Man on a mission

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2012

Stem-cell scientist Alan Trounson in San Francisco. Photo: Hugh Hamilton INSTEAD of his former daily commute from Ashburton to Clayton, Australia's leading stem-cell scientist, Alan Trounson, walks to his office on San Francisco's waterfront, where he is head of the $3 billion California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the world's best-funded centre for embryonic research. It is a bustling stretch of this beautiful bayside city, where trolley cars squeak as noisily as a Melbourne tram as they travel beneath the Bay Bridge and in summer baseball fans invade in their thousands, heading to the San Francisco Giants' home ballpark just across the road from Trounson's home. But the former Monash University professor doesn't hear much of the din; he's too focused on his work. An ocean and decades away from his days in Melbourne as a pioneer of in vitro fertilisation, the 66-year-old scientist has learnt many things from working in a laboratory - chief among them is to simply stay focused. Last month the world's five-millionth IVF baby was born; something that may not have occurred had Trounson and early IVF scientists been sidelined by their detractors. Among them was the religious right, which claimed they were attempting to … Continue reading

Stem cell therapy cures local woman's breast cancer

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2012

Editor's note: The following is the latest in a "Mammograms Save Lives" series from Project Self-Sufficiency. Susan Sacco did not have a happy 44th birthday. Instead of celebrating with her family, Sacco was on the phone with her physician, receiving the news that she had an aggressive form of breast cancer. The cancer was growing so rapidly that it had not shown up on the mammogram she had received only three months earlier. Sacco had found a pea-shaped lump in her breast during a self-exam, so she returned to her doctor after finding the lump and requested an additional mammogram. Once again, the exam showed nothing unusual, despite the fact that Sacco could feel the lump with her fingers. Sacco said, "I was among those women whose cancer is not found on a mammogram." Cancerous cells appear lighter than the surrounding tissue on a mammogram, which makes the test an effective diagnostic tool. However, a certain percentage of women have "dense" breast tissue, which also appears lighter on a mammogram. According to the National Cancer Institute, screening mammograms can miss up to 20 percent of breast cancers that are present at the time of the exam, and many of these … Continue reading

Undetectable stem cell treatment could be the wave of the performance-enhancement future

Posted: Published on August 25th, 2012

It was a good week for the drug police. Lance Armstrong dropped his fight against the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, and Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon was banned 50 games by Major League Baseball for a positive testosterone test. Bartolo Coln credits stem cell treatment for his return to Major League Baseball. (Getty)The enforcers should enjoy this moment while it lasts, because sports science is on the precipice of a potentially new era of performance enhancement: stem cell therapy, which could soon make testosterone injections as ancient as the typewriter and press enforcement agencies like USADA to play catch up once again. "Sports medicine will definitely see a revolution in the next 10 to 50 years," says Allston Stubbs, associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Wake Forest Baptist Health. "We'll go from traditional scalpel surgery to biologic surgery. Now we operate with a knife, but we'll move to cells or growth factors." This is both thrilling and daunting in the performance-enhancement realm, because stem cell therapy is potentially both an avenue to better performance and a doorway to undetectable enhancement. Colon is an example of how both, if the science advances as some in the field of stem cell research believe … Continue reading

Drugs contributed to Rodney King's death, coroner concludes

Posted: Published on August 24th, 2012

Rodney King's struggles with addiction thrust him into public consciousness more than two decades ago, as a drunk driver bludgeoned by Los Angeles police. In June the same affliction led to his death, medical examiners have concluded. King, an avid swimmer, drowned in the pool of his Rialto home in the early morning of June 17 after slipping into a "state of drug and alcohol-induced delirium," according to a San Bernardino County coroner's report released Thursday. His death was deemed accidental. Coroner's officials said drugs and alcohol, combined with his enlarged heart, likely triggered an irregular heartbeat that incapacitated him after he fell or jumped into his backyard pool. Along with alcohol, toxicology tests found traces of marijuana, PCP and cocaine. Before his death at 47, King described himself as a recovering addict, but he had not stopped drinking and had secured a doctor's clearance to use medical marijuana. Last year he appeared on VH1's "Celebrity Rehab," trying to tackle his fight with alcoholism. "People who combat chemical abuse, they go backward from time to time," Ontresicia Averette, one of King's closest cousins, said Thursday. Averette said one of the saddest aspects of King's death was that he was unable … Continue reading

Drugs gang jailing 'dents trade'

Posted: Published on August 24th, 2012

24 August 2012 Last updated at 06:10 ET The conviction of a drugs gang has put "a considerable dent" in the trade in Gloucestershire, police said. Racing driver Laurence Kilby, 40, of Cheltenham, was jailed with 11 other drug smugglers. Bristol Crown Court heard he ran a gang moving drugs from Eastern Europe to London, west England and south Wales. "In terms of Mr Kilby's operation as a drugs supplier in the South West, I think we can safely say that that no longer exists," said Det Insp Bean. Kilby was heavily in debt and turned to crime to maintain his lifestyle of fast cars and high living, the court was told. He was jailed in June but his conviction, and those of the rest of the gang, can now be reported following the conclusion of another trial. Kilby and Vladan Vujovic, 43, of Grange Road, London were found guilty of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. Both were jailed for 18 years. Det Insp Bean, from Gloucestershire Police, who led the investigation, said it had put a "considerable dent" in the county's drugs trade. "Obviously the six-and-a-half kilos that we seized, that is now destroyed, so any activity we … Continue reading
