MPs move to step aside from politics in drugs debate

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012

The focus needs to be on social and health programs, not criminal charges for users ... Liberal MP Mal Washer. In April, a report from the Australia21 think tank argued the ''war on drugs'' and tough stance on illegal substances had failed, sparking debate and increasing support for decriminalising personal use from a swathe of eminent figures, including former police commissioners, state premiers and health ministers. The Liberal MP Mal Washer, the Greens senator Richard Di Natale, both doctors, and the independent MP Rob Oakeshott will this morning call on the government to ask the Productivity Commission to investigate the adequacy of illegal drug laws. DECRIMINALISING drugs will be investigated by Australia's top independent policy adviser under a plan championed by a trio of federal MPs from different sides of Parliament, with the aim to take politics out of the debate. In April a report from the Australia21 think tank argued the ''war on drugs'' and tough stance on illegal substances had failed, sparking debate and gaining support for decriminalising personal use from eminent Australians, including former police commissioners and premiers. Liberal MP Mal Washer, Greens senator Richard Di Natale (who are both doctors) and independent Rob Oakeshott will this morning call on the government to ask the Productivity Commission to investigate the current adequacy of illegal drug laws. ''I've lost count of how many MPs have told me privately we have to change the approach to drugs but won't speak out.'' It is unclear which MP would move a motion but Dr Washer said he would ideally like a government MP to do so to ensure the best … Continue reading

Hearing delayed in Bauder Pharmacy missing-drugs case

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012

A state hearing has been delayed on allegations of a massive shortage of narcotics at a landmark Des Moines pharmacy. The Iowa Board of Pharmacy had been scheduled to hear evidence today in the case of Bauder Pharmacy. The hearing has been rescheduled for Aug. 28 to give both sides more time to prepare, said George LaMarca, attorney for the pharmacy and owner Mark Graziano. The pharmacy board last month filed administrative charges against Graziano and the pharmacy, located at 3802 Ingersoll Ave., in connection with more than 700,000 pain pills that the board said had gone missing. LaMarca said Graziano and other staff members are cooperating with the investigation, and some of the issues have been resolved. While the matter is pending, the store remains open but is not allowed to dispense certain types of addictive drugs, including narcotic painkillers. LaMarca said his client has not decided whether to ask that the state hearing be closed to the public. No criminal charges have been filed in the matter. LaMarca said other parties had inquired about possibly purchasing the century-old store even before the controversy erupted last month. He said such inquiries have continued in recent weeks, but the Graziano … Continue reading

FDA report faults Houston-area stem-cell company

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012

The Sugar Land company involved in Gov. Rick Perry's unlicensed adult stem-cell procedure is rife with basic manufacturing problems, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In a report one expert called a blow to the entire adult stem-cell industry, the FDA found that Celltex Therapeutics Corp. cannot guarantee the sterility, uniformity and integrity of stem cells it takes from people and then stores and grows for eventual therapeutic reinjection. "You have not performed a validation of your banking and thawing process to assure viability" of the stem cells, reads the April 27 report, meaning that the company cannot verify the cells are alive. The FDA report, which followed an April 16-27 inspection of Celltex, was released under the Freedom of Information Act Monday to the Houston Chronicle and a University of Minnesota bioethicist who complained in February that Celltex is a potential danger to patients and not in compliance with federal law. The report, partially redacted, was not accompanied by a warning letter. A former FDA official who read it, however, said the deficiencies - 79 in all, from incorrectly labeled products to failed sterility tests - are so serious that Celltex risks being shut down if it … Continue reading

FDA: Stem cell lab used by Perry has problems

Posted: Published on June 26th, 2012

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a new report criticizing the Texas company that stored adult stem cells from Texas Gov. Rick Perry for use in an experimental procedure for his back pain, according to a newspaper report Monday. An FDA report obtained by the Houston Chronicle ( http://bit.ly/MwEHjI) said CellTex Therapeutics cannot guarantee the stem cells it takes from patients remain sterile and alive. The nine-page report dated April 27 says the lab, located in the Houston suburb of Sugar Land, does not have procedures to prevent contamination of products that are supposed to be sterile. The report also says the lab didn't have written records of investigations into the failure of a batch of cells. It also says the lab has not marked some lab products properly. "The deficiencies identified reflect significant problems, serious issues," said Paul Knoepfler, an associate professor at the University of California-Davis School of Medicine, in an interview with the newspaper. "If I were a patient, they would scare me off big time." CellTex was thrust into the news last year when Perry, then running for the Republican nomination for president, revealed that he had stem cells taken from fat in his … Continue reading
