Deadly complication of stem cell transplants reduced in mice

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) Studying leukemia in mice, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have reduced a life-threatening complication of stem cell transplants, the only curative treatment when leukemia returns. About 50 percent of leukemia patients who receive stem cells from another person develop graft-versus-host disease, a condition where donor immune cells attack the patient's own body. The main organs affected are the skin, liver and gut. Now, the scientists have shown they can redirect donor immune cells away from these vital organs. Steering immune cells away from healthy tissue also leaves more of them available for their intended purpose -- killing cancer cells. "This is the first example of reducing graft-versus-host disease not by killing the T- cells, but simply by altering how they circulate and traffic," says John F. DiPersio, MD, PhD, the Virginia E. and Sam J. Golman Professor of Medicine. "Donor T-cells do good things in terms of eliminating the recipient's leukemia, but they can also attack normal tissues leading to death in a number of patients. The goal is to minimize graft-versus-host disease, while maintaining the therapeutic graft-versus-leukemia effect." The study is now available online in Blood. Working with mice, Jaebok … Continue reading

Far-reaching accomplishments in the biotechnology sector meet its most ambitious expectations, stem cell therapy. The birth of this new industry has boosted the enthusiasm and energy of investors and has brought unprecedented capability and optimistic predictions. New developments in regenerative medicine are bringing about exciting, novel approaches to create therapies for hard to treat diseases. The biotechnology industry has been soaring in 2012 as companies both large and small have shown impressive growth. The cell therapy space has seen relatively small companies making strides in the right direction with increased government support. Osiris Therapeutics (NASDAQ: OSIR) a leading stem cell company is currently the only company with an approved cell therapy. The approval is more of a first step in a long walk for Osiris. Reuters reported that shares of Osiris Therapeutics rose 15% on May 30, 2012, after U.S. health regulators said the stem cell technology company's wound treatment was eligible for reimbursement when used in hospitals in out-patient settings … Continue reading

Results of Some Natural BPH Treatments Are Uncertain While Dr. Allen’s Device Can Help to Protect from Prostate Gland …

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

A new article in Oman Daily, Observer states that homoeopathy may be able to treat enlarged prostate but it is unclear how it is achieved, whereas Dr. Allens device is designed with a clear purpose to terminate prostate enlargement by improving blood circulation in the affected prostate tissue that protects men from erectile dysfunction after BPH surgeries and other prostate removal procedures, states Fine Treatment. London, UK (PRWEB) September 25, 2012 In this article, Dr. N. Karnalkar says: The treatment is started with proven homoeopathic remedies, and in a few weeks time the symptoms start improving. Hypertrophy of prostate, prostatitis, chronic infections of urinary tract, low libido are successfully treated. He also adds, Medical therapy failure and urinary retention are the main causes for surgical intervention. While homoeopathic remedies may be generally harmless and bring some symptomatic improvement, their efficacy is unreliable, and the long-term results are sadly highly uncertain as they do not address the ultimate causes of prostate problems. The Thermobalancing therapy, on the other side, works to relieve BPH symptoms to the point of no medical urgency for a surgery. The therapy with Dr. Allens device for prostate care gradually cleanses the prostate gland by improving the … Continue reading

India's cheap drugs under threat

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

India's cheap drugs under threat By Martin Khor GENEVA - India is famous for the Taj Mahal, its religious ceremonies, Bollywood films and in recent years one of the world's highest economic growth rates in recent years. Less famously but no less important, the country has had a positive global impact through its supply of vast quantities of low-cost, good-quality generic medicines, which have saved or prolonged millions of lives. A decade ago, Indian pharmaceutical company Cipla produced generic HIV/AIDS drugs that could treat a patient for US$300 a year, against the branded product's cost of $10,000 per patient a year. Today the Indian generic version is even cheaper, below $80. This has enabled millions more AIDS patients to be treated, since India supplies 70% of the HIV/AIDS drugs obtained by the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF), the Global Fund and the William J Clinton Foundation for developing countries. A further 75-80% of medicines (not only for AIDS) distributed by the International Dispensary Association to developing countries come from India. No wonder India has been termed the pharmacy of the developing world. In January 2012, the Indian Drug Manufacturers' Association (IDMA), comprising 700 drug-manufacturing companies, celebrated its 50th anniversary by … Continue reading

FDA warns public on risks of online pharmacies

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

The Food and Drug Administration is warning U.S. consumers that the vast majority of Internet pharmacies are fraudulent and likely are selling counterfeit drugs that could harm them. The agency on Friday launched a national campaign, called BeSafeRx, to alert the public to the danger, amid evidence that more people are shopping for their medicine online, looking for savings and convenience. Instead, theyre likely to get fake drugs that are contaminated, are past their expiration date or contain no active ingredient, the wrong amount of active ingredient or even toxic substances such as arsenic and rat poison. They could sicken or kill people, cause them to develop a resistance to their real medicine, cause new side effects or trigger harmful interactions with other medications being taken. Our goal is to increase awareness, FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told The Associated Press, not to scare people away from online pharmacies. We want them to use appropriate pharmacies. That means pharmacies that are located in the U.S., are licensed by the pharmacy board in the patients state and have a licensed pharmacist available to answer questions. In addition, the pharmacy must require a valid doctors prescription for the medicine. Online drugstores that … Continue reading
