Older people in Sierra Leone face ‘ticking time bomb’ of health issues – study – University of Birmingham

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2020

Skip to main content Blood pressure screening in Freetown, Sierra Leone (Steven Douglas Rubin) Three-quarters of people over-40 in Sierra Leone have at least one health factor that could contribute to cardiovascular disease creating a ticking time bomb of death and disability in one of the worlds poorest countries, a new study reveals. Researchers found that cardiovascular disease risk factors (CVDRFs) such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity are much more common in Sierra Leone than expected, whilst access to health care for these conditions is low. The experts also warn that older people with such multi-morbidity are more likely to contract COVID-19, making getting on top of these conditions useful in reducing the impact of current and future pandemics Continue reading

Health Benefits of Calorie Restriction Linked with Reduced Body Temperature – Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2020

Studies in mice led by scientists at the Scripps Research Institute have tied some of the biological effects of calorie restriction (CR)which is known for its life-extending effects in animalsto metabolic molecules that are affected by changes in body temperature. The discovery helps to explain some of the elusive science behind the health benefits of calorie restriction, and indicates that targeting metabolic pathways could potentially mimic the effects of CR in humans. Continue reading

Metabolic adaptation to calorie restriction – Science

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2020

Rewired into hypothermia by deprivation Calorie restriction extends health span, which is thought to be mediated in part through a decrease in core body temperature. Guijas et al. compared metabolomics data from mice subjected to calorie restriction and that were housed at a temperature lower than body temperature or at thermoneutrality, reasoning that thermoneutrality would offset the metabolic changes induced by calorie restriction. Continue reading

Brain circuit linking stress, insomnia and the immune system discovered – New Atlas

Posted: Published on September 11th, 2020

A new study, led by neuroscientists from Stanford University, has homed in on the specific brain circuit responsible for stress-induced insomnia. The research suggests this same circuit is responsible for stress-related immune system dysfunction, pointing to a close relationship between stress, insomnia and weakened immunity Continue reading
