Meningitis outbreak: Massachusetts pharmacy founder had background in recycling

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2012

BOSTONThe pharmacy linked to the nation's deadly outbreak of meningitis is owned by two brothers-in-law who brought different but complementary skills to the venture: One's a pharmacist, the other a risk-taking businessman who made his mark recycling old computers, fishing rope and mattresses. Now the New England Compounding Center and its practices are under scrutiny as investigators try to determine how a steroid solution supplied by the pharmacy apparently became contaminated with a fungus. The drug has sickened more than 180 people in 12 states, killing 14. Most of the patients had received spinal injections of the steroid for back pain. NECC was founded in 1998 by Barry Cadden and Gregory Conigliaro as a compounding pharmacy, a laboratory that custom-mixes solution, creams and other medicines in dosages and forms that often are unavailable from pharmaceutical companies. Cadden, who is married to Conigliaro's sister, Lisa, had the medical know-how behind NECC, earning a pharmacy degree from the University of Rhode Island. In a 2002 newsletter, he wrote that compounding had rebounded, after falling off when pharmaceutical companies began manufacturing drugs in the 1950s and '60s, and could help patients with painful conditions that demand "novel approaches." Cadden, 45, backed his belief … Continue reading

NASCAR and the Anatomy of a Concussion

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2012

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head that can change the way your brain normally works. After the original blow, the brain then hits the skull in a counterblow that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. In more severe cases, often as the result of twisting the neck during the blow, pressure is put on the brain stem. This is particularly worrisome, as the brain stem is where all basic involuntary life functions are controlled, including heart rate, breathing, sleeping and eating. Bleeding or other damage may occur. Often, people who sustain a concussion cannot remember the events surrounding the blow. Symptoms of a concussion include: drowsiness, difficulty waking up or similar changes, headaches, loss of consciousness, memory loss (amnesia) of events immediately before or after the injury, nausea and vomiting, seeing flashing lights or even feeling like you have "lost time." Sometimes, the symptoms may even be severe enough to require immediate medical attention. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), patients should seek immediate medical care if there are: … Continue reading

Stem-cell transplant claims debunked

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2012

Hisashi Moriguchi presented his work at the New York Stem Cell Foundation meeting this week. AP/Press Association From the beginning, it seemed too good to be true. Days after Kyoto University biologist Shinya Yamanaka won a Nobel prize for his 2006 discovery of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells (see 'Cell rewind wins medicine Nobel'), Hisashi Moriguchi a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo claimed to have modified that technology to treat a person with terminal heart failure. Eight months after surgical treatment in February, said a front-page splash in the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun yesterday, the patient was healthy. But after being alerted to the story by Nature, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), where Moriguchi claimed to have done the work, denied that the procedure had taken place. No clinical trials related to Dr Moriguchi's work have been approved by institutional review boards at either Harvard University or MGH, wrote David Cameron, a spokesman for Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. The work he is reporting was not done at MGH, says Ryan Donovan, a public-affairs official at MGH, also in Boston. A video clip posted online by the Nippon News Network and subsequently removed showed … Continue reading

Bay Area stem cell researchers see encouraging results

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Bay Area stem cell researchers are reporting early, encouraging results from two clinical trials. The first, involves patients, paralyzed with spinal cord injuries and a treatment that could offer new hope for their future. Nearly 20 years after the football injury that left him paralyzed, Roman Reed still holds onto the hope that he will someday walk again. "One hundred percent, without a doubt. I've been wrong about the date, but not the fact I will walk again," said Reed. Reed now runs a foundation to promote stem cell research and has been closely watching a clinical trial being conducted by Bay Area based Stem Cells Inc. Its goal is to use stem cell therapy to restore motor function in patients with spinal cord injuries. "We're on the road on to being able to cure paralysis, it's so important, and stem cells are the way to do it," said Reed. Stephen Huhn, M.D., Ph.D., from Stem Cells Inc., says the test procedure began a two hour surgery to clear a path to the spinal cord. Researchers then injected the cells directly into the damaged area. "So the first three patients in the trial were designed to … Continue reading

QualityStocks News – Power of the Dream Ventures Subsidiary Partners with German Cancer Research Center to Tackle HPV …

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2012

Collaboration will initiate preclinical research aimed at developing a treatment for Human Papilloma Virus after infection has occurred Scottsdale, Arizona (PRWEB) October 13, 2012 In the companys news yesterday, Genetic Immunity, a wholly owned subsidiary of Power of the Dream Ventures, has inked an agreement with DKFZ (German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg, Germany) to develop a DNA-based vaccine for the treatment of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection that causes cervical and other cancers. The companies are addressing a gap in the market between vaccines such as Cervarix and Gardasil, which have no therapeutic effect on HPV-related diseases, and the need for a product to treat diseases or conditions caused by HPV. There is a huge unmet medical need for such cancer vaccine, because vaccines we have developed earlier do not provide protection against cancer when used for treatment of existing conditions caused by HPV. Our goal is to provide protection against cancer for patients after the onset of sexual activity, after they might be exposed to HPV, Dr. Julianna Lisziewicz, CEO of Genetic Immunity stated in the press release. The Division of Genome Modifications and Carcinogenesis will commence a preclinical research program to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of the DKFZs … Continue reading

OxyContin Maker Works to Combat Prescription Drug Abuse and Diversion

Posted: Published on October 13th, 2012

The company that manufactures OxyContin is using a variety of ways to combat the abuse and diversion of prescription drugs. Purdue Pharma is monitoring drug counterfeiting and Internet distribution, analyzing pharmacy robberies and thefts, tracking the drug supply chain, and using unique tablet markings, phillyBurbs.com reports. Experts from the company and the FBI came to Pennsylvania this week to train law enforcement officers on preventing and responding to prescription drug abuse and diversion. Our goal is to keep prescription drugs out of the hands of criminals and people who abuse and traffic them and we try to make sure that legitimate patients have access to them, said Landon Gibbs, Director of Law Enforcement Liaison and Education at Purdue. The company uses data from RxPATROL, an information clearinghouse for data related to pharmacy robberies, burglaries and thefts involving controlled substances. The system collects, analyzes and disseminates pharmacy theft information to law enforcement across the country. Purdue also evaluates products seized by law enforcement, to determine if they are genuine or counterfeit. This information helps police find and prosecute drug counterfeiters, and those who divert drugs, the article notes. The company uses special markings, called indicia, to help law enforcement figure out … Continue reading
