Don't Over Analyze, This Stock is Too Cheap

By Lee Samaha - October 4, 2012 | Tickers: CVS, ESRX, PRGO, WMT, WAG | 0 Comments Lee is a member of The Motley Fool Blog Network -- entries represent the personal opinions of our bloggers and are not formally edited. Sometimes as investors we can over-analyze and spend so much time looking at fine details that we miss the bigger picture. I think this is exactly what many are doing with Walgreen (NYSE: WAG). Every investor is trying to analyze how many of the lost customers Walgreen will regain from the Express Scripts (NASDAQ: ESRX) debacle, but does a debate over the marginal amount really matter when the stock is so cheap? I dont think it does. Time to Confess OK, I admit it: I am one of the guilty parties. I hold a position in CVS Caremark (NYSE: CVS), and quite frankly I think Walgreen will find it difficult to win back lost customers from the likes of CVS and Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT). I even articulated this view in a previous article. Investors should understand that whole industries are structured around the reason why Walgreen will find it hard to win customers back. Customer inertia is a very … Continue reading

Gross and Embarrassing

Yakman: DGigil King is like listening to a drunk uncle make a sexist joke. Its awkward and uncomfortable, and no one really enjoys it except the uncle. Though the film is ostensibly a comedy, its hard to find the humor in a bunch of older men basically pawing at younger women. There have been a lot of movies in the last few years with lurid content, and yet none of them feel as gross or as exploitative that this movie. Its really a sad state of affairs. 50 year-old Yakie (Leo Martinez) doesn't have any problem attracting the attention of the ladies. But he's never been able to take advantage of his charm, because he's got a bit of a problem: premature ejaculation. It's so bad that even just the sight of a comely young lady can set him off. His problem comes to fore as he becomes the target of the affections of several young ladies. He wants to get closer to them, but his condition keeps him from letting them in. His old friend Maximo (Soxie Topacio) shows up, and tries to help find a remedy for his malady. The movie feels unbelievably long. The runtime is actually … Continue reading

Japan team offers fertility hope with stem cell eggs

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

Hopes of a cure for infertility in humans were raised Friday after Japanese stem cell researchers announced they had created viable eggs using normal cells from adult mice. The breakthrough raises the possibility that women who are unable to produce eggs naturally could have them created in a test tube from their own cells and then planted back into their body. A team at Kyoto University harvested stem cells from mice and altered a number of genes to create cells very similar to the primordial germ cells that generate sperm in men and oocytes -- or eggs -- in women. They then nurtured these with cells that would become ovaries and transplanted the mixture into living mice, where the cells matured into fully-grown oocytes. They extracted the matured oocytes, fertilised them in vitro -- in a test tube -- and implanted them into surrogate mother mice. The resulting mice pups were born healthy and were even able to reproduce once they matured. Writing in the US journal Science, which published the findings, research leader professor Michinori Saito said the work provided a promising basis for hope in reproductive medicine. "Our system serves as a robust foundation to investigate and further … Continue reading

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - The RCMP and the Canadian Border Service Agency are issuing that warning as police try to crack on the sale of fake drugs, which can be deadly. Sergeant Duncan Pound says since late September 2,000 packages were seized in Canada alone, along with 140,000 fake pills. "Among the counterfeit and illicit medicines, were anti-depressants, sedatives, prescription weight loss products, heart medications, hormone replacement therapies and erectile dysfunction drugs." CBSA Officer Mark Yee unscrewed an audio-video selector that raised suspicion at their Vancouver International Mail Centre. "[Inside was] three bags. The first one I opened contained a white powder. It could be Viagra, it could be steroids." Border guards seized thousands of these kinds of packages during a worldwide crackdown on the online sale and distribution of fake medications in late September. The CBSA'S Heather Ardiel is chief of the Mail Centre. "Taking prescription medications without proper medical advice may pose serious health risks, and in some cases, even be fatal." Pound says a 58-year-old BC man has been arrested, linked to the sale of fake drugs like Viagra through a website. He was caught with 6,000 counterfeit erectile dysfunction medications and they've recommended charges to Crown counsel. … Continue reading

Pradaxa Lawsuits Investigated By Bernstein Liebhard LLP

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

Pradaxa lawsuits filed by patients who experienced severe side effects such as excessive bleeding are currently being evaluated by the Pradaxa lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP. New York, NY (PRWEB) October 04, 2012 Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing clients who have been injured by dangerous drugs and defective medical devices, is currently offering free and confidential Pradaxa case reviews to individuals who suffered Pradaxa side effects. The Pradaxa lawsuits allege that the manufacturer of the drug failed to adequately warn patients about Pradaxa excessive bleeding and the lack of an antidote. FDA Receives Growing Reports Of Fatal Pradaxa Side Effects Pradaxa was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2010. The drug was introduced as an alternative to Coumadin, or warfarin, an anti-coagulant that required more monitoring to use. However, serious bleeding caused by warfarin can be stopped by doses of Vitamin K, while Pradaxa lacks such a solution to stop its blood-thinning effects, which may lead to serious patient injuries and death. According to a USA Today report, the FDA has received 3,781 adverse event reports of Pradaxa side effects and 542 Pradaxa deaths since its approval. The number of Pradaxa adverse repots … Continue reading

Will recession mean a new generation of addicts?

