Jeff Schloss: Sequencing the human genome to promote health and understand disease – Video

Jeff Schloss: Sequencing the human genome to promote health and understand disease spie.org - the worlds largest biophotonics conference, SPIE BiOS at Photonics West As the costs come down, researchers will be able to learn about the correlations between genome sequences and health. In 2004, the National Human Genome Research Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, launched an ambitious program of research to reduce the cost of sequencing the human genome -- all of the DNA in the nucleus of the cells in our bodies -- from $10 million to about $1000. Lopping 4 zeros off of the cost of a process requires tremendous creativity and risk-taking. Research supported by NHGRI, performed in academic and industry labs, is being complemented by the substantial investment that enables aggressive research and commercialization programs by a number of companies. The outcome has been a remarkable reduction in the cost of sequencing and explosion in the availability, in databases, of tens of thousands of human genome sequences, enabling research to understand the contribution of changes in genome sequence to a variety of diseases that take such a toll on the human population. These low-cost sequencing methods are also being used to understand … Continue reading

Genetic Immunity Publishes the Technology Roadmap for the Cure of HIV

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY--(Marketwire - Oct 22, 2012) - Genetic Immunity ( OTCBB : PWRV ), a leader in immunotherapy technology, announced the peer-reviewed publication on the Company's groundbreaking nanotechnology and details on its potential for the cure of HIV. The manuscript is entitled "Nanomedicine applications Towards the Cure of HIV" by J. Lisziewicz and E. R. Toke (http://www.nanomedjournal.com/article/S1549-9634(12)00287-0/abstract). The Scientists of Genetic Immunity pioneered research for the cure of HIV: in 1999 they described in the New England Journal of Medicine the first patients whose immune system was boosted to control HIV after interruption of his daily drug treatment (http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM199905273402114). This observation inspired development of a new medicine called DermaVir that boosts the immune system to specifically recognize and kill HIV infected cells. Today, DermaVir is the most advanced nanomedicine developed for the cure of HIV. "We have about 30 potent HIV drugs suppressing viral load, but we do not have any to eliminate the infected cells from the reservoirs. To cure HIV we need new drugs to activate these infected cells and to kill them. In our manuscript we described the new drugs that are needed and the strategy that will result in the cure of HIV. One of these … Continue reading

The fact that my arthritis is gone, Im very, very happy and Im thankful to Bobby [Kittichaiwong, Villa Medica CEO). And its just a two-shot on my back, gone instantly. You know, yung quality of life mo na hindi ka aray-aray-aray? Tapos nagpunta ako sa Germany last June and its such a beautiful place. We even had meron ka pang tour sa Paris [France]. Very nice place, sabi ni Mother Ricky. DOH warns public vs stem cell therapies

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2012

By Philip C. Tubeza Philippine Daily Inquirer Health Secretary Enrique Ona MANILA, PhilippinesHealth Secretary Enrique Ona on Friday warned the public against stem cell therapies, which are becoming popular here and abroad. Ona said stem cell therapies were still under clinical evaluation and study and the public should particularly avoid therapies that use embryonic stem cells, those from aborted fetuses, and genetically-altered and animal fresh cells. While research has shown that adult stem cells and umbilical cord stem cells are the safest and most ethical, the public is warned that claims of preventive and curative benefits of stem cell therapy are still on their investigative stage, Ona said in a statement. Thus, the Department of Health (DOH) advises the public to be cautious with stem cell therapies being promoted in the media or through word of mouth. DOH will soon issue guidelines for the use of stem cell therapy and the process of licensing facilities offering such services, he added. Ona said the Philippine Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the DOH were drafting standards and regulations to ensure public safety and address ethical concerns regarding the use of stem cells in research and medicine. He noted that there was … Continue reading

Using stem cells to regenerate cartilage

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2012

A team of Malaysian doctors achieved success and gained international attention by being innovative, passionate and a little bit crazy. ON a quiet weekend in 2011, hand surgeon Dr Ranjit Singh Gill flexed his fingers as he watched a limousine and police outriders pull up to the front entrance of the Kuala Lumpur Sports Medicine Centre (KLSMC). A middle-aged man emerged from the car flanked by bodyguards. Dr Ranjit Singh greeted his patient. The whole group crowded into an elevator which took them to the fifth floor where a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine awaited. The bodyguards stood sentry outside. My arm has been bothering me, the patient told Dr Ranjit Singh. After he gently flexed his patients arm and studied the MRI scans, he suggested that the patient undergo keyhole surgery and five rounds of stem cell injections. These stem cells would repair the injured area and regenerate the cartilage tissue. The treatment was so simple, it was almost too good to be true. In fact, global experts in the field of orthopaedics are divided over the use of adult stem cells to repair cartilage. Cartilage basically does not heal, Dr Hubert Kim, director of the Cartilage Repair and … Continue reading

Nobel Prize-Winner’s Stem Cells Help Glaxo Pinpoint Risks

Posted: Published on October 23rd, 2012

GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) is applying Shinya Yamanakas Nobel Prize-winning discovery in stem cells to identify heart risks linked to experimental drugs earlier in the development process. Yamanaka was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine this month for his work in turning ordinary skin cells into induced pluripotent stem, or iPS, cells with the potential to become any cell in the body. That breakthrough has enabled the London-based drugmaker to study iPS cells transformed into heart-muscle cells that may be used to test compounds for cardiovascular safety, said Jason Gardner, head of Glaxos early-stage regenerative medicine research. About half of all experimental drugs fail for safety reasons, and half of those failures are due to toxic effects on the heart, Gardner said. Finding that risk even before animal testing could potentially save drugmakers millions of dollars in clinical-trial costs and better protect patients, he said. I call this a low-risk, must-do approach to stem cells, Gardner said in an interview in Upper Providence, Pennsylvania, where Glaxo has been building on research using iPS cells that began in the U.K. in 2010. Its on the verge of being used now for decision-making. Other applications include using the test, also called an assay, … Continue reading
