Synthetic Street Drug Camouflaged as Bath Salts Has Dangerous, Bizarre Effects

Posted: Published on September 21st, 2012

JUDY WOODRUFF: And we turn to a story we posted online earlier today. We have done extensive reporting on a set of drugs commonly known as bath salts. These street drugs have been on the rise in recent years and pose serious problems for law enforcement. They are packaged to look like common household products with names like Lady Bubbles or White Dove. But the chemicals in them and the high they produce can be devastating for lives and communities. Their effects can be stronger and longer-lasting than other drugs like amphetamines and cocaine. Researchers are trying to understand how they work and how the chemistry behind them continues to change. Louis De Felice is one of those researchers studying this new class of substances at Virginia Commonwealth University. And he joins me now from Richmond. Thank you for being with us. And let me just start by saying, when people hear the term bath salts, maybe they think of Epsom salts, which you would buy at a pharmacy, in a drugstore, but this is very different. Tell us what they are. LOUIS DE FELICE, Virginia Commonwealth University: Well, you're right. It's very different than the name implies. It's a … Continue reading

Multiple sclerosis drugs seen gaining traction

Posted: Published on September 21st, 2012

By Russ Britt, MarketWatch LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) After a number of false starts, drugs used as therapies for the once-untreatable, debilitating disease multiple sclerosis are gaining traction in pharmaceutical labs, and are beginning to catch the eye of Wall Street. The latest development came Wednesday, when the New England Journal of Medicine published two studies online that said a new drug, known as BG-12, that Biogen Idec Inc. /quotes/zigman/91573/quotes/nls/biib BIIB +0.66% is developing was deemed effective in preventing relapses of MS in a Phase III study. In those trials, the publication said, BG-12 significantly reduced the number of patients who had a relapse, the relapse rate and the rate at which patients became disabled as well as the number of lesions found in MRIs on the brain and spinal cord. The findings did little to boost Biogen Idec shares Thursday, though the stock was up marginally in early trading Thursday. Analysts, however, are saying that the drug could help the companys product pipeline down the road. Shares of Biogen Idec have nearly doubled since hitting a 52-week low of $88.64 on Oct. 3. RBC Capital Markets analyst Michael Yee said in a note to clients that he favors Gilead Sciences … Continue reading

Drugmakers seeking ways to improve testing of experimental drugs

Posted: Published on September 21st, 2012

TRENTON, N.J. Pharmaceutical-industry heavyweights are teaming up to address a challenge that has long vexed drugmakers: how to improve the way experimental drugs are tested so they can be approved, and reach patients, faster. Ten top U.S. and European drugmakers on Wednesday said they have started a nonprofit organization, TransCelerate BioPharma, to collaborate on the problem. Research productivity across the industry has been declining while costs have been rising over the past few decades. About 5,000 to 10,000 potential drugs fail for every one approved, although all but about five of those compounds are scrapped by the time costly tests in people begin. Including all the failed drugs, the cost of getting one approved has risen from about $140 million in the 1970s to more than $1.2 billion, according to the industry group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. That's partly because the process from finding a compound to getting it approved by regulators takes 10 to 15 years. TransCelerate will aim to shorten that time and reduce costs along the way, initially by developing strategies to make it easier and quicker to set up and run clinical tests of experimental drugs. That will include developing standard methodology for collecting … Continue reading

Treatment failing for Arroyo

Posted: Published on September 21st, 2012

Share TREATMENT NOT WORKING. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is experiencing more intense pain and "numbness" in her neck. File photo MANILA, Philippines - Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is not recovering from her spinal condition despite having undergone stem cell treatment and tried other remedies. Arroyo is suffering numbness and shooting pain near her neck, she said on her official Twitter account @gmarroyo on Thursday, September 20. The Pampanga Rep. added that her doctors have advised her to wear her neck brace for longer periods of time in order to cope with the pain, and a recent CT scan showed that her neck muscles have "atrophied" due to her spinal condition. According to Arroyo, the pain was so intense that she was unable to attend a scheduled pictorial for the members of the House of Representatives and sent a file photo. After the former President was granted bail by a Pasay City Court last July, she contacted alternative medicine doctor Antonia Park, who owns a wellness center in Tagaytay City, and this week Arroyo started searching for another specialist who can correct her spinal condition. Arroyo still has physical therapy sessions 3 times a week at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center, where the … Continue reading

