Early Autism Treatment Benefits Kids' Brains

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

By Daniel J. DeNoon WebMD Health News Reviewed by Laura J. Martin, MD Oct. 29, 2012 -- Early, intensive autism treatment improves children's brain development, a new study shows. The treatment, dubbed Early Start Denver Model or ESDM, offers a child 20 hours a week of one-on-one treatment with a trained therapist. It also calls for many more hours of the treatment, in the form of structured play, with a parent trained in the technique. By age 4, children given the treatment had higher IQ scores, more adaptive behavior, better coordination, and a less severe autism diagnosis than kids given the standard autism treatments offered in their communities. But that's not all, researchers Geraldine Dawson, PhD, and colleagues report. "We jump-started and improved the responses of children's brains to social information," says Dawson, professor of psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and chief science officer at Autism Speaks. Normal child development depends on interactions with parents and other people. Without such interactions, language and social skills do not develop. As measured by an electroencephalogram (EEG), small children's brains show a specific pattern of activity when they look at a picture of a human face. This doesn't happen when they … Continue reading

Stroke: It's not just slurred speech and facial drooping: Why feeling cold can be a sign of stroke

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

By Lynne Wallis PUBLISHED: 20:59 EST, 29 October 2012 | UPDATED: 23:27 EST, 29 October 2012 Chris Wheal couldnt work out why he was feeling so cold. The 44-year-old was on a cycling trip in Normandy with friends in November 2010 when he suggested stopping at a coffee shop after just an hour simply because he was freezing. That wasnt his only problem. Less well-known signs of stroke include numbness, blurred or loss of vision in one eye, dizziness and trouble balancing We pulled into a village to go to a cafe and, when I got off my bike, I put my right foot down, but had no sensation in my leg, he says. At the time, I thought it was just pins and needles. 'But when we sat down in the cafe I noticed my right hand was icy cold and numb. 'I could pick up my coffee, but couldnt feel my hand as I lifted it, which felt weird. DNV Healthcare Introduces Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

The Methodist Hospital in Houston Receives the First Certification Cincinnati (PRWEB) October 30, 2012 The DNV Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification encompasses the full spectrum of stroke care diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes. Comprehensive stroke centers are typically the largest and best-equipped hospitals in a given geographical area that can treat any kind of stroke or stroke complication. In a growing number of states, stroke center certifications determine to which facility a patient should be taken for the most appropriate, reimbursable care. In Texas, trauma and EMS teams are required by the Texas Department of State Health Services to transport patients to the nearest certified stroke center to help ensure the best possible treatment based on the severity of the problem. DNV is an accepted certification body within the Texas stroke center designation program, and expects to attain similar status in other states with designation programs. The first hospital in the US to receive DNVs Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification is The Methodist Neurological Institutes Eddy Scurlock Stroke Center, the largest stroke unit in Houstons Texas Medical Center. Accreditation and certification in healthcare provide much more than recognition, says Yehuda Dror, president of DNV Healthcare. … Continue reading

Mother, son hosting fundraiser for spinal cord injury victims

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

Anthony Purcells voice grows strained when he speaks about that February 2010 day that changed his life. Back in Florida visiting cousins, he dove into the water off South Beach and crashed into a sandbar. I thought I was going to die, he recalls. He didnt. A cousin rescued him, but he was left paralyzed, with a broken neck and two bruised vertebrae. He spent six weeks at Jackson Memorial Hospitals intensive care unit, most of it in a medically induced coma. His lungs collapsed 17 times. But he was lucky. He began intense rehabilitation as soon as he was able to, and that has made all the difference. Thats why Purcell, 24, and his mother, Micki, founded Walking with Anthony, a foundation to help others get the same kind of rehab that has helped Purcell progress to where he can stand with the help of a walker and bench press 190 pounds. When I first went into rehab, he says, I was like a noodle. I couldnt even sit up. Walking with Anthony will host its first local fundraising gala Nov. 2 from 7 to 11 p.m. in Hangar 9 at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport. During the event, called … Continue reading
