Officials seek ways to curb prostitution

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2012

WORCESTER Since 2007, police have made nearly 1,000 arrests for prostitution-related offenses, but that alone has not been enough to eradicate the problem, especially in the citys Main South area. In fact, things have reached the point in which the City Council recently gave City Manager Michael V. OBrien the go-ahead to file special legislation that would authorize the forfeiture of motor vehicles used in connection with prostitution in the city. Meanwhile, District 4 Councilor Sarai Rivera wants the city to tackle prostitution with the same kind of fervor it has with panhandling. She said the city needs to look at prostitution as more than just a public safety issue; she contends it is very much a public health issue as well. Ms. Rivera said the large number of people continuing to get caught through police stings shows prostitution is still a big problem in Worcester. In response to the councils desire to see more done about chronic prostitution, Mr. OBrien said the citys Division of Public Health will soon begin researching possible long-term solutions to the health consequences of prostitution drug dependency and abuse, violence and sexually transmitted diseases. He said those policy recommendations and strategies will be coordinated … Continue reading

Drugs Reportedly Triggered Johnny Lewis Psychosis Break

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2012

10/01/2012 . (TMZ) Johnny Lewis was a good guy whose life changed forever earlier this year -- after a very bad experience with drugs ... sources close to Lewis' family tell TMZ. We're told the "Sons of Anarchy" star was "mentally healthy" -- until an episode early this year, when he dabbled with an undisclosed drug. Our sources say the incident triggered a "psychotic break" and he never recovered from it. Family sources tell us ... after the episode Johnny changed dramatically -- he became mentally unstable and began to "self-medicate" to deal with the problem. The family says doctors told them Johnny's condition was classified as "co-occurring disorders." Translation -- by abusing drugs to treat the mental condition, Johnny was simultaneously troubled on 2 fronts. As for the nature of the mental disorder -- family sources say they were never able to get Johnny stable enough to get a clear diagnosis. As for the landlady's murder -- they do not believe it was triggered by a drug-fueled rage. We're told doctors had given Johnny medicine to stabilize his condition and when he was taking it he seemed fine, but when he got out of jail 6 days before the … Continue reading

Companies fight against cheap Indian drugs

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2012

There are fears that India's poorest could lose access to vital medicines if big drug companies succeed in curbing the country's generic medications industry. Several pharmaceutical giants are using India's courts in an attempt to block the production of key generic drugs used by cancer sufferers and those with HIV. Generic Indian drugs cost a fraction of the price of the equivalent products. Essentially, the drugs are local copies of those originally produced by international pharmaceutical companies. The availability of cheap generic anti-retro viral drugs that prevent HIV being passed from mothers to their children is what has stopped the disease from reaching full-blown epidemic levels in India. Anjali Gopalan, who heads India's NAZ foundation, which is committed to raising awareness about HIV, says the drugs are the difference between life and death. "At some level we've been able to arrest the spread of the infection, but suddenly we are seeing high prevalence districts crop up all over the country," she said. "Without these cheap anti-retro drugs it is sure death for our people. Without them this infection is going to go viral. Without these drugs people are going to die horrible deaths." As well as HIV, generic drugs are … Continue reading

Three pharmacy robberies reported within two hours Sunday in Bangor, Brewer

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2012

BANGOR, Maine Robberies were reported at three pharmacies in greater Bangor within a two-hour span Sunday afternoon, and one man was arrested. Emergency calls to police were placed from Rite Aid pharmacies in Bangor and Brewer within minutes of each other, and the pharmacy at the Hannaford grocery store on Union Street in Bangor was targeted a little over an hour later. Police have not said if anything was taken from any of the three pharmacies, but one person Jeffrey Macy, 46, of Eastbrook was arrested by Bangor officers in connection with that communitys Rite Aid incident, and police continued to search Sunday night for at least one other suspect. The similarities between the descriptions of the Bangor Hannaford suspect and the Brewer suspect have led officers to consider that both crimes were committed by the same man, Brewer police Deputy Chief Jason Moffitt said Sunday night. Were actively looking at that possibility, the Brewer officer said. Brewer responded to a robbery call from the Rite Aid on Wilson Street at about 3:45 p.m. The best description we have is a white male, 5 foot, 6 inches tall with an average build in his 30s, wearing a blue hooded jacket … Continue reading

Deadly complication of stem cell transplants reduced in mice

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) Studying leukemia in mice, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have reduced a life-threatening complication of stem cell transplants, the only curative treatment when leukemia returns. About 50 percent of leukemia patients who receive stem cells from another person develop graft-versus-host disease, a condition where donor immune cells attack the patient's own body. The main organs affected are the skin, liver and gut. Now, the scientists have shown they can redirect donor immune cells away from these vital organs. Steering immune cells away from healthy tissue also leaves more of them available for their intended purpose -- killing cancer cells. "This is the first example of reducing graft-versus-host disease not by killing the T- cells, but simply by altering how they circulate and traffic," says John F. DiPersio, MD, PhD, the Virginia E. and Sam J. Golman Professor of Medicine. "Donor T-cells do good things in terms of eliminating the recipient's leukemia, but they can also attack normal tissues leading to death in a number of patients. The goal is to minimize graft-versus-host disease, while maintaining the therapeutic graft-versus-leukemia effect." The study is now available online in Blood. Working with mice, Jaebok … Continue reading
