Injured Cliviger soldier spared jail over raid on aunt's farmhouse 10:00pm Tuesday 30th October 2012 in News AN ex-soldier left with a brain injury after being blown up in Afghanistan was spared jail for a 'premeditated' raid on his aunt and uncle's Rossendale farmhouse, in which he took a 5,500 haul. Ashley Clark lost friends and suffered life-changing injuries as a teenager, when he and comrades were the victims of a roadside bomb in August 2010. He was flown back to hospital in Birmingham for treatment, with his future in the army in tatters. Clark may yet have to have an operation to remove a cyst from over the brain injury, Burnley Crown Court heard. The hearing was told how Clark stole cash and a 5,000 Rolex watch from the Bacup farmhouse home of Mr and Mrs Collin Collier, knowing they kept valuables in a secret drawer in the property. Clark also helped himself to 300 cash from the purse of his aunt, said to have been keeping for a headstone, and 173 in pound coins from a jar, while the family was out celebrating a birthday. Wife, mother and author Lee Woodruff came to McGuire Hall last Tuesday where she told of her husbands, ABC correspondent Bob Woodruff, traumatic brain injury and the struggles and triumphs that followed the dramatic event in her life. He was hit by a roadside bomb in Iraq, five weeks after he had started working a dual-anchor position, where one reporter is in the field and one is in the studio. Lee emphasized that, because he sustained this injury, Bob, being a public figure, was able to become a pulpit to tell people about [brain injuries]. Lee Woodruff explained that what happened to her husband is something that happens to soldiers each day. She said that his type of injury can often be seen as invisible, and that outsiders may not realize the trauma the soldier or bystander may have experienced. Lee often visits military hospitals to show how dedicated she is to those individuals suffering a brain injury from overseas. Lee and Bob had been married for 18 years when the explosion happened. She said, I believe there was a hand of God there that made sure the bomb didnt hit further in. She explained that everyone in the family … Continue reading

SALINE: Despite traumatic brain injury, Jamal Bell thriving artist

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

A life can change in an instant, but that doesn't always mean the change is permanent. Saline resident Jamal Bell sustained a traumatic brain injury in a car accident 16 years ago at the age of 6 that left most of his body immobile, but now, thanks to the therapy team at Special Tree Rehabilitation System, based in Romulus, Bell has become his treatment clinic's resident artist. "As long as I've known him, that's been his gig. He must be a right brain kind of kid," said Joe Richert, Special Tree's director of community rehabilitation services. "He's always had that artistic knack and it was obviously something we included in his treatment. It was his interest, and we were able to foster it through his rehabilitation process." For Bell, the type of art doesn't' matter, as long as he can create. He said his craft helps him relax and take his mind off the physical problems he deals with. "I like working with all different mediums. I don't always use the same thing," he said. "I really like calligraphy pen because you can mess up and it can still come out as a good picture." Special Tree specializes in brain … Continue reading

Bisnar | Chase: New Treatment Can Help Auto Accident Victims and Others Recover from Traumatic Brain Injuries

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

California brain injury lawyer discusses new breakthrough in treatment of traumatic brain injuries, which researchers believe, will help patients recover. According to an Oct. 17 report in the journal ACS Nano, scientists have found this new advancement in their research to be promising. Newport Beach, CA (PRWEB) October 28, 2012 A traumatic brain injury can occur in individuals who suffer a violent blow to the head that causes the brain to collide with the inside of the skull, the report states. The traumatic event may be a car accident, a gunshot wound, an explosion or a football head injury, the article states. Scientists explain the that a brain injury disrupts oxygen-rich blood to the brain. The report states that the brain makes up only 2 percent of a person's weight, but claims about 20 percent of the body's oxygen supply. This is why even a head injury that is considered "mild" such as a concussion can have serious consequences. The ACS Nano article states that the researchers have developed successful lab tests of nanoparticles, which act like antioxidants and quickly restore blood flow to the brain following resuscitation after a brain injury. This research can be of particular significance to … Continue reading

