Until two months ago, Deniro suffered from severe arthritis, Shadow from hip displaysia. Deniro's owner thought he may even have to put his German shepherd down. Pacemaker from Stem Cells Receives Research Funding

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) - Deborah K. Lieu, a stem cell scientist in cardiovascular medicine at UC Davis Health System, has received a $1.3 million research grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) to develop stem cells that could serve as a biological alternative to the electronic pacemakers that people now use to regulate heart rhythm. According to Lieu, each year 350,000 cardiology patients with abnormal heart rhythms receive electronic pacemakers to maintain a normal heart beat. The devices, while effective, have several disadvantages, including limited battery life and poor response to changing heart rates, such as when a person is exercising. Lieu, who is working with colleague Nipavan Chiamvimonvat, the Roger Tatarian Endowed Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at UC Davis, plans to examine ways to improve the generation of pacemaking cells using human-induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs), potentially creating what she calls a "biopacemaker." "There are more than 3 million patients around the country who are dependent on electronic pacemakers," said Lieu. "Each one costs about $58,000 to implant and requires follow-up surgery about every 5 to 10 years to change batteries. Creating a biopacemaker from stem cells would avoid the burden of battery replacement and provide the physiological … Continue reading

With this wonder drug, you just pop till you drop

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

Back at home, I googled the drug to find that these are: depression, sleeping difficulties, nausea, insomnia, a potentially dangerous increase in heart rate, feelings of hostility, suicidal thoughts and nightmares. Other than that, it sounds like a real life-enhancer. If my husband had fathered a love-child with our housekeeper (its not impossible shes an attractive woman, and the way she vacuums borders on indecent), I think Id like to know before a marriage therapist. Id see that as the bare minimum in terms of respect, really. Because to find out at the same time as some bespectacled, 100-quid-an-hour outsider well, that might be a little humiliating. Apparently, Maria Shriver doesnt share my viewpoint. In his new memoir, Arnold Schwarzenegger says that he was forced to come clean about his love-child with his housekeeper, Mildred Baena, by his wife during their couples counselling session. The minute we sat down, he writes, the therapist turned to me and said, 'Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper. Now, Im sure marriage therapy works for some, but this kind of interventionism just reminds me of playing the invisible sibling game … Continue reading

Drug's side effects outweigh relief

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

A Flinders University study has found that, after decades of use, cancer pain drug ketamine delivers more side effects for patients than relief. Source: Herald Sun AN anaesthetic drug widely used for decades to treat pain related to cancer has no overall clinical benefit, Flinders University researchers have found. The national study of 185 patients found significantly higher rates of toxicity and other side-effects among the 93 patients given pain drug ketamine as part of their treatment, compared with the 92 who were given a placebo. Chief Investigator and Professor of Palliative and Supportive Services at Flinders University, David Currow, said the results highlighted the potential harm which can be caused by prescribing drugs in ways other than they were originally intended without adequate trials - as ketamine was used. "At sub-anaesthetic doses, ketamine has been shown to help in post-operative pain relief," he said. "So the trial of it in cancer-related pain, where the nerve itself is damaged, was a very logical step." But, he said despite great hope for the drug, the role of ketamine in routine clinical care for chronic, complex cancer pain was "not in any way supported by this study". "The result is resoundingly negative," … Continue reading

Feds say Boca Raton man sold $7 million in unapproved cancer drugs

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

In August 2010, a suburban Boca Raton man sent an email to his California and Canada co-workers, warning them that undercover FDA investigators might be on to their business of selling unapproved cancer drugs to doctors throughout the United States. Martin P. Bean III didnt find it necessary, however, to halt the illegal business he ran from his home or stop wire transfers of millions of dollars in profits to bank accounts in and outside the country. Those allegations are spelled out in an indictment filed Sept. 6 in federal court in the Southern District of California. Bean, 63, faces a multitude of charges, including the sale of unapproved drugs and misbranded drugs, mail and wire fraud. He is accused of buying cancer drugs that were never approved in the United States and labeling them as FDA-approved. Bean bought the drugs the majority of which were the generic form of name brands from international sites, including India, Pakistan and Turkey. He would then sell them to doctors all over the country, including Boca Raton, Jamestown, N.Y., Illinois and San Diego. The indictment alleges Bean ran his business, called GlobalRxStore in the complaint, for at least six years. He was extradited … Continue reading

Irvine parents plead not guilty to planting drugs on PTA leader

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

The Irvine parents accused of planting drugs in the car of a PTA president and school volunteer -- who they reportedly believed had treated their son poorly -- pleaded not guilty Monday to charges related to conspiracy and false imprisonment. Kent Wycliff Easter, 38, and Jill Bjorkholm Easter, 39, are accused of plotting against school volunteer Kelli Peters. The Easters believed that Peters had locked their son, then a first-grader, outside during an after school program and had said negative things about Jill Easter, The Times previously reported, citing court documents. Just after midnight Feb. 16, 2011, Kent Easter allegedly drove to Peters' home and placed a bag of Vicodin, Percocet, marijuana and a used marijuana pipe behind the driver's seat of her unlocked car, authorities said. Prosecutors said the father left the drugs in plain sight, easily visible from outside the vehicle. The next afternoon, officials said, Easter is accused of calling an Irvine police non-emergency line, giving authorities a false name and address. Officials alleged that the father told the dispatcher he was a concerned parent and had seen erratic driving near an elementary school. He identified Peters by name and claimed to have witnessed her hiding a … Continue reading

Pharmacy mix-up nearly kills boy

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

Eyewitness News BRONX (WABC) -- Christina Torres hopes no other pharmacy has the sort of mix-up that nearly cost her 7-year-old son Adrien his life. "As a parent, the feeling that I felt at that moment and I continue to feel it, is a feeling that I would not wish on anybody," Christina Torres said. It was back in July. Little Adrien was unconscious after his mother gave him what she thought was his third dose of generic Ritalin, which she got at Felicity Pharmacy in the Bronx. At the hospital, doctors took a closer look at Adrien's medication. The bottle read methylphenidate. The name and one aspect of the pill are very similar to methadone. They each have an "m" in a box on the pill, but one is for children. The other is synthetic heroin. "The doctor comes back in the room and tells me, 'ma'am, we're sorry to tell you, but your son is overdosing on methadone," Torres said. Late today, the pharmacist at Felicity admitted it was an incredibly horrible mistake. "I agree and I admit, it's a human error," the pharmacist said. Sadly, because of the similarities between these pills, it's not the first time … Continue reading
