasive procedure, there is therefore need to have a regulatory framework to protect Filipino citizens. Important questions were asked: is there proof of concept in animal trials where stem cell can then be applied in humans? Is there a way to ensure quality and purity of the raw materials? How safe is the procedure? How many did not benefit from the procedure? If this were investigational procedure, how will human subjects be protected? Sec. Enrique Ona convened a consultative working task force to provide recommendations on how to proceed in the early part of the … Continue reading

Dumaguing: How Do You Mend a Broken Heart?

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2012

DEAR readers and friends, the author is not waxing romantic. The annual meeting of the American Heart Association held at the Los Angeles Convention Center on November 3-7, 2013 has very good news, both interesting and reassuring to both physicians and patients alike. Yes sirree, stem cells taken from patients or donors can treat people with enlarged hearts safely and with similar effectiveness. This breakthrough, like a ray of bright California sun, is shared by Dr. Joshua Hare, lead author of the study, "the Comparison of Allogeneic versus Autologous Bone Marrow derived Stem cell Delivered by Transendocardial Injection in Patients with Ischemic cardiomyopathy trial (Poseidon), which is also published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). This cell therapy clearly had some clinical benefits and the mesenchymal stem cells from donors were just as safe as those from the recipient," adds Dr. Hare. "Even in patients who had several attacks in the past decades before treatment, both donor and recipient stem cells reduced the amount of scarring substantially, by 34 percent." The mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs) are unique in the sense that the bodys protective antibodies do not attack them - are found abundantly in the bone marrow of … Continue reading

Study says stem cells — even a stranger's — may repair heart attack damage

A small study suggests that stem cells from a stranger may be as good as a patient's own in undoing the damage after a heart attack has weakened the heart's ability to pump blood. Shutterstock Enlarge photo A small study suggests that stem cells from a stranger may be as good as a patient's own in undoing the damage after a heart attack has weakened the heart's ability to pump blood. The study hints at the possibility that stem cells could be banked, much like blood is banked, to deal with a medical emergency in this case, heart attack. The findings on the study of a kind of stem cell called mesenchymal cells were presented at the annual meeting of the American Heart Association this week and published online in the Journal of the American Medical Association. "We believe the basic message of the study is that this procedure is safe and that future, larger studies are warranted," lead author Dr. Joshua Hare, director of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute at the University of Miami, told reporters at a national briefing. The researchers studied patients following heart-attacked-caused ischemic cardiomyopathy, the most common cause of heart failure. According to the Texas … Continue reading

Doctors to answer questions on epilepsy, seizures

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2012

Nurse practitioner Jody Anderson at Intermountain Medical Center's Epilepsy Clinic in Murray on Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012. Jeffrey D. Allred, Deseret News SALT LAKE CITY It can come without warning, beginning with a feeling of dj vu or even dizziness. It usually ends after 30 to 90 seconds of mind-numbing and sometimes exhausting convulsions, and the victim rarely remembers a thing. A seizure can be a frightening experience for the person having it or for onlookers. There are even statewide laws prohibiting anyone who has seizures within a three-month period from driving or operating heavy machinery. But knowing what to do and learning to manage recurring convulsions can help make life easier and more fulfilling for everyone. "A lot of people are scared," said Dr. Jeffrey Bigelow, a neurologist at Intermountain Medical Center's Epilepsy Clinic. "It's a period of time where they can lose control. They become anxious and nervous to have another one, and they live in the fear of it. "Treating it and not having to deal with the fear can bring back someone's confidence," he said. Bigelow is a trained epileptologist and often visits Haiti and various countries in Africa to offer epilepsy patients there a low-cost … Continue reading

Novel treatment strategies for epilepsy

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2012

Public release date: 9-Nov-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Professor Merab Kokaia merab.kokaia@med.lu.se 46-706-620-899 Lund University A new EU-funded project aims to develop treatments for epilepsy by using viruses to infect brain cells and by transplanting cells into the brain. The project is called EPIXCHANGE and will be carried out at Lund University, Sweden, as a collaboration with Italian, Danish and French researchers. The total budget of the project is almost EUR 1 million. Epilepsy is a devastating neurological disease affecting 50 million people worldwide. Patients with epilepsy run a higher risk of sudden unexpected death. In Sweden some 60 000 people suffer from epilepsy. Around 30-40% of epileptic patients are refractory to currently available pharmacological treatments, which are mostly symptomatic and often have side effects. Therefore there is a great unmet need to develop novel treatment strategies for epilepsy. The new project will explore the development of encapsulated human cell lines producing the neurotransmitter galanin and/or the neuropeptide Y (NPY) and their effect on epileptic seizures in experimental animals. The project will also use viral vectors to deliver neuropeptides and other proteins neurotrophic factors into the brain to suppress seizures. These novel approaches will lay a foundation … Continue reading

Approaches for Children with Autism/Autism Intervention | Anna Dvortcsak, MS, CCC-SLP There are a variety of educational interventions and techniques that are used to improve the outcomes for children with an autism spectrum disorder. Research suggests that there is evidence to support the effectiveness of educational interventions that vary in theoretical framework and implementation. Overlap between the techniques used in educational interventions that vary in theoretical framework has also been reviewed in the literature. The purpose of this presentation is to briefly review and compare the continuum of educational interventions (Behavioral and Developmental) for children with autism. Theoretical framework, defined techniques, and practical implementation of these interventions will be discussed. Treatment approaches that are considered hybrid will be reviewed. The intention of this review is to provide clinicians with basic information on interventions available, some of the components of these interventions, and an overview of the research on intervention techniques. It is not the intention to endorse or refute any of the interventions or to provide training in the implementation of these interventions. There are a variety of interventions for children with autism that claim to be the most effective in improving outcomes for children with autism. This circumstance can … Continue reading
