Far-reaching accomplishments in the biotechnology sector meet its most ambitious expectations, stem cell therapy. The birth of this new industry has boosted the enthusiasm and energy of investors and has brought unprecedented capability and optimistic predictions. New developments in regenerative medicine are bringing about exciting, novel approaches to create therapies for hard to treat diseases. The biotechnology industry has been soaring in 2012 as companies both large and small have shown impressive growth. The cell therapy space has seen relatively small companies making strides in the right direction with increased government support. Osiris Therapeutics (NASDAQ: OSIR) a leading stem cell company is currently the only company with an approved cell therapy. The approval is more of a first step in a long walk for Osiris. Reuters reported that shares of Osiris Therapeutics rose 15% on May 30, 2012, after U.S. health regulators said the stem cell technology company's wound treatment was eligible for reimbursement when used in hospitals in out-patient settings … Continue reading

Hopes stem cell therapy can help diabetes sufferers

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

Scientists are hoping recent developments in the usage of stem cell therapy to treat common health problems can be transferred to diabetes. Researchers from the University of Adelaides Robinson Institute say stem cells harvested from bone marrow have been shown to work magic when injected into inflamed joints. These cells can convert themselves into a cartridge and give relief to the joint, Professor Andrew Zannattino told 7News. Stem cells have also been proven to do a similar thing to other bones, even those damaged by severe injury or cancer. These cells start stimulating the blood vessels to come into those sites and they can form bone itself, Professor Stan Gronthos said. A trial on heart attack patients has also delivered promising results. The heart muscle actually becomes re-oxygenated with new blood so it actually repairs the heart, Professor Grontos said. They say the next step is seeing if stem cell therapy has an effect on diabetes. It is hoped stem cells will eventually be able to be administered with a simple needle or intravenously, and researchers are hoping a therapy will be readily available in hospitals within five years. Mesenchymal Stem Cell (MSC) Product Market Fastest Growing Area of Stem Cell Research

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) September 30, 2012 Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types, including osteoblasts, chondrocytes, myocytes, adipocytes, beta-pancreatic islets cells, and even neural cells. MSCs are of intense therapeutic interest because they represent a population of cells with the potential to treat a wide range of acute and degenerative diseases and are immuno-privileged, which makes them an advantageous cell type for allogenic transplantation. In the market research report Mesenchymal Stem Cells Advances & Applications, trend analysis of grant activity, publications, and patent applications reveals that global research activity involving MSCs increased by 112% from 2009 to 2010, and by 116% from 2010 to 2011. This rate accelerated throughout 2011, positioning mesenchymal stem cells as the fastest growing area of stem cell research for 2012. While competitors are guessing, this report divulges exactly where to focus R&D and marketing spend to create the most profitable MSC research products. A key element of this report is survey findings from a large population of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) researchers that reveals: It is also important for bio-pharmaceutical and pharma companies interested in MSC therapy applications to understand underlying market forces, and in … Continue reading

Massel: More guidance, community forums needed on autism

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

Your greatest fear, if you are the parent of an adult child with a disability, is that you will not outlive your offspring and leave them to a world where they are not protected, cared for and loved. As The Star's series on autism showed, many families struggle as their autistic young people work to make that transition. Despite some good intentions, the state of California and insurance companies are frightening the parents of adult children with autism. In 2011, the Legislature passed SB 946, making our state one of the few that require health insurers to cover treatment for adults with autism. Autism remains a truly confounding condition and there is much to be learned about its causes and treatment. Through applied behavior, however, we have seen great improvements in living skills, communications skills and self-care skills. Parents were rightfully joyful when SB 946 passed. Their adult children would be covered by health insurance and they could get the treatment that could lead to independence or semi-independence. It hasn't worked out exactly that way, yet. In August, Vista Center for Behavior Analysis held a panel discussion, featuring experts in autism and insurance, for parents of adult children with Autism … Continue reading

New European statistics released on heart disease and stroke

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) The statistics show that efforts to reduce heart disease deaths are successful, with mortality now falling in most of the continent. At the same time, the report shows the huge burden CVD presents to Europe's health, and suggests that underlying factors may cause CVD to increase in the near future. The figures show some progress. Since the 2008 report there has been a substantial drop in the number of deaths attributed to heart disease. CVD is now responsible for four million European deaths annually, down from 4.3 million in 2008 (which represents a drop from 48% to 47% of total European deaths). Within the EU, it is responsible for 1.8 million deaths per year, down from two million in 2008 (40% of all EU deaths, down from 42%)2. Commenting, ESC President, Professor Panos Vardas said: "There is good news here, but it needs to be approached with some caution. Fewer lives are being lost to cardiovascular disease than in 2008. At the same time, the scale of the problem is enormous. CVD is still responsible for four million European deaths per year. This is a real human tragedy and a significant economic burden. We anticipate this … Continue reading

Hundreds turn in unused prescriptions at Take Back event

Posted: Published on September 30th, 2012

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Department of the Attorney General, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and State Narcotics Enforcement Division held its 5th National Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative on Saturday. Residents who had any expired or unused prescription medications were encouraged to bring in their medications at various collections points on Oahu, Kauai, Maui and the Big Island. This service was free and anonymous, and no questions were asked of attendees. Tablet, capsules, and all other solid dosage forms were accepted. "We do it in an environmentally safe manner," said Robin Dinlocker of the DEA. "They are actually incinerated, because I think historically everybody remembers that people used to take their drugs and dump them down the toilet, and they were actually seeing a presence of prescription drugs in the water system, so this is a fantastic, environmentally safe way to handle them." Since September 2010, Hawaii, Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands have collected a total of nearly 6,700 pounds of expired and unused prescription medications in Take Back events. With each Take Back effort, the number of pounds collected has increased. On the most recent Take Back day, citizens turned in a record-breaking 552,161 pounds … Continue reading