StemGenex to Launch Adult Stem Cell-Based Therapy to Relieve COPD Symptoms

Posted: Published on September 21st, 2012

LA JOLLA, Calif., Sept. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- New developments in regenerative medicine are bringing about exciting, novel approaches to create therapies for hard to treat diseases. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a hard to treat disorder that progressively blocks airflow in the lungs making it increasingly difficult for an individual to breathe, and is one of the leading illnesses in the US. Yet, current treatments for COPD can only try to limit the extent of damage to the lungs, and to bring some relief from symptoms. Novel treatments for COPD are urgently needed, and new applications with the use of adult stem cells may have much benefit. This is because adult stem cells have an ability to differentiate into many different types of cells, such as those required for healthy, functioning lung tissue. Also, adult stem cells can be isolated with ease from an individual's own fat tissue, and so adult stem cell therapy is not subject to the ethical or religious issues that trouble some other methods. (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120920/LA78252) StemGenex, a US based company, is finding new avenues and methods for using adipose derived adult stem cells to help in diseases with limited treatment options. Embattled Bonita Springs doctor back in stem cell business

Posted: Published on September 21st, 2012

Dr. Zannos Grekos is back in the stem cell business in his Bonita Springs office even though state health-care regulators suspended his license in February. Grekos, a cardiologist, is chief medical officer of a new company, Intercellular Sciences, which "follows in the footsteps" of his earlier practice called Regenocyte Therapeutics, according to Intercellular's website. Intercellular operates at 9500 Bonita Beach Road where Regenocyte is located. The new company website says all stem cell treatment is done in the Dominican Republic, which follows how Grekos was doing the therapy before he faced state sanctions for performing it in his Bonita Springs practice. Staff at Intercellular Sciences could not be reached for comment. The state health department is aware of Grekos involvement with Intercellular but cannot say whether serving as chief medical officer means he is actively practicing medicine against the suspension, health department spokeswoman Ashley Carr said. Incorporation papers were submitted and filed May 15 for Intercellular with the state Division of Corporations, but Grekos is not listed as an agent or manager, the documents show. The registered agent, Mike Calcaterra, of North Fort Myers, serves as president and chief operating officer of Intercellular. He could not be reached for comment. … Continue reading

Nanomaterials in a heart beat

Posted: Published on September 20th, 2012

Stem cell scientists have capitalised on the electrical properties of a widely used nanomaterial to develop cells which may allow the regeneration of cardiac cells. The breakthrough has been led by a team of scientists at the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) at the National University of Ireland Galway in conjunction with Trinity College Dublin. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Ireland. Once damaged by heart attack, cardiac muscle has very little capacity for self-repair and at present there are no clinical treatments available to repair damaged cardiac muscle tissue. Over the last 10 years, there has been tremendous interest in developing a cell-based therapy to address this problem. Since the use of a patient's own heart cells is not a viable clinical option, many researchers are working to try to find an alternative source of cells that could be used for cardiac tissue repair. REMEDI researchers Dr Valerie Barron and Dr Mary Murphy have brought together a multi-disciplinary team of Irish materials scientists, physicists and biologists from REMEDI at National University of Ireland Galway and Trinity College Dublin to address this problem. The researchers recognised that carbon nanotubes, a widely used nanoparticle, is reactive to electrical stimulation. … Continue reading

PHOENIX (CBS5) - The nation's largest drug wholesaler is the target of an Arizona lawsuit alleging the company artificially inflating the prices of more than 400 brand-name prescription drugs, costing consumers millions of dollars. The complaint wasfiledon Fridayin Maricopa County Superior Court againstMcKesson Corporation, alleging it violated Arizona's Consumer Fraud Act. [Click here to read the entire complaint (PDF)] Among the drugs that are alleged to have been marked-up inappropriately are: The complaint alleges that several of McKesson's executives constructed a scheme beginning in 2000 to mark up the average wholesale price of many prescription drugs, resulting in higher prescription costs for Arizona businesses and consumers. Thesuit specifically alleges that McKesson raised the spread between the published average wholesale price and the actual acquisition costs in an effort to increase profits for its pharmacy customers, Horne said. Those prices were passed along, the complaint alleges, to third-party payors and consumers. McKesson distributes pharmaceuticals to retailers including Albertson's, Costco, Safeway, Target, Walmart and Walgreens. McKesson controls approximately one-third of the national wholesale drug distribution market. The complaint seeks civil penalties of up to $10,000 against McKesson for each violation of the Consumer Fraud Act, as well as restitution. Copyright 2012 CBS 5 … Continue reading
