Now, cooling caps to save lives of stroke victims

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

London, October 28 (ANI): A new technique that uses special caps to cool the brains of people who have just had a stroke could help reduce deaths and long-term disability, according to experts. And it has been revealed that British doctors are leading a Europe-wide trial, involving 14 countries and 1,500 patients, using the chilled caps to maintain brain function. "This could be one of the biggest breakthroughs in stroke treatment with the potential to save the lives of a huge number of people," the Daily Express quoted study leader Professor Malcolm Macleod of Edinburgh University as saying. A stroke occurs after a clot forms in a blood vessel stopping the supply of oxygenated blood reaching brain cells. Without oxygen, brain cells die and neurological damage occurs. The chilled cap reduces the temperature of the scalp by about four degrees C. This protects brain cells by putting them into a suspended state where the need for oxygen is either cut or removed. The same technique has also been used on newborn babies starved of oxygen at birth and accident victims. "It's rather like the way some animals hibernate. Their bodies close down to just ticking over," explained Professor Macleod. Neurologists … Continue reading

Asia-Pacific Health Experts Call for Urgent Action to Prevent a Stroke Crisis

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

LONDON--(BUSINESSWIRE)-- Asia-Pacific remains at risk of a devastating stroke crisis, according to regional health experts launching two new Reports published today, on World Stroke Day, by Action for Stroke Prevention (ASP). Building on ASPs 2011 Report, How Can We Avoid a Stroke Crisis in the Asia-Pacific Region?, the launch of todays supplementary Reports focus on specific action steps that can be taken by healthcare decisions makers and professional and patient organisations, to reduce the catastrophic personal and economic impact of AF-related stroke. Alarmingly, the Reports highlight the fact that the first time many people will find out they have AF is when they have a stroke. Furthermore, approximately 70% of patients with known AF who had a stroke caused by a blood clot were not receiving anticoagulant therapy to prevent AF-related stroke at the time it occurred.v,vi,vii With stroke placing a huge financial burden on countries in the Asia-Pacific region, more needs to be done to reduce the number of these serious, costly, and yet preventable strokes. Reducing a Preventable Burden: Effecting Change We need to ensure that AF is recognised as a serious risk factor for stroke in national prevention plans and that concrete actions are defined in these … Continue reading

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Europe remains at risk of a devastating stroke crisis, according to a major new Report, How Can We Avoid a Stroke Crisis in Europe? published today, on World Stroke Day, by Action for Stroke Prevention (ASP). Alarmingly, the Report highlights that the first time many people will find out they have AF is when they have a stroke. Furthermore, approximately 70% of patients with known AF who had a stroke caused by a blood clot were not receiving anticoagulant therapy to prevent AF-related stroke at the time. iv v vi With stretched healthcare budgets and the annual cost of stroke in Europe at approximately 64 billion, more needs to be done to reduce the number of these serious, costly, and yet preventable strokes. In addition to their Report, ASP has launched two supplementary Reports for healthcare decision makers and healthcare professionals respectively, that provide concrete action steps that can be taken at a community level to reduce the personal and economic impact of AF-related stroke. Atrial fibrillation is a 'modifiable' risk factor for stroke

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

Public release date: 28-Oct-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: ESC PRESS OFFICE press@escardio.org 0033-492-948-627 European Society of Cardiology Atrial fibrillation, whose prevalence continues to rise, was described last year as the "new epidemic" in cardiovascular disease, even though AF can be successfully controlled by the detection and management of risk factors, by rhythm control treatments, and by the use of antithrombotic therapies.(1) These therapies have been improved in the past few years by the introduction of new anticoagulant drugs, such that AF - like high blood pressure or smoking - may now be considered a "modifiable" risk factor for stroke, whose treatment can reduce the degree of risk. Professor Freek Verheugt, from the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Gasthuis in Amsterdam and speaking on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), says: "All individuals with irregular heart beat should see a doctor, who can diagnose whether this heart rhythm disorder is likely to lead to stroke. If so, blood thinning medication can reduce the risk of stroke by up to 70%." The latest ESC Clinical Practice Guidelines on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, which were revised this year, describe stroke as the "second major cardiovascular disease" (after coronary heart disease) and, … Continue reading

New Report Confirms UK is on the Brink of a Stroke Crisis

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The UK remains at risk of a devastating stroke crisis, according to UK health experts launching Reports published today, on World Stroke Day, by Action for Stroke Prevention (ASP), an alliance of renowned health experts and patient organisations. One of the Reports entitled, How Can We Avoid a Stroke Crisis in Europe?, highlights that the first time many people will find out they have AF is when they suffer a stroke. The major Reports call for policy makers and the medical and patient communities to collectively act to prevent strokes that strike thousands of people with atrial fibrillation (AF) each year. Furthermore, approximately 70% of patients with known AF who had a stroke caused by an AF-related blood clot were not receiving essential anticoagulant therapy at the time.v vi vii With stretched healthcare budgets and the annual cost of stroke in Europe approximately 64 billion, more needs to be done to reduce the number of these life-destroying, costly, and yet preventable strokes. In addition to their main Report, ASP has launched two supplementary Reports. These outline concrete action steps that can be taken at a community level to reduce the personal and economic impact of AF-related stroke. Reducing … Continue reading

Hospital Uses 'Lean' Manufacturing Techniques to Speed Stroke Care

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

Study Highlights: EMBARGOED UNTIL 4 pm ET, Thursday, October 18, 2012 DALLAS, Oct. 18, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A hospital stroke team used auto industry "lean" manufacturing principles to accelerate treatment times, according to new research in the American Heart Association's journal Stroke. In a prospective observational study, the average time between patients arriving at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo., and receiving the clot-busting agent tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), decreased 21 minutes using process improvement techniques adapted from auto manufacturing. Data from more than 200 patients was included in the study analysis, ranging over 3 years. The shorter the time between patients arriving at the hospital and receiving tPA, the greater the chance to reduce brain injury after stroke, researchers said. Using lean techniques, the hospital's stroke team identified unnecessary or inefficient steps such as inefficient patient transportation, tasks performed one at a time rather than simultaneously, and time-consuming traditional lab-based tests. Protocols were formulated to eliminate wasteful steps, keeping only crucial steps that added "value" to patient care, in keeping with auto-manufacturers' lean methods which eliminates inefficiencies in automobile production. The team streamlined the process by having EMS route patients directly to the CT scanner for immediate brain … Continue reading

Stroke Patients Benefit From Carmaker's Efficiency

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

Newswise A process developed to increase efficiency and productivity in Japanese car factories has helped improve stroke treatment at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, report researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. By applying the principles of Toyotas lean manufacturing process, doctors sharply reduced the average time between patient arrival and treatment, known as door-to-needle time, from 58 to 37 minutes. The findings are reported Oct. 18 in the journal Stroke. In an average year, the medical schools physicians treat 1,300 stroke patients at Barnes-Jewish. Beginning stroke treatment earlier can help prevent the brain damage that causes paralysis and loss of speech after a stroke. The researchers say the drop in treatment time results from applying a key component of lean manufacturing to patient care: getting input from all members of the team to identify inefficient steps involved in the process. We sought suggestions from everyone involved, from the paramedics who bring in patients, to admitting clerks, radiology technologists, nurses and physicians, says senior author Jin-Moo Lee, MD, PhD, associate professor of neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and director of the cerebrovascular disease section in the Department of Neurology. Once the inefficient steps were identified, … Continue reading
