Pradaxa Bleeding Side Effects Outweigh its Benefits, According to New Blood Thinner Study

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

New York, New York (PRWEB) October 06, 2012 A new study is adding to concern that Pradaxa side effects may be putting patients at risk for serious, uncontrollable and life-threatening bleeding, Bernstein Liebhard LLP reports. The study, which appears in the journal, Archives of Internal Medicine, found that the rate of serious Pradaxa side effects negates any benefits the drugs may offer to patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS).* This study only reinforces that Pradaxa side effects are extremely serious, especially given the fact that there is no readily available antidote for severe Pradaxa bleeding, says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a national law firm representing clients who have been injured by dangerous drugs and defective medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free and confidential lawsuit evaluations to individuals who suffered serious Pradaxa side effects. The Archives of Internal Medicine study looked at data on 30,000 ACS patients, half of whom were treated with Pradaxa or another class of new blood thinners called xa inhibitors, while the other half were given placebos. According to the study, taking Pradaxa or one of the new blood thinners increased the likelihood of a serious bleeding event by 3-fold. However, only modest reductions of stent … Continue reading

Compounding pharmacy oversight is questioned

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

Compounding pharmacies started as small mom-and-pop stores that mixed hard-to-find medications for local doctors and their patients who had allergies, difficulty swallowing, or otherwise could not take mass-produced drugs. But amid growing drug shortages in the pharmaceutical industry, some large compounders such as the New England Compounding Center stepped in and expanded their business far beyond the industrys homespun roots. The Framingham company, whose products are implicated in a nationwide outbreak of fungal meningitis that sickened more people Friday, listed dozens of products online and apparently took thousands of orders from doctors, clinics, and hospitals in at least 23 states, a transformation that regulators have not kept pace with, critics and even some industry executives said. A question still has to be answered: Who the heck at the government level was asleep at the switch? said David G. Miller, executive vice president of the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists. The outbreak starkly illustrates the yawning gap in oversight, said Allen Vaida, executive vice president of the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, a Pennsylvania-based advocacy and research organization. The US Food and Drug Administration is supposed to regulate compounding companies that ship their products to many providers, a practice known as … Continue reading

Genes behind Parkinson's disease identified

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

Washington, October 6 (ANI): Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) investigators have conducted the first genome-wide evaluation of genetic variants associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). The study points to the involvement of specific genes and alterations in their expression as influencing the risk for developing PD. Jeanne Latourelle, DSc, assistant professor of neurology at BUSM, served as the study's lead author and Richard H. Myers, PhD, professor of neurology at BUSM, served as the study's principal investigator and senior author. A recent paper by the PD Genome Wide Association Study Consortium (PDGC) confirmed that an increased risk for PD was seen in individuals with genetic variants in or near the genes SNCA, MAPT, GAK/DGKQ, HLA and RIT2, but the mechanism behind the increased risk was not determined. "One possible effect of the variants would be to change the manner in which a gene is expressed in the brains, leading to increased risk of PD," said Latourelle. To investigate the theory, the researchers examined the relationship between PD-associated genetic variants and levels of gene expression in brain samples from the frontal cortex of 26 samples with known PD and 24 neurologically healthy control samples. Gene expression was determined using a microarray … Continue reading

He's 15. He has cerebral palsy. He runs — far.

Matthew Taylor, a 15-year-old from Florida who has cerebral palsy, runs in St. Paul on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012, in preparation for running 10 miles on Sunday as part of a Medtronic Global Heroes program. Taylor is one of 25 athletes who'll be participating in races this weekend. (Pioneer Press: Jean Pieri) Cerebral palsy can make movement tough for a kid. But the condition won't stop Matthew Taylor from competing in the Medtronic TC 10-Mile race this weekend. In fact, it's a key part of the reason the 15-year-old Florida boy was making his first visit to Minnesota on Friday, Oct. 5. Taylor is one of 25 athletes competing in either the 10-miler or marathon Sunday as part of a Medtronic program that annually sponsors athletes who run with medical devices. The Fridley-based company makes an implanted drug pump that delivers medication to Taylor's spine that treats muscle spasticity due to cerebral palsy. The disc-shaped pump measures 3.4 inches in diameter and is less than an inch thick. "It felt like my muscles would get tighter and tighter as I walked, moved or did anything else," Taylor said of life before he received the implant in 2010. After the surgery, … Continue reading

Neurons Made From Adult Cells In The Brain

Much of the stem cell research that is going on into making new brain cells focuses on using stem and adult cells from other parts of the body and reprogramming them to form new brain cells and then implanting them into the brain. For example, earlier this year, Stanford researchers in the US reported how they converted mouse skin cells directly into neural precursor cells, the cells that go on to form the three main types of cell in the brain and nervous system. But corresponding author of this latest study, Benedikt Berninger, now at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, says they are looking at ways of making new neurons out of cells that are already in the brain. "The ultimate goal we have in mind is that this may one day enable us to induce such conversion within the brain itself and thus … Continue reading
