Elderly Dementia Linked to Anxiety, Insomnia Drugs

Posted: Published on September 28th, 2012

Elderly patients taking benzodiazepines or other similar anxiety or insomnia drugs are more likely to develop symptoms of dementia than those who avoid the drugs entirely. According to a WebMD.com report on a new study appearing in the journal, British Medical Journal, among a group of more than 1,000 patients in two French studies with more than 960 who were not taking benzodiazepines 32 percent who had taken the drugs for any period of time developed memory loss and other signs of dementia. This compares to just 23 percent of people who avoided benzodiazepines and other like drugs and still developed signs of dementia. Study participants were followed for 15 years and patients in it had taken or not taken benzodiazepines for varying periods of time. The prescription drugs identified in the study were Ambien, Halcion, Klonopin, Restoril, Valium, and Xanax. And even when researchers accounted for other factors that commonly lead to symptoms of dementia such as age, living arrangements, overall health, and bouts of depression, people taking benzodiazepines and other sleep inducers were more than 60 percent more likely to develop dementia-like symptoms than those who hadnt taken any of these drugs. This study stops short of linking … Continue reading

DRUGS: Let's work together to combat menace

Posted: Published on September 28th, 2012

28 September 2012 | last updated at 12:10AM Frequent reports about drug seizures and drug syndicates involving foreigners are of the utmost concern to Malaysians. For example, this month alone, several major drug hauls were reported. On Sept 4, the Criminal Investigation Department director announced the crippling of an African drug syndicate responsible for coordinating the import and export of drugs in Malaysia. On Sept 11, the Johor police uncovered a drug laboratory in Muar and seized drugs worth tens of millions of ringgit. On Sept 15, police found 13 barrels containing a mixture of sand and an undisclosed amount of syabu in Puchong, Selangor. On Sept 25, it was again reported that the police busted another two syndicates that had been using Malaysia as a transit point, with the seizure of drugs amounting to RM11 million. From the frequent drug hauls by both the police and Customs, it would appear that Malaysia is increasingly being used as a transit point and that the drug problem within the country is urgent enough to warrant more action by the relevant authorities. Given the fact that Malaysia aims, in line with the Asean vision of creating a drug-free region, to make the … Continue reading

Drug Companies Cherry-Pick Data to Get Approval for Useless Drugs | 80beats

Posted: Published on September 28th, 2012

It goes without saying that the drugs you take for a headache, or high blood pressure, or even depression should work better than a Tic-Tac. Thats what drug trials are for: researchers give a group of subjects either the drug under investigation or a placebo to check that the medicine is significantly more effective than a sugar pill. Plus, the trials can reveal any potentially harmful side effects. In theory, this is a great way to weed out useless or actively harmful drugs. But it fails when drug manufacturers cherry-pick their data, publishing papers on the positive trials and sweeping the unsuccessful ones under the rug. And this behavior is completely legal. Science writer and medical doctorBen Goldacre wrote a book, with a long excerptpublished at theGuardian, about how this process leads to approval for drugs that dont actually work. And as he explains, when widely used drugssuch as the diabetes medication rosiglitazonehave harmful side effects, they sometimes remain in common use. In 2003 the Uppsala drug monitoring group of the World Health Organisation contacted [pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline] about an unusually large number of spontaneous reports associatingrosiglitazone with heart problems. GSK conducted two internal meta-analyses of its own data on … Continue reading

FDA warns about risks of online pharmacies

Posted: Published on September 28th, 2012

By Linda A. Johnson, The Associated Press The Food and Drug Administration is warning U.S. consumers that the vast majority of Internet pharmacies are fraudulent and likely are selling counterfeit drugs that could harm them. The agency on Friday launched a national campaign, called BeSafeRx, to alert the public to the danger, amid evidence that more people are shopping for their medicine online, looking for savings and convenience. Instead, they're likely to get fake drugs that are contaminated, are past their expiration date or contain no active ingredient, the wrong amount of active ingredient or even toxic substances such as arsenic and rat poison. They could sicken or kill people, cause them to develop a resistance to their real medicine, cause new side effects or trigger harmful interactions with other medications being taken. "Our goal is to increase awareness," FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg told The Associated Press, "not to scare people away from online pharmacies. We want them to use appropriate pharmacies." That means pharmacies that are located in the U.S., are licensed by the pharmacy board in the patient's state and have a licensed pharmacist available to answer questions. In addition, the pharmacy must require a valid doctor's … Continue reading

FDA warns of fake Internet pharmacies

Posted: Published on September 28th, 2012

(CNN) Buyers beware when it comes to buying medicine online, the Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers. On Friday, the agency launched "BeSafeRx: Know Your Online Pharmacy," a national campaign to raise awareness about fake Internet pharmacies and their potential risk to consumer health. "Buying medicines from rogue online pharmacies can be risky because they may sell fake, expired, contaminated, not approved by FDA, or otherwise unsafe products that are dangerous to patients," said FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg. "Fraudulent and illegal online pharmacies often offer deeply discounted products. If the low prices seem too good to be true, they probably are. FDA's BeSafeRx campaign is designed to help patients learn how to avoid these risks." The agency did a survey and found that about 1 in 4 consumers bought prescription drugs online. Nearly 30 percent said they were not confident about buying drugs safely on the Internet. In July, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy analyzed more than 10,000 websites and found 97 percent were not in compliance with U.S. pharmacy laws and were listed as "Not Recommended." These products present a potential serious risk because they can contain too little or too much active ingredient, the … Continue reading

By Brenton Flynn | More Articles September 27, 2012 | Sarepta Therapeutics has a new drug in the works that could revolutionize treatment for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This disease, characterized by a progressive weakening of the muscles, has a dismally low survival rate -- many who are afflicted live only into their teens. Results from a 36-week trial have produced promising data showing a meaningful decline in disease progression, and investors are anxiously awaiting 48-week data to be released in coming days. As a result, the stock has gone on a huge run, with shares more than tripling since early July. This could easily be a $500 million drug in the U.S., andGlaxoSmithKline is close on Sarepta's heels developing a treatment of its own. Sarepta is the one to watch in this space, particularly as the Oct. 9 meeting of the World Muscle Society draws closer. Check out the video below to learn more. Today's issue of The Lancet focuses on epilepsy, and aims, together with content in The Lancet Neurology and The Lancet Oncology, to highlight the challenges and achievements in the global campaign against this disorder. Epilepsy is a costly and complex public health problem. According to WHO, epilepsy accounted for about 05% of the global burden of disease in 2005, or more than 7 million disability-adjusted life-years. The prevalence and burden of epilepsy is especially high in poor countriesmore than 85% of the global burden of epilepsy occurs in low-income and lower-middle-income countries (LLMIC). Effective drugs to control seizures and associated comorbidities are available, and are widely used in high-income countries. However, worldwide, up to 30% of people with epilepsy have seizures uncontrolled by available drugs; for many others, adverse effects or contraindications make drug use untenable, leaving non-drug management or surgery. Investigations into the molecular mechanisms that lead to epileptogenic changes have shown promise in preclinical models; this information could lead to more antiepileptogenic drug candidates entering clinical trials. Although many inexpensive antiepileptic drugs are available, and surgical options exist for patients who are resistant to the drugs, the epilepsy treatment gapie, the proportion of patients not seeking medical treatment … Continue reading
