Patient-derived stem cells could improve drug research for Parkinson's

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2012

Public release date: 4-Jul-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Daniel Stimson, NINDS nindspressteam@ninds.nih.gov 301-496-5751 NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Researchers have taken a step toward personalized medicine for Parkinson's disease, by investigating signs of the disease in patient-derived cells and testing how the cells respond to drug treatments. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health. The researchers collected skin cells from patients with genetically inherited forms of Parkinson's and reprogrammed those cells into neurons. They found that neurons derived from individuals with distinct types of Parkinson's showed common signs of distress and vulnerability in particular, abnormalities in the cellular energy factories known as mitochondria. At the same time, the cells' responses to different treatments depended on the type of Parkinson's each patient had. The results were published in Science Translational Medicine. "These findings suggest new opportunities for clinical trials of Parkinson's disease, in which cell reprogramming technology could be used to identify the patients most likely to respond to a particular intervention," said Margaret Sutherland, Ph.D., a program director at NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). A consortium of researchers conducted the study with primary funding from NINDS. The consortium … Continue reading

Defending the Prophet

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2012

The vicious campaigns being waged against the Muslim nation have now transcended all boundaries. Not content with their false accusations against Muslims, the organizers of these campaigns have crossed the red line by targeting Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, who is being subjected to blasphemous attacks. It is not unusual to see these attacks coming from Orientalists and Western missionaries as they have done throughout history. What is not usual is the seeming inability of the Muslim nation to come to the defense of its Prophet. Arab money invested in the West amounts to hundreds of billions of dollars. This money could have been used to seek legal advice, using the very legislation in those countries where the attacks originate. It could have been used to solicit the services of law offices all over the world as well as using the media, especially satellite television. If this money is not used to defend Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, when and where and how is it going to be used? Taking firm action against anyone found to blaspheme the Prophet, pbuh, while threatening them with legal action would make those individuals think twice before attempting to commit such an act. The case … Continue reading

Reinstated drug cheats cast shadows

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2012

But his defeat at the Jamaican selection trials this week has raised the spectre of all three mens sprint titles falling to reinstated drug cheats at the London Olympic Games. Yohan Blake's upset victories over defending Olympic champion Bolt in the 100m and 200m Jamaican trials this week has focussed the spotlight on him, and his chequered past. I wanted to quit: Caster Semenya speaks Blake, 22, clocked a personal best (and quickest time of the year), running 9.75sec (tailwind 1.1m/s) in beating Bolt (9.86) and Asafa Powell (9.88) and Michael Fraster (9.94) in the 100m race. It suggests Jamaica could set a world record in the 4x100m relay at the Games. A couple of days later Blake confirmed his superiority by winning the 200m trial, again clocking the best time of the year of 19.80 (headwind 0.5m/s) from Bolt who ran second in 19.83. Sign for our Olympics email alert for your chance to win a car In Brussels last year, Blake won the 200m in 19.26sec, second in history only to Bolt. All good news for a sport often ignored unless records are tumbling. But Blake's success brings with it a certain doubt ever since he failed a … Continue reading

Russian police accused of framing drugs suspects

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2012

3 July 2012 Last updated at 21:51 ET By Oleg Boldyrev BBC Russian Russian anti-narcotic officials say that more than 40,000 convictions for drug-related crimes in 2011 show their success in the war on drugs. But human rights activists accuse the police of mass fabrications. Elena Kuznetsova witnessed the last minutes of her son Roman's liberty. He went from their flat downstairs to meet someone who owed him money for a recently sold scooter. From a window of their flat, Mrs Kuznetsova saw her son suddenly being manhandled into an unmarked car parked nearby. She managed to run downstairs and followed the car. It took her son to a branch of the Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN) in Khimki, a suburb just outside Moscow. There, Roman Kuznetsov's bag was taken away from him. An hour later, during the official search, inside the bag were found 18 small packets of hashish hidden in a cigarette pack. I'd say up to 80% of cases relating to the possession of lighter drugs like cannabis are not real An investigation followed. It did not find her son's fingerprints on the drugs. Experts failed to establish whether separate packets of hash were part of the … Continue reading

North Texas man among first to try stem cells for heart failure

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2012

by JANET ST. JAMES WFAA Posted on July 3, 2012 at 5:15 PM Updated yesterday at 5:24 PM DALLAS Six weeks ago, 64-year-old Larry Rayes could only walk a few steps without resting. "I could only walk about 20 yards and I got very lightheaded, very dizzy," Rayes said. Rayes suffers from congestive heart failure, a condition caused by a heart so weak it can't effectively pump blood through his body. He needs a heart transplant, but until he gets one, Rayes is part of an experiment to see if his heart can heal itself. In May, at the same time doctors implanted a heart pump in Rayes' chest, his weakened heart also received a series of 20 stem cell injections. "We're using these stem cells to regenerate the muscle of the heart, so that their hearts can beat more effectively," explained cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Todd Dewey. Antelope Valley Hospital Receives Stroke Achievement Award

Posted: Published on July 4th, 2012

Antelope Valley Hospital has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Associations Get with the Guidelines stroke bronze quality achievement award. The award recognizes the hospitals commitment to implementing high standards of stroke care by ensuring that stroke patients receive nationally accepted treatment and recommendations. With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the Get with the Guidelines award addresses the important element of time, Antelope Valley Hospital CEO Edward Mirzabegian said in a prepared statement. He said the hospital developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologists available to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate. To receive the award, the hospital had to consistently follow the treatment guidelines for 90 days. The evaluation period is the first in an ongoing self-evaluation by the hospital to continually reach the 85 percent compliance level needed to sustain this award. Marizabegian said the time is right for Antelope Valley to focus on stroke. The number of acute ischemic stroke patients eligible for treatment is expected to grow over the next decade due to the aging population. According to … Continue reading
