DOH warns against use of stem cells from aborted babies

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2012

By Philip C. Tubeza Philippine Daily Inquirer The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday warned those contemplating stem cell therapy against using stem cells from aborted babies and human embryos. The DOH issued the statement as it reviewed the legal and technical specifications of stem cell therapy to come up with a regulatory framework. The Philippine government will not allow the use of aborted fetuses or human embryos (as sources of stem cells). There is a need to ensure that the biological raw materials are documented and validated and follow infection-free procedures, the health department said. There is also a need to know if the materials to be injected came from animal or human tissues, it added. The DOH said the other fundamental areas of the regulatory framework would include the monitoring of the marketing claims by medical centers that offer stem cell therapy so that the claims stick within the boundaries of science as objectively as possible. Credentials and procedures The credentials of the scientists involved should also match the training, education and skills required for these procedures while good laboratory procedures should be observed in the preparation of the tissue and cells, the DOH said. The centers to … Continue reading

CTCA and Nanospectra Biosciences announce investigational study of using nanoparticles to kill cancer tumors from the inside out. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (PRWEB) November 09, 2012 This clinical trial for the treatment of advanced lung tumors resulting from either primary lung cancer or metastatic tumors in the lung follows Nanospectra Biosciences ongoing human clinical trials in metastatic head and neck tumors and prostate cancer with the same therapy. Nanospectra, founded in 2002, has the exclusive license from Rice University to 11 issued U.S. patents related to nanoshells and nanoparticles. The trial will be conducted by Dr. Mark Lund and his colleagues in the Interventional Pulmonology department at CTCA. The use of heat to destroy malignant tumors is not new to cancer care, but this technology holds the promise of offering new and exciting treatment options for tumor destruction with minimal collateral damage to adjacent tissue and structures, said Dr. Mark Lund, Director of Interventional Pulmonology, Bronchoscopy and The Advanced Center for Lung and Thoracic Oncology at CTCA. We are excited about participating in this clinical trial and contributing our experiences and treatment results to others to determine the long-term viability of the treatment. The AuroLase Therapy process involves infusing a single dose … Continue reading

Mount Sinai Researchers Present Results of FREEDOM Trial at American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions

Posted: Published on November 10th, 2012

Newswise Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers presented 89 abstracts and plenary sessions at the American Heart Associations (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2012, including the results of the FREEDOM trial, the first long-term study of its kind of individuals who have diabetes and advanced coronary artery disease (CAD). Experts also presented research on education and medication adherence, efficacy of statin therapy in diabetes, and the use of 3D ultrasound to detect plaques in areas of the body other than the heart. The meeting took place November 4-7, 2012 in Los Angeles. Individuals Who Have Diabetes and Advanced Coronary Artery Disease Have Significantly Better Outcomes with Bypass Surgery than Angioplasty: The FREEDOM Trial In the highly anticipated FREEDOM Trial, an international team of researchers led by Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, Director of Mount Sinai Heart, found that people with diabetes and CAD live longer, and are less likely to suffer a non-fatal heart attack, when treated with bypass surgery instead of angioplasty. A total of 1,900 patients were enrolled from 2005 to 2010 at 140 international sites and randomized to undergo PCI/DES or CABG. All patients were prescribed standard medical therapy for coronary artery disease, which is aspirin and a blood thinner. … Continue reading

Options to making smarter medicine

Options to making smarter medicine Nanoparticles could lead to targeted treatment for cancerous tumors reducing side effects The seeds of mutiny reside in every one of our bodies. To counter these potential uprisings, microscopic soldiers are being designed at Clemson to fight on our behalf. We have been waging a war on cancer since President Nixon signed the National Cancer Act in 1971. Despite the four decades and billions of dollars directed at finding a cure, cancer still claimed the lives of 1.6 million people in the U.S. alone last year. As head of Clemsons Nanomedicine Laboratory, Dr. Frank Alexis seeks to provide better cancer treatment options to patients. [Our medicine] works, but in many cases we dont completely know why, Dr. Alexis said. As a result, cancer therapies are not optimized to maximize the patients outcome. Some even exhibit unintended side effects that can harm the patient. His students, both graduate and undergraduate, specialize in building materials on a very small scale. The main workhorses in Dr. Alexis lab are nanoparticles, or small spheres composed of molecular building blocks. These can be loaded with drugs that kill cancer cells. To protect the fields growing reputation, Dr. Alexis advocates an … Continue reading

blood bank | The Development of Umbilical Cord Blood Stem Cell Therapy http://www.cordbloodrecommendation.com Umbilical cord blood is stored immediately after delivery, when the cord is cut. Diseases that are genetically based would most likely be an allogenic transplant. Human umbilical cord blood cells are very rich in stem cells and progenitor cells which make them the perfect place to take cells from and then store them in a cord blood bank or a stem cells bank. Scientists have found that umbilical blood can actually help to treat many types of medical issues. To make a long story short, the Adult Stem Cells did the trick. This would be a significant event, which would save thousands of lives of those waiting for an organ. Why would someone opt for cord blood preservation? Well, research is continually being conducted and cells extracted from this blood has already been used to treat and cure injuries and diseases. Cord Blood Banking facilities are places where you can bank your child's cord blood and use it later on in life to cure life-threatening diseases. The National Cord Blood Program staff at the New York Blood Center performs cord blood collection from the expelled placenta. … Continue reading
