Nanodevice delivers drugs in hard-to-reach places

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

A new type of controlled-release drug-delivery vehicle made from nanostructured polymer membranes has been unveiled by researchers at the University of California at San Francisco in the US. The device, which releases its therapeutic payload slowly and continuously over a period of several months, could come in useful for a wide variety of drug-delivery applications in the body including in difficult-to-access areas like the back of the eye and limb joints. One of the most important applications of nanomedicine is drug delivery using tiny drug-carrying vehicles. Such vehicles are normally made of hollow nanoparticles in which therapeutic molecules can easily be transported. However, nanostructured membranes in which the drug is loaded between a nanofilm and a backing layer also show promise. The advantage of the membrane option is that drug molecules around the same size as the membrane pores (which can range from tens of nanometres to hundreds of nanometres across) can be released slowly thanks to the fact that they travel through the pores in a single file. Until now, most such nanostructured membranes have been made from inorganic materials, such as silicon, alumina or titania because they are relatively easy to fabricate. However, the problem is that these … Continue reading

Japan team offers fertility hope with stem cell eggs

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

Hopes of a cure for infertility in humans were raised Friday after Japanese stem cell researchers announced they had created viable eggs using normal cells from adult mice. The breakthrough raises the possibility that women who are unable to produce eggs naturally could have them created in a test tube from their own cells and then planted back into their body. A team at Kyoto University harvested stem cells from mice and altered a number of genes to create cells very similar to the primordial germ cells that generate sperm in men and oocytes -- or eggs -- in women. They then nurtured these with cells that would become ovaries and transplanted the mixture into living mice, where the cells matured into fully-grown oocytes. They extracted the matured oocytes, fertilised them in vitro -- in a test tube -- and implanted them into surrogate mother mice. The resulting mice pups were born healthy and were even able to reproduce once they matured. Writing in the US journal Science, which published the findings, research leader professor Michinori Saito said the work provided a promising basis for hope in reproductive medicine. "Our system serves as a robust foundation to investigate and further … Continue reading

Baby Mice Born from Eggs Made from Stem Cells

Mouse pups from induced pluripotent stem cell-derived eggs; image courtesy of Katsuhiko Hayashi Stem cells have been coaxed into creating everything from liver cells to beating heart tissue. Recently, these versatile cells were even used to make fertile mouse sperm, suggesting that stem cell technology might eventually be able to play a role in the treatment of human infertility. Now two types of stem cells have been turned into viable mouse egg cells that were fertilized and eventually yielded healthy baby mice. Details of this achievement were published online October 4 in Science. Mouse oocytes; image courtesy of Katsuhiko Hayashi Katsuhiko Hayashi, of Kyoto Universitys School of Medicine, were able to create the eggs with embryonic stem cells as well as with induced pluripotent stem cells (formed from adult cells). The team started with female embryonic stem cells and then coaxed them genetically to revert to an earlier developmental stage (primordial germ cell-like cells). These cells were blended with gonadal somatic cells, important in the development of sexual differentiation, to create reconstituted ovaries. The researchers then transplanted these cultured assemblages into female mice (in either the actual ovary or the kidney) for safekeeping and to allow the stem cells to … Continue reading

Male Impotence Specialist Advanced Male Medical Center Offers Tips on Sexual Activity and Diabetes

Posted: Published on October 4th, 2012

San Francisco's Advanced Male Medical Center is offering tips on potential erectile dysfunction treatments for diabetic males. San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 04, 2012 What is the relationship between sex and diabetes? Is there any reason for a diabetic man to reduce his level of sexual activity? Larry Stephens of Advanced Male Medical Center said. There is no reason for a man with diabetes to reduce his level of sexual activity. However, there are complications of diabetes that may hinder a man's ability to have and sustain an erection. If a man has damage to the small blood vessels or the nerves involved in achieving an erection, the flow of blood into the penis may be impaired, preventing him from achieving or sustaining an erection. Advanced Male Medical Center recommends the following: 1)Diabetics who are experiencing any sexual dysfunction should discuss it with their doctor, who can evaluate testosterone levels, medications and blood sugar control. 2)The erectile dysfunction may be a side effect of some blood pressure medications. 3)Quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes may have an impact on the blood vessels. 4)Consider treatments such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis and other medications that may be used to treat erectile dysfunction. "There … Continue reading

Working Past 65? Don't Overlook the Financial Side Effects

Posted: Published on October 4th, 2012

Working past the traditional retirement age of 65 is the fallback strategy for many people hurtling toward retirement but concerned they haven't saved enough. And indeed, the financial benefits of deferring retirement can be potent. Continuing to work means continuing to save, for one thing, and even more important, deferring withdrawals from your investment kitty also reduces the number of years you'll need your investments to last. Working longer also often means deferring Social Security, which itself delivers a sizable inflation-adjusted compounding benefit. But continuing to work past the traditional retirement age--or even part time during retirement--can bring unintended financial side effects, some good, some bad. These issues should, of course, play second fiddle to the key factors surrounding whether to continue to work: whether you want to, whether you're able to, and whether continuing to earn a paycheck will have a meaningful effect on your bottom line. That said, here are some of the secondary financial issues to bear in mind as you assess the merits of working past 65. Social Security BenefitsFirst, the good news. If you've waited until your full retirement age or later to file for Social Security benefits, you can earn as much income as … Continue reading
