Pfizer Says Sutent Will Remain the Standard for Cancer

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2012

Pfizer Inc. (PFE) said its Sutent pill will continue to be the standard treatment for renal cell carcinoma after GlaxoSmithKline Plc (GSK) said its competing Votrient drug showed similar effectiveness with fewer side effects. Patients taking Sutent survived an average of 9.5 months without the disease progressing, compared with 8.4 months for those on Votrient, in a study of 1,100 patients, London-based Glaxo said yesterday. Side effects such as fatigue and skin sores occurred with less frequency for Votrient. One of the studys authors yesterday suggested new patients may now view Votrient more favorably than Sutent, which commands about half the U.S. market for renal cancer treatments since gaining approval in 2006 for Pfizer, the worlds largest drugmaker. Still, physicians and patients have experience using Sutent and have learned to manage the side effects, said Robin Wiltshire, head of global medical affairs for New York-based Pfizers drug. Im confident that Sutent will remain the standard of care, Wiltshire said in a phone interview from Vienna after attending the European Society for Medical Oncologys annual meeting. Over time, physicians and their patients have really learned good strategies for helping to manage the therapy. Severity of side effects can be reduced through … Continue reading

Martin Paul Bean III of Boca Raton, Florida is facing federal charges for selling more than $7 million worth of misbranded and unapproved oncology drugs through a San Diego pharmacy, the Latin American Herald Tribune reports. Bean was indicted last week on 35 charges of wire fraud, mail fraud, selling unapproved and misbranded drugs, illegal importation, and money laundering. He faces the forfeiture of $7 million in proceeds from the scheme, a Jaguar automobile, and up to 131 years in prison. The scheme involved the importation of drugs from India, Turkey, and Pakistan. Customers called into a center in Winnipeg, Canada, where doctors submitted orders for the drugs by phone, fax, or e-mail. The orders were then filled and mailed with an invoice from a local wholesale pharmacy to mislead the purchasing physicians into believing the drugs were approved for use in the United States. This investigation uncovered a very serious public health threat and should serve as a warning to those who put consumers at risk for their own financial gain, Derek Benner, special agent in charge for Homeland Security Investigations in San Diego, told the Herald Tribune. Homeland Security was joined in the multiagency investigation by the Food … Continue reading

Drugs named after LeBron?

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2012

Via The Victory Formation: Why no love for Moses Malone or Dr. J? A Philadelphia drug-dealer was busted over the weekend for allegedly selling 140 bags of dope, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. The name imprinted on the bag? Miami Heat superstar forward, LeBron James. It is unknown just how popular LeBron James brownstone was selling in the Philly area, but police say Marlon Guess, 19, attempted to sell about $105K worth of it in one shot. I have to say, not a very bright move on his part. As a result, his bail to be sprung is set at $250K. Upper Darby Police Superintendent, Michael Chitwood, had the great Captain Obvious line following the arrest: I dont think LeBron James would be too happy with this drug-dealer dude using his name on these street bags. Gee, ya think? For what it is worth, this is commonplace within the drug-selling business. Often times, drugs will be nicknamed after celebrities or places, as a way to market the drug without getting detection from authorities. Of course, this usually comes to an end when you actually attempt to sell to the authorities like this genius. H/T Philly.com More The Victory Formation Go … Continue reading

Drugs in Search of a Disease Pharma Targets Women

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2012

Last week I focused on drug advertisement for Low T catching up with all the attention given to menopausal women with declining hormones. But women still are the primary targets for pharmaceutical advertising, in part because they can be captured for multiple productsif not quite from the cradle, at least from puberty, through pregnancy, to menopause and to grave. What are some of the consequences of this relentless focus on womens hormones and common symptoms? For one, it seems to promote a nation of hypochondriacs. It is extremely profitable for pharmaceutical companies, but it is not so good for the target of this attention, women. For example, for the younger set, we have a new illness, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). In my day, it was moodiness at that time of the month, more typically known as bitchiness. We didnt have an ICD-9 or DSM code. We had uncomfortable days but knew that this, too, would pass. Now cyclical hormones are a disease. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, revision four, made the diagnosis official, although an example of a depressive disorder not otherwise specified. It is said to affect 3-8% of reproductive age women. Not everyone agrees that … Continue reading

Common heart drugs may be less helpful than thought

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2012

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The cheap and popular heart drugs known as beta-blockers may be overused in many patients, exposing them needlessly to bothersome side effects, a new study suggests. Researchers found that people with stable heart disease who took beta-blockers were no less likely to die from their condition, or to suffer a heart attack or stroke, than were those not on the medications. Although the study is not conclusive, it "is definitely going to make some waves," said Dr. Lydia Bazzano of Tulane University in New Orleans, who studies heart disease prevention, but wasn't part of the new work. "I think there are probably plenty of people out there who are getting (beta-blockers), but don't need them," Bazzano told Reuters Health. Beta-blockers such as atenolol and metoprolol slow the heartbeat and lower blood pressure. They are known to shield against future heart attacks in people who just had one and can be helpful in certain types of heart failure. Older studies have suggested staying on beta-blockers in the long run may be beneficial, so many doctors have their patients take the drugs indefinitely. But those results predate modern treatment, researchers say. And whether or not beta-blockers can … Continue reading