New hope for survivors of stroke and traumatic brain injury

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) A new ground-breaking study about to be published in the Adis journal CNS Drugs provides clinical evidence that, for the first time, chronic neurological dysfunction from stroke or traumatic brain injury can rapidly improve following a single dose of a drug that targets brain inflammation, even years after the stroke or traumatic event. The observational study of 629 patients, conducted over the course of nearly two years, documents a diverse range of positive effects, including statistically significant rapid clinical improvement in motor impairment, spasticity, cognition, etc. in the stroke group, with a similar pattern of improvement seen in the traumatic brain injury (TBI) group. The study involved 617 patients treated an average of 42 months after stroke and 12 patients treated an average of 115 months after TBI, long after further spontaneous meaningful recovery would be expected. The study was conducted at the Institute of Neurological Recovery (INR) in the USA. The drug utilized was etanercept, a therapeutic that selectively binds and neutralizes an inflammatory immune molecule that may remain elevated for years following stroke. Etanercept was administered utilizing a novel delivery method, invented by Edward Tobinick M.D., lead author of the study. "These results represent … Continue reading

MS Breakthrough

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

by Tim Gordon kgw.com Posted on November 1, 2012 at 10:30 PM Updated today at 10:30 PM Portland, OR - OHSU Researchers are celebrating their new discovery, they say stands a good chance of helping people suffering from Multiple Sclerosis and a range of other neurological disorders. They've discovered high levels of a particular enzyme not usually found in the brain, only in those with brain damage due to MS, stroke and conditions. Lead researcher Larry Sherman Ph.D. believes if they can figure out how to block the enzyme, the brain can repair itself, where insulating shields around nerve cells have been damaged or destroyed. "We have a chance now of understanding a whole new process that's preventing repair of the brain. And we have the possibility of finding a drug in the next several years that could repair the brain in MS patients and other patients where this nerve sheath is destroyed,"said Sherman. The next step is to find a drug or combination of medicines that block the enzyme. Researchers will first try to find a successful treatment using Japanese Macaque monkeys at the Oregon National Primate Research Center, affiliated with OHSU. The small percentage of the monkeys have … Continue reading

Sanofi draws fire over cost of MS drug Lemtrada

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2012

PARIS (Reuters) - Medical journal The Lancet warned that Sanofi's experimental multiple sclerosis drug Lemtrada may be too costly for patients and health insurers once it gets approved by regulators. The journal, which published the encouraging results of two late-stage Lemtrada tests on Thursday, also criticized the drugmaker's decision to withdraw leukemia therapy Campath, the same drug given at a different dosage, depriving MS patients who had been using it off-label. In an editorial accompanying the test results, The Lancet voiced concerns that Lemtrada would be priced higher than current MS drugs on the market and said the discontinuation of Campath may mean patients who had used it for MS would not be able to continue their treatment. The injectable drug, chemically known as alemtuzumab, was sold until September 2012 under the name Campath as treatment for leukemia and given more frequently at a higher dosage. "There is concern that with a license for multiple sclerosis, the cost of alemtuzumab could rise and might become too expensive for many patients and health systems," the editorial said. Although Campath remains available free of charge to leukemia patients, Sanofi's rare disease unit Genzyme pulled it off the market in September to prevent … Continue reading

Credit: Wikipedia (public domain) Lawrence LeBlond for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online A new drug to fight multiple sclerosis (MS) is showing promise as one of the most effective treatment options ever produced for the debilitating disease, according to UK researchers. The drug, which is used to reboot a persons immune system, has been shown to be effective in MS patients who have already failed to respond to the first drug with which they were treated, as well as those who have gone previously untreated. The promising results of two phase III clinical trials on the new treatment were published today in the journal The Lancet. The researchers, from the University of Cambridge, said this could have significant implications for the some 100,000 people known to have MS in the United Kingdom. Most people diagnosed with MS have the relapsing-remitting version of the disease, in which symptoms can seem to disappear for a time, before suddenly returning. Now, they believe the drug Alemtuzumab, which is used for the treatment of leukemia, may be a beneficial treatment for MS. In leukemia, the drug controls the excess production of white blood cells. In MS … Continue reading