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

The research, from the NHS's National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA), showed that, overall, the number of people seeking treatment for drug addiction is declining - in line with government figures for wider drug use. However, the one age group that is increasingly seeking treatment is the over-40s. Nearly 62,000 people over 40 are currently receiving treatment for drug addiction in the UK, compared with 58,617 the year before. The over-40s age group is the only one which has seen an increase of people in treatment in the last year, and has the number is almost double that amount in treatment in 2005/2006. It is also leading to an increasing number of deaths in the age range - with 802 dying from drug misuse in 2011 compared to 504 in 2001. The 18-24 age group has seen those in treatment decline from 32,948 in 2005/2006 to 21,290 in 2011/2012. Heroin is the most prolific drug being treated in the over-40s category, followed by combined heroin and crack addiction. Fifty five per cent of over-40s being treated for drug dependency are addicted to heroin, the survey found, with another 32 per cent addicted to a combination of heroin and crack. … Continue reading

Counterfeit prescription drugs coming into Colorado

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

DENVER - Fake drugs are coming into Colorado from all over the world. Those are the findings of investigators with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). "We have a number of ongoing investigations," said Kumar Kibble, Special Agent in charge of ICE-HSI in Denver. ICE-HSI, in partnership with the Department of Justice, seized 686 websites that were illegally selling counterfeit medications. Project "Bitter Pill" is part of a global law enforcement operation known as "Pangea V." According to an ICE press release, "Pangea is an annual operation aimed at disrupting the organized crime networks behind the illicit online sale of fake drugs. Worldwide, preliminary results show Pangea has accounted for 79 arrests and the seizure of 3.7 million doses of potentially life-threatening counterfeit medicines worth an estimated value of $10.5 million. Additionally, approximately 18,000 websites engaged in illegal sale of counterfeit drugs were taken down." Kibble says those sites will sell counterfeit drugs to anyone, even people without a prescription. "Their money is going to fund an organized criminal network that is then using those proceeds to continue to push fake and potentially harmful drugs around the world," Kibble said. A quick Google search will pop up … Continue reading

DRUGS IN DEDHAM: Police fighting back but overwhelmed

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

Editors Note: This is the first article in a three-part series on drug addiction in Dedham. Other articles in this series will tackle the personal stories and town response. In 2012 alone, Dedham Police responded to three fatal drug overdoses. Drug addiction is also responsible for countless robberies in town, according to Dedham Police detectives Robert Walsh and Kevin Mahoney. They deal with the lions share of the departments drug cases. Drug use is probably one of the bigger issues facing Dedham, Walsh said recently in his office on High Street. But Ill also say this: its no bigger a problem here than it is anywhere else. Police are working to control the problem, but Walsh and Mahoney said they are getting overwhelmed. The need for drugs and the money to buy them drives people to shoplift, steal from family members and break into cars and homes. Finding a way to reverse the trend toward addiction could go a long way toward improving life in town, they said. The primary cause of the widespread problem is the explosive growth of opiate pain medications pills like Percocet and OxyContin which contain habit-forming active ingredients, according to a recent statewide drug report. … Continue reading

Latin American nations push UN to drop zero tolerance on drugs

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

The world has watched the crescendoing pushback, coming mostly from Latin America, against the United States-dominated "war on drugs" for the past three years with incredulity as the drug policy debate continues to mark new firsts. First, in 2009, it was former presidents from Latin America who declared the war on drugs was an outright failure (they were later joined by officials and business leaders from around the globe communicating a similar message). Then, sitting presidents from across the region began to speak out, urging the US to rethink policies that they say have only contributed to more violence and mayhem in Latin America. This spring they pushed the topic onto the agenda for the summit of the Organization of American States (OAS), which for the first time agreed to study alternative drug policies. And then Uruguay proposed a state-regulated legal marijuana market that would be the first of its kind. But now, Colombia, Guatemala, and Mexico hardly liberal bastions have taken the matter a step further. The Latin American countries, each threatened by drug violence, sent a clearly worded declaration to the United Nations, inviting member states to undertake a consultation process to come up with more effective drug … Continue reading
