The New Statesman: S02E05 - California, Here I Come. "Full Episode" Rik Mayall as Alan B'stard. A extreme right-wing conservative who cares for no one but himself. He use his position as the most popular politician to make his life a bit more easier on the expense of everyone else in England. California Here I Come (February 12, 1989) -- Alan and Piers fly to Hollywood, where they attend a party thrown by a major film producer, to whom Alan intends to pitch the idea of a Dallas-style soap opera set in the House of Commons. Once there, Alan finds that his pitch is rejected by the producer, and Piers accidentally samples some cocaine, which makes him violently, rabidly royalist, but Alan thinks he has saved the night (for him, anyway), when he is propositioned for sex by Donna Nightingale, a sexy soap opera star who proclaims her interest in bondage. Once they get back to her apartment, the two have stripped down to their underwear, and Donna is tied to her bed, she announces that she needs some Quaaludes, which are in her purse out in her car. Alan goes to get them (leaving Donna still tied up), … Continue reading

Drugs uncovered in Fonterra shipment

Posted: Published on November 1st, 2012

Customs is confident a massive haul of drugs uncovered in a shipment of New Zealand powdered milk sent to Algeria was not on board when it left the country. Algerian authorities intercepted 165kg of drugs - believed to be cocaine or heroin - hidden in a container that was imported by ONIL, a nationally owned company that dominates the Algerian dairy market. Agence France-Presse reports the massive haul is one of the largest ever intercepted in the North African country, according to a security official. In a statement to NZ Newswire, Customs said it was unable to verify the reports but was working with Fonterra to establish the facts. Customs' group manager of trade and marine, Paul Campbell, said there was no evidence the drugs were in the container when it left New Zealand. It had passed through two other ports on its way to Algeria, he said. "Fonterra is a trusted trader and is part of Customs' Secure Export Scheme. Containers are sealed when they are packed, and the seal assures that the container has not been breached until it is loaded onto a ship," he said. The cargo was later unloaded and reloaded in Panama and Valencia, Spain. … Continue reading

Supreme Court hints at limits on dog sniffs for drugs

Posted: Published on November 1st, 2012

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - While considering whether a police dog should be allowed to sniff outside a home for illegal drugs inside, some U.S. Supreme Court justices smelled a rat. At their Wednesday session, justices from across the ideological spectrum signaled that the privacy interest of a person in his home was too great to give police a broad license to let trained canines sniff around a home for evidence they could not see. But in a second case involving a sniffer dog, some of the justices indicated they were hesitant to set too high a bar on police to show that their dogs are reliable. The nine-member court has often allowed dog searches, including of luggage at airports and cars at checkpoints. On Wednesday it addressed Florida's appeals of two decisions by the state's highest court that found the detection of drugs by trained police dogs violated the ban on unreasonable searches and seizures under the U.S. Constitution's Fourth Amendment. The first case focused on the location of the search, on the doorstep of a home, while the second was focused on whether the dog in question was sufficiently reliable. REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS OF PRIVACY In the first case, police let … Continue reading

Targeting Drugs with Hydrogels

Posted: Published on November 1st, 2012

Tsukuba, Japan, Nov 1, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - Better control over the delivery of drugs to specific sites in the body at specific times would reduce unwanted side effects and improve medical treatment dramatically. 'Smart' polymers are promising materials for controlling drug delivery, since they change their properties in response to specific stimuli. However, they usually require continuous stimulation to maintain these changes. Now, researchers led by Takao Aoyagi at the MANA, National Institute for Materials Science, Japan, have developed an approach that could allow more subtle control and timing of drug delivery. The new technique uses hydrogels, which are a type of 'smart' polymer made of water-soluble long-chain molecules. The team first showed that they could control the acidity inside a hydrogel by loading it with a compound called o-NBA. This releases protons, which increases acidity, when irradiated with UV light. When o-NBA-loaded hydrogel was irradiated, acidity increased inside; if only part of the gel was irradiated, acidity throughout increased gradually as protons diffused. Aoyagi and his colleagues then loaded hydrogel with o-NBA and L-DOPA, a precursor of the brain chemical dopamine that is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The change of acidity in the gel … Continue reading
